Chapter 52 The truth is right before our eyes
When there was a knock on the security door, Yu Hao was adding Sun Yong's name to the case file with a red pen. He looked up, and the sunlight outside the window slanted down on the spread-out photo. Guo Zhong, curled up in the snow, looked like a flattened dumpling. "Who?" Yu Hao's voice was a little hoarse. The white wine he drank last night made his throat slightly sore. "It's me." The female voice outside the door was cold and familiar. Yu Hao's heart moved, and he quickly got up and opened the door. Sun Wei was standing in the corridor, wearing an off-white cashmere coat and a pink knitted scarf. This was completely different from her usual look in a white coat. She was less sharp than a forensic doctor and more gentle. She was clutching two bulging thermos bags, a faint smile on her face. "Happy New Year." Yu Hao froze for a moment, then stepped aside to ask her to come in quickly. "Why are you here?" "I figured you were lost in thought again, so I came to check on you." Sun Wei walked into the room, her eyes sweeping over the pile of case files on the coffee table. The corners of her mouth curved even more. Only then did Yu Hao notice how messy his living room was. A cigarette box was tossed between the sofas, an empty wine bottle spilled on the floor, and the most conspicuous thing was the plate of leftover bread in the middle of the coffee table, dry as a rock. He scratched his head awkwardly and reached out to clean up. "Don't mind. I rarely have people over, so I don't usually clean up." Sun Wei held his hand, her fingertips slightly cold. "I'll do it." She gathered the case files neatly, tossed the empty wine bottle into the trash, and pulled a glass jar from the thermos. "Here, my mom's braised beef with soy sauce. Serve with bread." Yu Hao's stomach growled—he'd only nibbled on two bites of bread that morning, and was already hungry, but too lazy to move. "And here." Sun Wei pulled out another thermos, opening it, and steam billowed out. "Fresh dumplings from the pot. Cabbage and pork filling. I made them. Come try my cooking." "You can make dumplings too?" Yu Hao's voice was a little hoarse. "Don't underestimate me." Sun Wei poured dumplings into a bowl. "I remember one time after college training, you ate three plates of cabbage and pork dumplings by yourself. It startled the girls." Then she laughed. Yu Hao smiled, too. That year, Sun Wei was a freshman with pigtails, shuttling between class and the lab all day, clutching her anatomy textbook. They sat down at the dining table. Sun Wei poured Yu Hao a glass of vinegar: "Use a little, you have a weak stomach." She poured herself some soy sauce, picked up a dumpling, and took a gentle bite. The juices dripped down the corner of her mouth, and she hurriedly...
When the security door was knocked, Yu Hao was adding Sun Yong's name to the case file with a red pen.
He raised his head, and the sunlight outside the window shone obliquely on the spread-out photo. Guo Zhong curled up in the snow looked like a flattened dumpling.
"Who?" Yu Hao's voice was a little hoarse, and the white wine he drank last night made his throat slightly sore.
"It's me."
The female voice coming from outside the door was cold and familiar. Yu Hao's heart moved and he quickly got up and opened the door.
Sun Wei stood in the corridor, wearing an off-white cashmere coat and a pink knitted scarf. This was completely different from her usual white coat look, less sharp than a forensic doctor and more gentle.
She was holding two bulging cooler bags in her hands, with a faint smile on her face: "Happy New Year."
Yu Hao was stunned for a moment, then turned aside to let her in quickly, "Why are you here?"
"I guess you must be staring at the case again, so I came to check on you." Sun Wei walked into the room, her eyes sweeping over the pile of case files on the coffee table, and the corners of her mouth curved even more.
Only then did Yu Hao notice how messy his living room was. A cigarette box was tossed between the sofas, an empty wine bottle spilled on the floor, and the most striking thing was the plate of leftover bread in the middle of the coffee table, dry as a rock.
He scratched his head awkwardly and reached out to clean up: "Don't mind, there are rarely people coming to my house, so I don't usually clean up."
Sun Wei held his hand, her fingertips slightly cool. "I'll do it." She gathered the case files neatly, tossed the empty wine bottle into the trash, and pulled a glass jar from the thermos bag. "Here, this is my mom's braised beef with bread."
Yu Hao's stomach growled uncontrollably - he had only eaten two bites of bread that morning and was already hungry, but he was just too lazy to move.
"And this." Sun Wei took out another thermos bucket, and when she opened it, steam rose from it. "Fresh dumplings from the pot, with cabbage and pork filling. I made them. Come and try my cooking."
