After the two descended the mountain, when no one was around, Gu Sinian couldn't resist and secretly reached out to hold that fair and smooth little hand.
Su Ying tried to break free, but couldn't budge an inch. "Be careful someone sees us."
"Who's in this desolate wilderness? Don't worry at all. If anyone comes, I'll let go immediately. That's my bottom line. Either I keep holding on, or I let go if someone comes. It's your choice."
"Rogue."
Su Ying glanced at the man helplessly. She hadn't expected him to be so childish, just like a little kid. She had no choice but to compromise; what else could she do?
She couldn't break free.
The two walked hand in hand along the ridge of the field like a couple deeply in love.
About an hour later, Gu Sinian led the man to the place where the captain would be meeting that day.
We had already gathered intelligence before we arrived; the captain would be patrolling this area today.
Bringing Su Ying to the edge of the field to find him was the wisest thing to do.
"Weren't we looking for the battalion commander? Why did you bring me here?"
Gu Sinian had already spotted Sun Youde lying in the grass and gestured for her to look in Sun Youde's direction.
Su Ying followed Gu Sinian's gaze and saw that there was indeed a person lying in the grass, with a straw hat covering his face and a blade of grass in his mouth.
"Could he be the battalion commander?"
Gu Sinian gave her a look that said, "It's him."
"This is not quite the captain I imagined."
Gu Sinian tapped Su Ying's nose with his finger, "What kind of person is the captain in your imagination?"
In her memory, the brigade leader was a lecherous old man who used his position to molest single female comrades and targeted her for disobeying orders.
Assigning her tasks that she was completely incapable of completing was just a way of telling her to go back to her ex. Many single female educated youths who were sent down to the countryside had no way to express their grievances.
If you submit to him, it's like eating shit—disgusting and unbearable; if you don't, he tortures you to death.
Su Ying was the latter. She gritted her teeth and persevered, enduring one scheme after another, thinking that she was about to get ahead. But the road ahead was only going to be more difficult.
They're just waiting for you to give up and go back to them, so that they can only let bad guys do evil.
Like her, all the educated youth with backbone gritted their teeth and endured it, but they also developed a lot of illnesses from the exhaustion.
Her untimely death was orchestrated by the farm's headman. That old bastard had oppressed so many female educated youths, and even if she knew the farm had that kind of thing, she was powerless to stop it.
Furthermore, given her status as a capitalist's daughter, even if she wrote a letter of denunciation, no one would believe her. They might even turn the tables on her, making her life even more difficult.
The best course of action is to protect oneself.
Xu Manli went to the farm from her previous life. How could someone like Xu Manli let that old slut get away with it? It's bound to end in a lose-lose situation.
Evil people will be punished by other evil people.
She also didn't have the energy to care about things that were thousands of miles away.
Her thoughts returned from a distant past life, and she slowly spoke of the captain in her heart.
“He is serious and unsmiling, a bit old-fashioned, doesn’t listen to the opinions of the people, and does his own thing, only doing what he thinks is right.”
Sun Youde noticed the two men approaching before they got close and overheard their conversation clearly.
Sun Youde had already slowly approached them without them noticing, and with a cold snort, he vindicated himself.
"Is the brigade leader the kind of person you think he is? I'm not that kind of person. I listen to the opinions of the people. I'll listen to anything that is beneficial to Willow Tree Village."
"If anyone can solve the livelihood problems of Willow Tree Village for me, I'll be their lackey."
Su Ying looked at the brigade leader in disbelief. She was completely different from the brigade leader she had imagined; she was more like an older version of Sun Xuelin.
That's quite interesting.
She had spent a few days getting to know Sun Xuelin and admired his character and personality. The person in front of her was Sun Xuelin's father, so his character and conduct must be quite good.
I found myself feeling quite a bit of goodwill towards this old man.
"I heard your entire conversation just now. Let me explain myself a bit. Actually, I didn't eavesdrop on purpose. I listened openly and honestly. Do you believe me?"
Su Ying and Gu Sinian exchanged glances, wanting to laugh but not daring to do so in front of the person involved, as that would be too impolite. They forced themselves to hold it in, almost to the point of internal injury.
Su Ying was a clever little imp; she skipped questions she didn't want to answer and directly changed the subject, "Let's discuss something more meaningful, shall we?"
"What's more meaningful? Tell me, I'm all ears."
"It's about that peach orchard on the mountain. If such a large peach orchard were to be cut down by hand, it would require a lot of manpower and resources. Even if we planted food after cutting down the peach orchard, it might not survive, or it might be worse than it is now."
"With so much manpower and resources invested, it's not something the brigade leader wants to see in the end, is it?"
These words struck a nerve with Sun Youde, whose face turned as black as the bottom of a pot. "I understand what you're saying, but such a large peach orchard takes up too much space and is completely useless. It would be a real waste not to cut it down."
“The cultivated area in Liushu Village is not large to begin with. I have already reported to the higher authorities that we should stop sending so many educated youth to Liushu Village. We really can’t afford to support them.”
"But despite our complaints, the higher-ups simply didn't listen. They said things like the country is having a hard time right now, and the cities can't support so many people, so they have to distribute them to our area."
"I have my own grievances but I can't express them. The problems we raised haven't been resolved, and instead, we're being asked to solve the food problem for so many villagers and educated youth. It's really difficult for me."
