Chapter 24 The Night's Rendezvous (Part 3) Dan Heng's hand tightened almost imperceptibly. ...
The doctor's movements were efficient, and the needle insertion was quick, causing almost no pain. In the short time that Chen Mi was stunned, she heard the person beside her say, "All done."
The doctor then scheduled an X-ray. Shen Mi was asked to change into a special examination gown, walk into another room, and stand in front of the X-ray machine. After assuming the correct position and ensuring there were no metal objects, she pressed the button.
The X-ray was taken in just a few seconds.
The examination was completed quickly. The doctor asked her briefly about any other physical symptoms and then told her, "All done. Once all the test results are available, we will print out the report and leave it at your dormitory door."
Shen Mi nodded in understanding. After all that fuss, it was already noon.
As he left, the printer in the corner of the room was spitting out paper. Hearing the sound, Shen Mi didn't pay attention and quickly walked out the door.
The doctor picked up the document, his gaze lingering on the prominently printed "6013". After a quick glance at the report, he suspiciously scanned his surroundings to confirm whether Shen Mi had truly left.
After confirming that no one was around, he gently put down the report, picked up the phone on the table, and dialed a number.
After the call was connected, the doctor spoke in a low, respectful voice: "The test results for 6013 are in; she is in good health."
A slight response came from the other end of the phone; after a few simple words of advice, the call ended.
The doctor put the report into a file bag and handed it to the person on duty at the door when he left.
"I'll deliver it to her dorm room door tomorrow."
Once outside, Chen Mi headed straight for the cafeteria. Since being promoted to team leader, the food had become worlds apart from what she ate before. The last time she ate something this good was with a boxed lunch that Dan Heng had given her.
Thinking of Danheng, Shen Mi suddenly felt uneasy about meeting him tonight.
A strange sense of unease, an indescribable feeling, even though I used to see him almost every day.
Go back and draw down all the layouts I saw in the office today.
Lunchtime had passed quite a while ago, and the cafeteria was deserted. Chen Mi looked at the boiled eggs floating in the warm water, quietly took six, and casually stuffed them into his pocket. Then he took his tray to the self-service machine to get his food.
Luckily, I had enough pockets. I brought so many boiled eggs not for any other reason than to improve Savare's diet.
One a day would be enough for her for six days.
In fact, Shen Mi didn't know that next to the container holding the boiled eggs, there was a line of small print: "Food left behind, please take it yourself."
If they saw Shen Mi, they would probably only feel mocked and would rather stay than share the food with others.
After finishing his meal, Shen Mi returned to his post and waited for night to fall.
Without a moon, there's nowhere to place one's longing.
The night was deep, but the lights in Zone C were unlike those in Zone E, which shone as brightly as day. Patrolling security personnel moved back and forth, their shadows stretching long in the lamplight. Shen Mi walked along the dimly lit path, avoiding the light sources, towards the place she had arranged to meet Dan Heng. Ever since her embarrassing vomiting incident in the office, her stomach had been upset.
However, she could endure it; clutching her stomach, Chen Mi did not slow down.
Dan Heng had already arrived, and Shen Mi spotted him from a distance. It seemed that since it was their first time meeting in Zone C, he had deliberately stood in a prominent position to avoid her not being able to find him.
Shen Mi's lips curled up slightly as he quickened his pace.
As I approached, he stood ramrod straight, like a pine tree standing tall in the world. His posture remained as serene as ever, as if he were used to this kind of waiting, listening to the cold sounds, the clouds deep and the shadows unseen.
Only when Shen Mi approached did he slightly turn his head and let his gaze fall on her.
"How are you?" His voice was neither loud nor soft, and he began with small talk. Although it was only three short words, he asked not only about her condition after entering Zone C, but also about her situation today.
"It's alright. I went into the office during the meeting today." Shen Mi took out a folded piece of paper from his pocket and handed it over: "Here, the office layout diagram. I wrote it down while they were in the meeting."
Dan Heng took the paper and unfolded it. Although the paper was a little wrinkled, the lines on it were very clear, drawing the structure of the office: the arrangement of desks and chairs, the distribution of cabinets, the location of doors and windows, and even the blind spots of the cameras were marked.
The lines on the drawing were neat and clear, and the annotations were very detailed. His gaze swept over the details, and he nodded slightly: "Well drawn."