"You can also make dumplings?" Yu Hao's voice was a little hoarse.
"Don't underestimate me." Sun Wei put dumplings into the bowl, "I remember one time after the university training, you ate three plates of cabbage and pork dumplings by yourself, which scared us girls." After saying that, she laughed.
Yu Hao also laughed. That year, Sun Wei was still a freshman with a ponytail, running between the classroom and the laboratory all day long, carrying anatomy textbooks.
The two sat down at the dining table. Sun Wei poured Yu Hao a glass of vinegar: "Dip a little, you have a bad stomach." She poured herself some soy sauce, picked up a dumpling and took a light bite. The soup flowed down the corners of her mouth. She hurriedly wiped it with a tissue, and her ears were slightly red.
Yu Hao watched in ecstasy. Normally in the autopsy lab, Sun Wei was as calm as ice, her hands never shaking as she gloved herself open a corpse. But now, she looked like a little girl caught stealing candy.
"What are you looking at?" Sun Wei raised her eyes and glared at him, but her tone was weak.
"Nothing." Yu Hao lowered his head and took a bite of the dumpling. The sweetness of the cabbage mixed with the mellow aroma of the pork spread in his mouth, burning his tongue and making it numb, but his heart was warm. "Where are your parents? Why didn't you spend the New Year with them?"
"My mom went to my grandma's house, and my dad said he was with overseas clients." Sun Wei took a sip of soup. "Besides, they knew I was bringing you food, and they urged me to bring more."
Yu Hao's heart skipped a beat. He knew Sun Wei's family background—her father was a real estate entrepreneur, her mother was a university professor, and she was the only child, raised in the care of her parents.
For this lunch, she personally went into the kitchen to make dumplings. Thinking of this, Yu Hao felt touched.
"Thank you," he whispered.
"What are you thanking me for?" Sun Wei waved her hand. "As long as you like it."
"Hmm, delicious." Yu Hao swallowed a dumpling in one bite.
"Eat slowly." Sun Wei looked at her with a smile on her face.
Yu Hao raised his head and said with a smile, "Don't look at me, eat quickly too."
Sun Wei smiled, picked up a dumpling, took a bite, and then changed the subject, saying, "By the way, did you watch the Spring Festival Gala last night?
"I took a look at it twice." Yu Hao replied.
They watched the Spring Festival Gala at Sun Yong's house with Luo Xin, but he suddenly didn't want to think about it anymore. He understood Sun Wei's feelings.
"How is it? Is it still getting worse every year? I don't know what the whole show is about after watching it." Sun Wei pouted slightly and complained.
Yu Hao chuckled, "Indeed, I remember when we were kids, that was the Spring Festival Gala. The ones nowadays are really boring, just for the sake of performing."
"that is."
The two chatted about everything from embarrassing moments in college to gossip in the team, and even talked for a long time about the new menu of the cafeteria chef.
Yu Hao hadn't felt so relaxed in a long time. The blood and coldness in the case files seemed to have been evaporated by the hot steam from the dumplings.
He suddenly discovered that he could actually relax when he was with Sun Wei, and his mood would unconsciously improve.
After finishing the last dumpling, Yu Hao wiped his mouth and suddenly said, "I have a new idea, or rather, a suspect, regarding those two murders."
Sun Wei paused as she was clearing the dishes, then turned around, the smile on her face fading a little: "I knew you couldn't help but want to talk about the case."
Yu Hao scratched his head and said, "Sorry, my mind is full of these things. Isn't it a bit of a letdown?"
Sun Wei smiled, revealing two shallow dimples. "No way! As a criminal police captain, if my mind isn't full of these things, then there's a problem." She looked at Yu Hao and smiled, "Tell me, what did you think of?"
Yu Hao paused briefly and told Zhang Min the content of the video he had discovered and his own portrayal of the murderer.
"Do you suspect Sun Yong?" Sun Wei saw through his thoughts.
Yu Hao nodded. "Zhang Min sent a new video analysis yesterday. Sun Yongjun appeared at Luo Xin's places many times. They said the 'chance encounters' were too frequent."
He continued, "Of course, this alone is too weak. Also, in the Guo Zhong case, Sun Yong's familiarity with the village roads, his footsteps and pace, and possible motives all fit the bill."
"So, what are you going to do?" Sun Wei had already sat down on the sofa next to him, looking at Yu Hao seriously.
"I plan to let nature take its course so as not to alert the enemy. If it is really Sun Yong, he will not be able to escape." Yu Hao looked out the window. Not far away were the two rental houses.
