Chapter 137 Guan Yanchulin (Part 1)
No matter how badly you live your life, you'll always have one or two friends.
Chu Lin was no exception.
He knew two brothers when he was a street urchin with bright red hair, making a living by driving the streets.
The two children lost their parents at a young age, and their relatives were unwilling to take them in. They grew up by scavenging garbage until they were sixteen. One of them naturally differentiated into an A-level Alpha, and the other differentiated into an Omega. Life finally became a little easier. Two years later, they joined the same organization as Chu Lin.
During those days of risking their lives, everyone was living for the moment. Among them, Chen Ke, the younger brother, was saved by Chu Lin, and his older brother Chen Lan followed Chu Lin's lead.
He's quite a capable assistant.
Later, Aila Biotechnology was defeated by Fang Xiao, and everyone went their separate ways. When Chu Lin, who was a "traitor," was being hunted down, Chen Lan risked her life to prepare his luggage and put 10,000 yuan into it herself.
After being rescued by Guan Yan, the two lost contact. They only reconnected recently when they met Chen Ke at the entrance of a hotel.
Chu Lin passed the adult college entrance examination on his first try, breathed a heavy sigh of relief, and finally had some free time.
He was quite happy to see the Chen brothers again.
I specially set aside an afternoon to get together with the two of them. Chu Lin treated us to a meal at a quiet and upscale restaurant with flowing water and realistic artificial mountains outside the window.
As soon as Chen Ke entered, he couldn't help but look around. After sitting down, he said excitedly, "Brother Chu, this place is really nice."
Chen Ke used to have a slight stutter, but he has improved a lot over the years. Before, listening to him speak was so frustrating that Chen Lan had to translate for him in advance.
Chen Lan had cut her hair very short, was lean and wiry, with bronze skin and a scar at the corner of her eye. She was taciturn, but when she saw Chu Lin, she finally showed a genuine smile. Chen Ke... was still young and naive, protected by his brother, and never afraid of anything.
"What have you been up to lately?" Chu Lin asked.
Chen Lan replied, "To be a henchman for a boss."
Chu Lin frowned.
Chen Lan added: "A proper boss only calls me when there's trouble."
Chen Lan has a knack for business. Chu Lin remembers that this person used to make money from small investments.
When the food was served, Chen Ke ate, while Chu Lin and Chen Lan chatted about many past events.
Chu Lin hadn't realized it before, but now he felt a pang of regret.
Chen Lan glanced at Chu Lin's black hair: "Brother Chu has changed a lot."
"Now that we have a goal, we can't just drift through life." Chu Lin ate some peanuts, and seeing that Chen Ke liked the plate of sweet and sour pork, he pushed it towards him. "Where are you two living now?"
Chen Lan gave an address for a rental apartment.
Chu Lin thought for a moment and said, "Why don't you work for me instead?"
Chen Lan didn't need to ask in detail to know that Chu Lin had a career. This person used to be just playful and directionless, so he went to work for those people to seek excitement. Later, he suddenly wanted to get away, but how could he leave? Chen Lan once thought that Chu Lin was gone. Although he was a high-level Alpha, he had no power or influence and could not compete with those big bosses.
"Let's not go," Chen Lan said. "Brother Chu, I can't do anything other than physical labor, but you're obviously a cultured person."
"Even the most cultured person is still your brother Chu," Chu Lin said. "Physical work is physical work."
Chen Lan understood that Chu Lin wanted to repay the help he had received back then, but he was not good at socializing and had little education, so he was worried that he would cause trouble for Chu Lin.
Chen Ke hadn't thought of all that. He ate with greasy mouth and said with a grin, "It would be best to follow Brother Chu. My brother's boss is jealous of him and is always causing him trouble."
Chu Lin: "I've resigned."
Chen Lan hesitated.
He was still wearing an old coat from a few years ago, the leather on the cuffs was cracked. In civilized society, A-grade pheromones only mean that jobs are easy to find, but not high-paying ones. Chen Ke had some lung problems, and the medication he took each month cost a lot of money.
Chu Lin: "Listen to me."
Chen Lan breathed a sigh of relief, raised her glass to Chu Lin, and said, "Thank you, Brother Chu."
After finishing their meal, Chen Lan insisted on paying the bill, but Chu Lin pushed her away. As they left, it started to drizzle outside. Chu Lin followed the two brothers back to their rented apartment.
Near the suburbs, there is a large area of self-built houses. Although the road is paved with cement, it gets congested when an oncoming car comes along. There is a smell coming from the ditch next to it, and when you look up, you see all kinds of power lines crisscrossing.
Chu Lin was only wearing a short-sleeved shirt when he came out today. Chen Lan felt cold, so she gave him one of her clean leather jackets. It was burgundy and the style was a bit old-fashioned and unconventional. When Chu Lin put it on, the feeling from back then came back.
Chen Lan laughed and said, "Brother Chu is still handsome."
"Of course!" Chu Lin asked Chen Lan for a cigarette, then saw a second-hand black motorcycle parked downstairs. He got the keys and took a leisurely ride around the deserted streets.
Chen Ke felt sleepy and went upstairs to rest, while Chu Lin and Chen Lan talked while leaning against the motorcycle.
"I always feel like Brother Chu is carrying something on his shoulders," Chen Lan said with a smile.
“It was voluntary.” Chu Lin seemed to have thought of something, and a gentle emotion suddenly appeared in his eyes. “If you knew what I had gained, you would understand that this is all God’s favor.”
Chen Lan understood: "Brother Chu is in a relationship?"
"Um."
"What kind of person?"
“Savior, guide, mentor, teacher, lover,” Chu Lin said. “I can’t find anyone better than him.”
Chen Lan was a little surprised.
"Brother Chu has quit smoking too?"
"Pretty much. I'll offer him a couple when I see a business partner, since he doesn't like the smell of cigarettes."
Chen Lan smiled, finding these words quite unusual for Chu Lin, who had once been fearless.
"Hey, is that steamed bun shop we ate at before still open?" Chu Lin suddenly thought of this.
"I forgot, we haven't been back for a long time either, but I guess it's closed down. I heard that area has been mostly demolished."
Chen Ke slept for about forty minutes, then came downstairs with three popsicles.
"Eating this in the rain?" Chen Lan disagreed, taking one and handing it to Chu Lin.
"Oh, it's all artificial flavorings and colors." Chu Lin reminisced. These popsicles were cheap, but they were their favorite thing in the sweltering summer. They were so refreshing to swallow. Because they were all made with advanced technology, they were nicknamed "artificial flavorings and colors."
"Brother, there's something I need to tell you."
"explain."
“There’s a car over there, it seems to be watching us. It was there before I went to sleep.”
Upon hearing this, Chu Lin and Chen Lan's expressions changed simultaneously.
Years of honed awareness had put them on high alert. Chu Lin tossed his cigarette into a nearby puddle and strode toward the direction Chen Ke had indicated.
The next second, that car also drove out.
It looks somewhat familiar...
The rear window was down, revealing a fair and beautiful profile.
Chen Lan noticed that Chu Lin was walking even faster.
He walked over and naturally leaned over the rear window to talk. A short while later, a person got out of the car. It's no exaggeration to say that as soon as the person's upper body peeked out, the whole area seemed to brighten up a bit.
Chu Lin seemed to be trying to stop him, but he couldn't. He stared at the other person's shoes in the mud with a pained expression.
