After a night of swirling snow, as dawn broke, Yu Qianqian lay in bed, her mind filled with worries, unable to close her eyes. She got up early the next morning and went to the window to look at the courtyard after the snow. The ground was covered with white frost and snow, and overnight, almost all other colors had disappeared from the world.
At this moment, she could feel an unusual cold current seeping in through the cracks of the window, silently swirling into the room, and penetrating her nightgown to the bone.
Outside, the maids and servants, dressed in thick coats and trousers, each held a broom or shovel. As they cleared the snow, they complained to themselves, "It's really a curse! When we were working in the capital, it was already springtime in March, but here, there's not even a shred of warmth."
"I don't know when the weather will become normal. If it keeps going like this, people will freeze to death!"
Then Xiangxing and Cuihe pushed open the door and came in, inviting her to have breakfast in the main hall. Along the way, she looked up at the gloomy sky, lost in thought, and didn't say a word more.
Xiang Xing and Cui He walked on either side. Seeing her absent-minded appearance, they couldn't help but feel a little uneasy, fearing that her anger from yesterday hadn't subsided and that she would soon have another conflict with the head of the family. However, upon closer inspection, her expression was calm and her eyes were clear, no different from usual. At least for now, she hadn't shown the situation they had anticipated.
The corridor path was covered with a blanket of white snow. The three of them, mistress and servant, walked forward in unison. Xiangxing would glance at Yu Qianqian from time to time, seemingly wanting to say something but holding back. Several times she wanted to confess what she knew, but she thought to herself that she was ultimately just a lowly servant. It was better for the mistress and master to resolve their own affairs. So, she finally suppressed all her worries.
Yu Qianqian stepped into the snow by the roadside, letting the snowflakes reach above her knees, her footsteps uneven as she walked. After a few steps, she suddenly heard someone call her: "Madam..."
She turned around following the sound and saw the butler waving to her from a short distance ahead. She paused slightly in surprise. Cuihe glanced at her expression and quickly replied in a high-pitched voice, "I know, Madam will be here soon."
Yu Qianqian patted the snow off her body and looked up to see the head butler walking over first. Her mood immediately improved, and she quickened her pace toward the main hall, saying as she walked, "Thank you for coming in person, head butler. I'm afraid the master didn't just invite me to breakfast this time."
"It was the master who invited you, Madam, to have breakfast together."
Yu Qianqian became increasingly curious, "Hasn't Master been busy lately? How come he suddenly has free time today?"
"It snowed heavily all night yesterday, so the master can't go out for the time being. He'll be staying home today, so he probably won't be going out to work."
"I can go by myself, you can all leave now." Yu Qianqian left Xiang Xing and Cui He behind and walked straight into the hall.
She probably realized that he had been indifferent when she tried to please him yesterday, and that his initiative to approach her this time was unlikely to bring good news. Actually, she wasn't too worried. At most, it would just be a matter of taking a few concubines. He was already at the age to have children, and since she couldn't do it herself, he could take as many as he wanted.
