Chapter 139 Doing Your Hair
He tricked Lan Wu into giving him a kiss and a sweet nothing. Chu Mingheng was overjoyed and didn't react much. Even when Lan Wu exposed his lie, he was still chuckling.
"Be serious," Lan Wu said coldly.
She was getting anxious: "You said there was something else going on at the banquet, but you didn't say what it was. Wouldn't it be a waste of time if we just went through with it like this?"
The key question is, where did the other Chu Mingheng go?
"It won't delay anything, I remember. Awu, just wait and see the show." Chu Mingheng said, then nuzzled her nose, clearly not caring much.
Lan Wu was speechless for a moment, then looked back at herself in the mirror, at her wit's end: "Then you go out first and call someone in to do my makeup. Why are you pushing others away like that..."
The last half of the sentence left me a little puzzled; I didn't know what Chu Mingheng's intention was.
Chu Mingheng reached out and gently traced the skin of her neck with his fingertips. As if he had thought of something, his expression suddenly turned ferocious for a moment. He said in a deep voice, "No one can hurt you."
Lan Wu frowned upon hearing this, and without any hesitation, she revealed the bite mark on her neck and showed it to him in detail.
"What you bit is not presentable. I need to cover it up with a ribbon, understand?"
After Lan Wu finished speaking, she picked up the ribbon and gently tied a knot around her neck in front of the mirror to cover up the mark.
After doing all that, she saw that Chu Mingheng was still somewhat sullen and didn't move, so she said, "Why aren't you going to call someone in for me?"
"I will do your hair and makeup," Chu Mingheng said, looking into her eyes.
Who's coming?
It wasn't until she was forced to sit in front of the mirror and saw Chu Mingheng skillfully combing her hair that Lan Wu realized what was happening.
Chu Mingheng was not skilled at styling women's hair, yet he deftly styled her hair into a bun, then searched for hairpins and ornaments on the table, adorning her with them one by one, as if he had done so a thousand times before, as if it were second nature.
Lan Wu looked at him with suspicion and asked the question that had been on her mind: "How do you know how to comb hair?"
"It's just a matter of skill; I'll learn it after a little practice." Chu Mingheng seemed unconcerned, and then searched for cinnabar on the table to apply to her lips.
Lan Wu is beautiful; even without makeup, she is exceptionally pretty. Her eyes are bright and dark, and when she looks at someone, they seem to be able to captivate their soul.
At this moment, she stared straight at Chu Mingheng, slightly parted her lips to let him apply lip rouge to her, her long, curled eyelashes drooping down, her eyes fixed intently on him, clearly showing that she did not believe the reasons he gave.
However, this was Chu Mingheng from the previous life. In the end, Lan Wu didn't know what Chu Mingheng had gone through after her death in the previous life.
But it's clear that we can't ask those questions right now.
Chu Mingheng is acting strangely.
He applied lip rouge to her lips and then wanted to kiss her.
Lan Wu covered his mouth, preventing him from succeeding.
"The banquet is about to start, we should head out."
Chu Mingheng looked unhappy, even a little irritated. He stood up, glanced in the direction of the palace entrance, and remained silent, seemingly pondering something.
Before he could figure it out, Lan Wu tugged at his sleeve, wanting to go out with him.
Outside the palace gate, Chen Kang'an was waiting on one side. When he saw Chu Mingheng and Lan Wu come out together, he immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
"Your Majesty, this is the medicine brought by the imperial physician." It's cooled down a bit now, so it's drinkable.
Lan Wu hadn't forgotten to ask what the imperial physician had said. Since Chu Mingheng hadn't taken it to heart, Chen Kang'an must know.
Upon hearing this, Chen Kang'an quickly replied with every word.
Chu Mingheng finished drinking the medicine in the bowl without saying a word. After Lan Wu finished asking her questions, he pulled Lan Wu and walked towards the front hall.
Between the rear hall and the front hall was a long corridor. Lan Wu walked very slowly, her legs were weak, and she was wrapped in a cloak. Her bright black eyes and rosy lips made her look lovely no matter how you looked at her.
Chu Mingheng let her walk slowly, occasionally squeezing her hand.
When they arrived at the front hall, the warmth inside mingled with the cool fragrance of the red plum blossoms that had been reintroduced into the hall. Bright palace lanterns and candlelight illuminated the scene, and apart from the fewer people present, the impact of the afternoon's revelation was no longer visible.
Although it was warm inside the palace, the walk along the corridor was enough for Lan Wu to know how cold it was tonight.
Will it snow tonight?
Chu Mingheng's gaze swept down, looking from inside the hall to outside, before he uttered a casual, "Probably."
It wasn't time yet, but the seating arrangements below had already been rearranged, and several concubines were present. When they saw that Lan Wu and Chu Mingheng had come together, their eyes showed a hint of envy, but they quickly suppressed it. Such a big incident had just happened that afternoon; who knew whether His Majesty was happy or unhappy at this moment?
Lan Wu's seat remained unchanged, but Princess Yi Zhen had already left the palace, and the person sitting next to her became Consort Shu.
Consort Shu has not arrived yet.
She looked down and was about to sit down when her arm was grabbed again. She turned around and bumped into Chu Mingheng's arms.
"Where to?"
Lan Wu quickly pointed to her seat below, fearing he would make trouble, and said, "Your Majesty, I should sit below."
"What do you mean 'should'? You sit next to me."
After saying that, Chu Mingheng had someone add another table to his seat.
Lan Wu had nothing to say.
At this moment, two people entered from the direction of the palace entrance; they were Consort Wen and Consort Shu.
Consort Shu appeared to be talking to Consort Wen. When the two entered the hall, they saw someone sitting in the seat of honor. They seemed not to have expected His Majesty to arrive so early, and they both fell silent and quickly went forward to the hall to pay their respects to Chu Mingheng.
Wen Zhaoyi's illness must not have fully recovered yet; from Lan Wu's perspective, she could see that Wen Zhaoyi's face still looked somewhat sickly.
However, Chu Mingheng issued an order in the afternoon that all the concubines should be present, so she still rushed over.
Lan Wu snapped out of her daze and turned her head to look at Chu Mingheng with a strange expression.
The people below have been kneeling for so long, why aren't they allowed to get up?
Have you forgotten?
Chu Mingheng lowered his eyes and saw Consort Shu kneeling in the center of the main hall. His expression was indifferent. Although he was looking at a person, he seemed extremely violent, as if he were looking at a dead person. The coldness in his eyes was enough to make people's hearts tremble.
The others also sensed that something was wrong, and they all kept their eyes down and dared not say a word.
Then someone else came in from outside the hall and greeted Chu Mingheng.
Chu Mingheng then glanced over and said in a calm voice, "Get up."
Consort Shu stood up, bewildered and wary. She glanced at Consort Wen beside her, but couldn't discern anything from her expression. So she had no choice but to retreat to her seat without making a sound.
The empty space on the left was where Lan Wu was supposed to sit. Now that she was gone, she had only glanced at the figure beside His Majesty and understood what was going on. She lowered her eyes and stared at the wine cup in front of her without saying a word.
