Chapter 106, One Hundred and Sixth Incident

Chapter 106, One Hundred and Sixth Incident

Startled, Shen Mi sat up abruptly, her heart pounding, her hands instinctively bracing themselves on the edge of the sofa. The person in front of her slowly stood up, his long, dark blue hair cascading down to his waist, the earrings hanging from his ears fully exposed as he stood, their bright red gleaming against the television lights behind him.

His eyes were exceptionally deep in the dim light, with an unfathomable sharpness, as if they could see right through a person's mind. Chen Mi tensed up, almost forgetting to breathe, his fingers clenched white on the sofa.

Shen Mi looked around. The room was dark, just as it had been before she fell asleep. It seemed that Dan Heng and Jing Yuan had not returned yet.

Blade's gaze slowly fell on her, a slight smile playing on his lips, a dangerous yet playful expression: "You're awake... Shen Mi."

"You...how did you get in? You scared me half to death." Shen Mi felt a jolt of her heart pounding beneath her hand, and she clutched her chest, still shaken.

Ren squinted, his gaze slowly falling on her face. Thinking of yesterday's events, he frowned unhappily: "Have you forgotten again?"

Shen Mi shook his head and quickly denied it: "No, no."

"good."

Shen Mi cautiously examined the blade, slowly rising from the sofa, his tone tinged with a hint of probing: "You came to see me... not to ask me how to resolve the Demonic Yin Body issue, right..."

A smile curled at the corner of his lips, revealing a knowing look.

"Danheng is unwilling to say because there is hatred and resentment between us, and too many things that cannot be explained." Ren's voice was low, but an indescribable emotion flashed in his eyes. "I also disdain to get answers from him. You are different... I saved your life."

Shen Mi sighed softly, looked up at him directly, and a half-smile appeared on her lips as she ruthlessly exposed him: "That was a deal, a deal. And I also told you about Dan Heng's whereabouts, didn't I?"

The moment the words left his mouth, Ren's expression turned icy. An impatience and anger emanated from him like a storm. He slowly leaned down, casting a shadow over Shen Mi, and chuckled softly, "Heh...you really think I'm a fool? Do you think I can't tell the difference between truth and falsehood?"

Shen Mi's heart tightened, and he subconsciously took a step back, but the sofa blocked his leg, leaving him nowhere to retreat.

Ren narrowed his eyes, crossed his arms, and his gaze was so sharp it seemed he wanted to dissect her.

Shen Mi felt a chill run down her spine under that gaze, and she was so guilty that she dared not breathe. She knew the clue from months ago was outdated, but she still gritted her teeth and handed it over to Ren. She thought she could hide it, but under those cold eyes, she suddenly felt that she couldn't hide any of her little thoughts.

Her eyes flickered for a moment.

Ren snorted coldly, but his smile became even more dangerous: "Just as I thought."

He took a step closer, and Shen Mi felt the air around him tighten and become compressed.

“Chen Mi,” his voice was low, with a hint of dangerous amusement, “are you toying with me? Hmm?”

Those eyes, sharp as blades, were fixed on her, seeing clearly the panic in her eyes.

Shen Mi's heart pounded, and she instinctively gripped the sofa cushions behind her. She knew that the fear on her face was impossible to hide at this moment.

Ren suddenly paused for a moment, as if realizing he had gone too far. His brow furrowed almost imperceptibly, and after a moment of silence, he finally took a step back, creating distance between them.

He coughed lightly, breaking the oppressive atmosphere: "Never mind, it's not important anymore. Now you just need to tell me how you eliminated the demonic spirit."

The lights inside flickered slightly, and Ren's eyes were so dark they seemed to drag people into an abyss, stubborn and dangerous. Chen Mi's heart suddenly tightened.

She pursed her lips and didn't answer, but her mind was racing.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the clock on the wall; the hands were already stopped at twelve.

—Is it already this late?

The thought that Danheng and Jingyuan might return at any moment filled Chen Mi with even more panic. She absolutely could not let them run into Ren.

Almost instinctively, she reached out and grabbed Ren's arm, urging him in a low voice, "Come with me."

Ren was slightly taken aback. He looked down at the hand that was tightly gripping his sleeve, his eyes flashing, but he did not pull away.

Shen Mi's heart was pounding, and she didn't dare to look him in the eye. She just kept dragging him toward the door.

Footsteps echoed in the empty corridor. With a soft "click" as the doorknob turned, the night wind rushed in from outside, brushing against her hair and stroking her long, jet-black hair.

He finally spoke, his voice carrying a faint hint of amusement: "Afraid someone will see?"

Shen Mi's heart skipped a beat, and he paused for a moment, but he still braced himself and opened the door, saying in a low voice, "...In short, you can't stay here."

Looking at her serious expression, Ren couldn't help but curl his lips into a smile. He leaned down, his breath almost brushing against her earlobe, and said, word by word, "I... refuse."

Shen Mi's heart tightened suddenly, but she still clenched her fists, took a deep breath, and forcefully suppressed the anger rising in her throat. She pushed away the blade that was brought to her face, raised her head, and a sly smile suddenly bloomed on her stubborn expression. She retorted crisply, "As for the matter of the Demon Yin Body, I... also... have... no... information... to give!"

She paused deliberately, raised an eyebrow, and emphasized as if to add insult to injury: "Three more words than you."

After saying that, Shen Mi shook his head defiantly, looking at him with a hint of provocation and his eyes sparkling.

