An hour later, Su Ying stood in the alley waiting, as vendors pushed their carts one after another to deliver goods to her.
Because she bought so much, every vendor's eyes lit up when they saw her, and they asked her to come back and patronize their business again next time.
She bought so much stuff that when people asked her what she did, she simply said she worked in the purchasing department. No one asked for more details, which was exactly what Su Ying wanted.
As long as she wasn't pressed for details, she would just give vague answers.
Seeing so many things placed in front of her, Su Ying couldn't help but smile.
With these life-saving supplies, she wouldn't starve to death no matter which remote mountain village she went to, unlike the tragic ending of her previous life.
The pork vendor was the last to arrive, and his eyes nearly widened as he looked at the wide array of meats laid out before him.
"Young lady, your pork has been delivered. Please sign for it."
"Thanks."
After saying thank you, she looked up at the butcher and asked somewhat nervously, "How did you figure out my actual age?"
The pork vendor didn't hide anything and said what he was thinking, "It's simple. Even though you're dressed like an old man, your voice can't lie. No matter how you disguise it, a young girl's voice is still a young girl's voice."
At this moment, Su Ying was extremely grateful for her disguise. She had painted her face black and wrapped a floral headscarf around her head. The look was so tacky that she would never have worn such old-fashioned clothes in the past.
I did this today only out of necessity to cover my tracks. Fortunately, I disguised myself well, so even if people knew I was a young girl, they wouldn't know which family's daughter I was from.
That was close!
If she doesn't put on a facade and someone finds something to use against her, she can forget about going to the countryside to be with Gu Sinian.
I need to be more careful when I go out in the future, so as not to give anyone a handle to use against me. In this special and sensitive era, it is wisest to protect myself.
"Thank you for reminding me."
The butcher nodded. "Young lady, you should be more careful in the future. It's always good to be cautious. If someone with malicious intent sees you buying so much stuff... Anyway, it's always better for you to be careful."
Su Ying nodded and accepted the pork vendor's advice. She couldn't come to this black market again next time, lest something go wrong and she get targeted, which would be a very troublesome thing.
"Okay. I got it. Thank you for reminding me."
"You're welcome."
The two exchanged a few words, and the pork vendor, knowing he couldn't stay any longer, hurriedly left. He had been involved in the black market for some time.
These petty people are incredibly difficult to deal with. The black market is full of these pests. To make a living, you have to endure any grievance.
After all, every black market has its boss, and the phenomenon of gangsters eating gangsters is commonplace.
He has already given all the necessary reminders; anything more is beyond his capabilities.
He doesn't have that much power, nor can he interfere.
Su Ying glanced gratefully at the pork vendor, thanking him for reminding her of the many intricacies and unspoken rules of the black market.
"Anyway, thank you."
The pork vendor ran away as fast as he could, afraid that someone would see him saying these things and get involved in something he shouldn't. He was just an ordinary person who only wanted to support his family; he was the kind of person who had the will but not the ability to do anything else.
"Remember to be more careful next time."
Seeing that there was no one around, Su Ying waved her hand and put everything into her spatial storage.
Just as she finished packing up, she suddenly heard a whistle and hurried footsteps. Su Ying had a bad feeling. The pork vendor had just reminded her that sometimes a whistle doesn't necessarily mean law enforcement officers; it could be a case of gangsters double-crossing each other.
Whether it's true or not, one should always be wary of others.
They immediately hid in the space.
When she came out again, she had changed completely. She was wearing her grandfather's Zhongshan suit and looked like a tomboy. She was completely different from the fake old lady who had entered the space an hour earlier.
When she came out again, she heard a man dressed in flashy clothes complaining.
"Damn! How did an old lady manage to take so much stuff right under our noses in less than an hour? I've never seen anything like it."
Another eccentric man with a Hero brand cigarette in his mouth responded.
“Who says otherwise? Brother Biao told us to guard the gate and wait for the old lady’s supplies to arrive so we could use our law enforcement status to confiscate them all and collect a fine. But we didn’t run into the old lady Brother Biao was talking about for half a day.”
“Anyone who can buy so many things at once must be rich and powerful, and must have a lot of treasures. If we can make a fortune, all the brothers will have a good life.”
"Exactly, exactly. Tell me, how could such a grown woman just vanish into thin air? How did she manage to get out with so many supplies? I didn't see any carts or trucks pass by me. So many supplies, they must have been quite heavy. How did an old lady manage to transport them all?"
The man with the cigarette in his mouth suddenly moved closer. "Could there be something unclean about it?"
The man got angry upon hearing this and pushed the person away, saying, "What nonsense are you talking about? The higher-ups taught us to adhere to materialism and stop using those idealistic things to scare people."
"I was just saying."
"It's not even allowed to talk about it. Look at what kind of nonsense you're spouting. It's quite horrifying."
"Exactly, exactly. My hair is standing on end. Better safe than sorry."
Listening to the conversation between the three, Su Ying felt very grateful to the pork vendor. Without his reminder, she might have been cheated and eaten by someone long ago.
The idea of a jade pendant having a spatial dimension is too shocking to be true. It's best if she keeps this to herself; she doesn't want to stir up any idealistic discussions and cause herself unnecessary trouble.
