Chapter 89 I Want to Go Back to the Palace
Outside this grand hall, there were no palace lanterns or servants, and the sudden sound of a woman's voice was enough to send chills down one's spine.
Chu Mingheng sent someone with some things.
He seemed not to hear Zeng's cries and pleas, but simply looked down at her with cold indifference and indifference in his eyes.
Chen Kang'an, standing behind the emperor, couldn't help but shudder, feeling that His Majesty had been acting a bit too fiercely lately.
Normally, His Majesty can hide his murderous aura, maintaining his dignity and indifference, but he's not so frightening as to silence people.
However, in recent days, he sometimes felt that His Majesty seemed to be surrounded by the aura of blood, and that His Majesty always seemed to be about to kill someone, but His Majesty did not kill anyone.
Thinking of the Zeng family, Chen Kang'an shook his head knowingly. It wasn't that they hadn't killed anyone; it was just that he hadn't had time to give the order to kill them yet.
The Zeng and Chen families should be removed from the imperial city register from this day forward.
"You want me to spare your life?" Chu Mingheng said calmly.
Zeng was so busy that he kept kowtowing.
"I will not kill you now." Chu Mingheng turned his gaze behind him.
Chen Kang'an immediately presented the pot of wine he had brought, without even preparing a cup, and said with a smile to the kneeling Zeng Shi: "This is a medicine made by Physician Zheng of the Imperial Hospital. It is made from various poisonous insects and filthy things. After taking it, you will not die, but you will suffer greatly. It is His Majesty's grace."
Upon hearing this, Zeng's hand trembled, and she hurriedly knelt down to try and get away, shaking her head and screaming in alarm, while waving her hands wildly in an attempt to spill the wine.
"Your Majesty! Your Majesty, please forgive me!"
Seeing that pleading for forgiveness was useless, she gritted her teeth and opened her mouth: "I...I know about the burning of Kunning Palace—"
She spoke in a low voice, but didn't finish her sentence.
However, upon hearing her mention the words "Kunning Palace," Chen Kang'an's hand holding the wine pot trembled slightly, and even Luo Yun, who was standing to the side, was somewhat alarmed.
Chu Mingheng lowered his eyes and looked at Zeng Shi expressionlessly.
Zeng hid behind the wall, trembling but thinking herself calm, trying to discuss with him: "Back then... back then, the fire in Kunning Palace was deliberately set on fire—Your Majesty thought that everyone had been dealt with by the late Emperor... but actually, that's not true!"
After she finished speaking, seeing that Chu Mingheng didn't react in any particular way, she wasn't very confident, but this was the only possibility she had.
So he continued, "If Your Majesty can release me, I will tell Your Majesty who did that..."
A gentle breeze swept by, and the courtyard was quiet.
Chu Mingheng raised his chin slightly, gesturing to Chen Kang'an: "Pour her wine, then cut off her tongue."
Zeng's eyes widened in horror. She tried to step forward, but the palace servants held her back tightly, binding her hands and feet to shut her mouth, preventing her from uttering a single word.
Chu Mingheng turned and left the palace, calmly ordering, "Return to Taichen Palace."
-
When he returned, Lan Wu was still sleeping soundly on the bed. If it weren't for the fact that the bed in the small palace was too messy and erotic, and he was worried that Lan Wu would be scared if she woke up and found herself alone, he really wouldn't want Lan Wu to leave there.
Lan Wu was wearing only a thin nightgown and was fast asleep, hugging her blanket. A little while later, the bed curtains were drawn open and then closed again, and Chu Mingheng came to her side.
She vaguely felt someone was watching her, but she was fast asleep and the thought quickly faded away.
I woke up the next afternoon.
The unfamiliar place before her made her head spin.
He rolled over, glanced vaguely at the outside of the curtain, and then realized where he was.
Why is she still in Taichen Palace?
Lan Wu sat up, feeling aches and pains in her back and legs. She gritted her teeth, opened her mouth, and called for the palace servants outside to come in.
Tea was served on a low table beside the bed, which she reached out and drank.
Luo Yun entered the hall.
"Your Majesty, you're awake." Luo Yun helped her pull back the bed curtains and saw that she was frowning and looked uncomfortable. She said, "It's already past noon, Your Majesty. His Majesty instructed that once you've woken up, you should send someone to inform the Emperor."
Lan Wu pressed her head, remembering how Chu Mingheng had tricked her into coming to that awful little palace yesterday, where she was kept in darkness and prevented from escaping.
"I want to go back to the palace," she said. "Give me a wash and change my clothes, I want to go back to the palace."
This is infuriating! Chu Mingheng must have lost his mind that day. How could he treat her like that? She's angry!
Luo Yun observed her expression, softly replied "yes," and summoned the palace maids serving outside to help her wash and dress.
Whether intentionally or not, Chu Mingheng arrived just as the palace maids finished washing and dressing her.
Lan Wu was so angry that she gritted her teeth just by looking at him. When the two maids were combing her hair, their faces were red and they knew something was wrong. Looking closely in the mirror, she noticed that there was a ring of bite marks on her neck. Although they were not deep, they were thin and red. How could they not attract attention?
Chu Mingheng stood behind her and picked out a kingfisher feather hairpin from the dressing case to put on her hair.
Lan Wu took it off and handed it to the palace maid beside her.
The palace maid took the hairpin with limp hands, barely daring to look up.
Chu Mingheng chuckled softly, then took the hairpin back. This time, looking at Lan Wu's puffed-up face in the bronze mirror, he coaxed her, "Is it alright to wear it here?"
Lan Wu glanced at him, then lowered her eyes and ignored him.
The palace servants were terrified; they had never seen anything like this before.
Fortunately, Luo Yun arrived in time and led all the palace servants out of the hall.
Chu Mingheng put the hairpin in her hair again, then bent down and said, "It looks good."
“Ugly!” Lan Wu stood up and retorted.
The sudden movement made her waist feel weak and sore. She frowned, and was quickly carried by Chu Mingheng to sit on the soft couch next to her.
"Where are you ugly? Awu is the prettiest." He smiled gently and coaxed her.
Lan Wu's throat was still a little sore, and she couldn't even manage a smile. She reached out to push him away.
The moment she reached out, Chu Mingheng grabbed her hand and kissed her.
"Awu, don't be angry anymore. It's bad for your health if you get angry."
"I...I want to go back—I'm never coming to this awful place again..." She pursed her lips, unable to free her hands, so she banged her head against someone.
With such limited strength, she not only failed to hurt the person she bumped into, but also felt dizzy and leaned her head against Chu Mingheng's chest.
"Okay, okay, I won't come."
"Go get something to eat first, and I'll take you back after you've had your meal." Chu Mingheng discussed with her, and then sent word to have someone prepare the meal.
Lan Wu calmed down a bit, but her temper remained.
She had already slept past lunchtime, so Chu Mingheng came to serve her her meal, practically doing everything he could for her.
Lan Wu glanced at him and realized that he knew he had done it yesterday.
This is never going to end.
She counted how many days it had been going on. Did they really think she wouldn't do anything wrong?
In the afternoon, she would call Physician Lin over to examine her pulse and find out what was wrong with her. Ideally, she wanted to make sure that Chu Mingheng wouldn't be able to touch her for ten days or half a month.
After the meal, Lan Wu felt sleepy again. She asked Chu Mingheng to hold her and massage her waist, murmuring that she would go back after a while. But she closed her eyes and fell asleep again soon after.