Ren was stunned for a moment, as if he was dazzled by her unexpected radiance, and his heart suddenly skipped a beat—for a moment, he was unusually lost in thought.

The man before him seemed to be enveloped in some kind of radiance, his smile cunning and vivid. But his consciousness was instantly pulled away from this moment, and he was vaguely transported back to that chaotic and unreal sea.

Amidst the misty haze, countless shimmering white jellyfish floated slowly in the void, their tentacles swaying gently, emitting a quiet glow, like stars quietly illuminating the night.

Ever since their big argument and unpleasant parting, Chen Mi had been repeatedly recalling their conversation. That night at the waterfall, she had a high fever and was delirious, so much so that she could hardly breathe. But the next morning, she seemed like a completely different person, her weakness gone.

She initially thought it was all thanks to the system. After all, as a "variable" forcibly pulled into this world, the system often patched up her vulnerabilities at crucial moments, so she naturally attributed her recovery to compensation from the program.

This was the first time Shen Mi had realized that the power of abundance could actually affect her, an outsider. But what shocked her even more was that this power was not rejected by the "code".

The blade's blood, carrying abundant "blessings," broke through that invisible shackle and truly acted upon her.

In that instant, an indescribable wave of emotion surged within Shen Mi's heart.

"I'm standing right in front of you, and you're still lost in thought?" Ren reached out and lifted her chin, his golden-red eyes locking onto her dark ones. Reflected in her deep, night-like eyes, he felt a strange sense of oppression.

He tightened his grip slightly, pinching Shen Mi's cheek. The delicate, soft touch, coupled with her subtle struggles, stirred his long-dormant heart. Her face was forced into a contortion, her lips pouting, making her even more striking. His face drew closer, and Shen Mi's heart pounded like a drum. A sudden, absurd premonition arose within her—he wouldn't…he wouldn't really…

"Hey! What...what are you doing? We're arguing right now!"

"Don't make a sound."

Suddenly, Ren released her face, but then made an even more unpredictable move. Shen Mi's eyes widened, her breathing quickened, and her heart pounded like a drum. The next moment, those cool lips landed on her face, stopping just two centimeters away from her lips—right in front of her dimples.

For a moment, Shen Mi felt as if her heartbeat had been paused. She froze, her breathing and thoughts stopped, and she could only stiffly let everything happen.

It wasn't just Shen Mi who was suffocating, but also Dan Heng, who opened the door at the same time...

The heavy creaking of the door hinges was particularly jarring in the deathly silence, like a blunt knife slicing through the air.

Danheng, who was standing at the door, happened to witness this scene.

He suddenly stopped, his black clothes swaying gently in the night breeze. His tall figure stood frozen in the doorway, his cold, stern face like a ceramic jar pieced together with glue, cracking instantly until it finally shattered.

His eyes were fixed on the scene before him: Ren was defiantly pulling Shen Mi into his arms. Dan Hengshuang's usually cold and restrained pupils suddenly narrowed, filled with disbelief, as if all his reason had been drained away in that instant.

Shen Mi snapped back to her senses, her heart tightening. In a panic, she forcefully pushed the blade away and staggered to the side to look at Dan Heng. Her voice was urgent and trembling: "Dan Heng, it's not what you see!"

But Ren, standing to the side, seemed oblivious. A cold smile curved his lips as he half-raised his eyes, looking at Dan Heng with a half-smile. He said in a low, hoarse voice, "You've come back at just the right time."

Amidst the chaotic storm, a new figure silently entered. Jing Yuan walked to the doorway and saw Dan Heng standing frozen at the entrance, his eyes as cold as ice. He frowned slightly and followed Dan Heng's gaze into the courtyard, where he witnessed an undeniable scene.

Shen Mi could almost hear her own heart pounding. She opened her mouth, about to explain something more.

Danheng's eyes were completely frozen. In that instant, he didn't speak, didn't accuse, but just looked at her with extreme coldness and calmness, his eyes suppressing complex emotions that were almost overflowing.

Then he turned around.

Her clothes fluttered in the night wind, her back view resolute and lonely. There was no other sound, only the crisp sound of her boots on the stone steps, fading into the distance.

Shen Mi stared blankly at the departing figure, as if a sharp knife had ripped open her heart, causing her excruciating pain that made her almost suffocate.

She took a sudden step forward, wanting to catch up, but was stopped by Ren's outstretched hand.

"Why did you chase after him so late?"

Shen Mi suddenly looked up, glaring angrily at Ren. She shook off his hand, her chest heaving: "It's all because of you!"

Having said that, Shen Mi resolutely walked around the blade blocking her way, her steps hurried, her gaze fixed on the direction outside the door. That figure seemed to be an invisible thread pulling at her heart; she knew—if she hesitated any longer, she would never be able to catch up with that person again.

Jing Yuan slightly turned his body, letting her brush against his shoulder. The night wind whipped her hair, carrying a resolute chill as it swept across his cheek. Shen Mi didn't hesitate for a moment, resolutely running in the direction Dan Heng had left.

He watched silently, his gaze following the receding figure. She never gave him a single glance, as if her eyes and heart were only filled with that figure. Even after Shen Mi disappeared into the depths of the night, Jing Yuan remained motionless, his gaze lingering, as if trapped in some indescribable emptiness and silence.

Why is the twilight so lush, yet the candles refuse to be lit?