Sun Wei nodded. She turned around, took out her phone from her bag, and opened a video file. "Let me show you something."
The video was shaky, clearly captured by a surveillance camera. It showed a man crossing the street when suddenly a blinding white light shone from a distant building, striking the man's eyes.
The man was obviously stimulated by the sudden strong light and suddenly lost his mind on the road. He was hit by a sports car.
"What is this?" Yu Hao frowned.
"This is the surveillance footage from near the accident scene." Sun Wei's voice dropped. "I had someone pull it up. Look here." She pointed to the corner of the screen. "This light is man-made. It's not a car light or a street light."
Yu Hao was still a little confused.
Sun Wei explained, "Remember Luo Xin mentioned before that someone was following him? This person is Luo Xin's ex-boyfriend, Luo Xue's biological father."
Hearing this, Yu Hao's fingers tightened around the edge of his clothes. "Someone wants to kill him?" Yu Hao's brows knitted together.
"I don't know." Sun Wei put away her phone. "But this is definitely not a simple traffic accident. I've already asked someone to check the surveillance footage in that area. However, it's a shopping mall, and there's a lot of people moving around. Without a target, it's difficult to find any clues."
Yu Hao's fingertips tapped lightly on the table, the rhythm getting faster and faster. He immediately understood what Sun Wei meant by showing her this video.
This coincides with his suspicion of Sun Yong. Because Xiao Yan had been following and harassing Luo Xin in the early stages, Sun Yong, who has always had special feelings for Luo Xin, must have noticed something. Would he regard Xiao Yan as a threat and kill him?
After all, judging from the surveillance video that Sun Wei brought, with such traffic volume and speed, if a car accident occurs, the probability of death will be very high. This behavior clearly contains murderous intent.
Yu Hao frowned and said, "If it's really Sun Yong, he still has a chance of solving the case. He will try to eliminate anyone who is detrimental to Luo Xin."
Sun Wei looked at Yu Hao, who was frowning, and gently smoothed his facial expression with her hands. She smiled and said, "Just solve the case. Don't get too emotional about it. We rely on logic, not emotions. You'll be very tired if you do that."
Yu Hao looked at Sun Wei and laughed, "You're right."
"Don't worry, the truth is right in front of us. Once the chain of evidence is closed, the matter will be solved." Sun Wei had already cleared away everything on the table.
Yu Hao leaned towards her gently.
"what?"
"Let me tell you something I have arranged privately."
"So secretive? There are only two of us in the room, and you're leaning so close to me?" There was a hint of sarcasm in Sun Wei's smile.
Only then did Yu Hao realize that he was very close to her. He could even smell the faint cedar scent of Sun Wei's perfume.
He shrank back, his face flushed. Seeing his expression, Sun Wei smiled again, "I was just kidding. Tell me, what amazing arrangements have you made?"
Yu Hao quietly told her about the arrangement for Liu Bing.
"Is this possible? Will it be dangerous?" Sun Wei was a little surprised.
Yu Hao shook his head. "No, Liu Bing is timid and won't do anything extreme. Besides, we have someone in the team who will follow him later. We guarantee there will be no problem."
"Well, there should be some gains." Sun Wei nodded.
"Besides, didn't Lu Chao say that he found a blurry fingerprint from Guo Zhong? I also took a copy of Sun Yong's fingerprint at his home. Although it can't be locked, it can at least provide some direction for solving the case." Yu Hao said, pointing to a bag of evidence next to the case file.
Sun Wei glanced at it and said, "It must be difficult, right? Especially when it comes to Luo Xin."
Yu Hao lowered his head slightly, but quickly raised it again. "Whether it's difficult or not is not something we criminal police should consider. We have only one goal, and that is to solve the case and bring justice to the deceased and to society."
The sunlight from outside the window shone through the glass, casting a rectangular spot of light on the table. Yu Hao looked at the light and suddenly felt a lot brighter.
From Wang Shun to Guo Zhong, from Luo Xin to Xiao Yan, these seemingly scattered points seemed to be strung together by an invisible thread, and the end of the thread was in Sun Yong's hand.
Sun Wei sat with him for a while and then left. Yu Hao walked her to the door and watched her disappear around the corner before closing the door.
The aroma of dumplings still lingered in the living room, mixed with the faint scent of cedar on Sun Wei's body, making this deserted rental house a little more lively.
He walked over to the coffee table, opened the case file again, and drew a question mark next to Sun Yong's name. How many secrets did this man hide?
Did he smash the wall to destroy evidence?
Is Xiao Yan’s car accident related to him?