Shen Mi raised an eyebrow: "Couldn't you have been a little more specific in your praise?"
Danheng didn't respond, gesturing for her to continue.
Shen Mi didn't hold it against him and said softly, "There are some things I'm not entirely sure about, so I might need you to take another look."
Danheng's gaze lingered on the paper, gradually becoming deep, as if he were quickly memorizing this information.
After a moment, he nodded: "That's detailed enough. We can't rush finding evidence. First, get used to the environment there and protect yourself. I'll get the detailed layout through other channels."
Shen Mi understood his concerns. Now was not the time to rush. She smiled and was about to speak when she suddenly remembered something. She reached into her pocket, took out a few boiled eggs, and handed them to Dan Heng.
"Please give this to Savare for me."
Danheng looked down at the eggs in her hand, his brows furrowing slightly as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he reached out and took them, silently putting them away.
Shen Mi noticed his subtle movements and casually asked, "What's wrong?"
Dan Heng paused, then lowered his eyes and asked, "Why did you decide to send her this?"
“The leftover food in the cafeteria will be thrown away sooner or later if no one takes it.” Shen Mi sighed as he thought of Savare. “She is too thin and malnourished. Boiled eggs are already a good supplement for her.”
Is there anything else?
Shen Mi shook his head. "That's all. Just this egg."
Dan Heng looked at her, his gaze falling on her pale, bloodless face, but his voice was so calm that it revealed no emotion, as if he were concealing the undercurrents beneath the surface of a lake: "That's not what I'm asking. You look terrible. Is something wrong?"
Shen Mi waved his hand dismissively and said, "It's nothing. I just went to the infirmary during the day and had a physical exam. It took quite a while, and my stomach is acting up."
Danheng looked at her, but his gaze didn't seem to believe what she was saying.
Shen Mi stared at him without saying a word, as if she wanted to keep staring at him until he was willing to talk. Her stubborn look reminded people of a widely circulated meme of Danheng Cat.
Shen Mi couldn't help but chuckle softly.
Danheng: ?
"What are you laughing at?" Dan Heng asked, puzzled. Shen Mi looked at him, his serious expression exactly matching the image in his mind, which made him laugh even harder.
"It's nothing, seeing you makes my stomach feel much better," Shen Mi said with a smile.
She wanted to gloss over it, but Danheng wouldn't have any of it; his keen insight startled her.
She didn't mention Kulun once tonight.
"Ku..." Dan Heng was about to ask her if Kulun had made any strange moves when he saw her bend over and vomit in pain.
Shen Mi's stomach churned violently, and the familiar nausea from that morning suddenly surged up her throat, almost making her unable to hold it in.
She frowned, raised her hand to cover her mouth, and tried to calm herself down, but the discomfort in her throat continued to spread, making it difficult for her to cope.
Dan Heng immediately noticed her unusual behavior, his gaze darkening and his voice lowering slightly: "What's wrong?"
Shen Mi waved his hand to indicate that he was fine, but his face was even paler than before, and a layer of fine sweat even seeped from his forehead.
As Dan Heng observed her condition, his expression gradually became serious.
He thought of the rumors circulating in District E during this period, and originally thought that the smokescreen she released would gradually fade away over time.
These rumors were just the speculations of bored people, but at this moment, seeing Shen Mi's obviously uncomfortable appearance, his brows furrowed even more unconsciously.
"6013." His voice was lowered, carrying a hint of coldness. "Did someone do something to you?"
Shen Mi had just calmed down when he heard Dan Heng's words and paused for a moment. He looked up at him, as if he didn't understand what he meant.
Dan Heng clenched his fists nervously and said in a deep voice, "Did something bad happen to you today?"
Shen Mi's expression was still not good. After hearing his question, she was silent for a moment, as if she was thinking about how to answer.
After a moment, she slowly spoke: "...Nothing special."
Danheng remained silent, waiting for her to continue.
Shen Mi took a deep breath and said calmly, "It's just that... I ran into Kulen at the office door today, and he said some random things."
Shen Mi spoke of it casually, as if it were just a trivial matter, but she herself did not realize that when she mentioned the name "Kulun," there was a slight, almost imperceptible tremor in her voice.
Dan Heng's eyes darkened slightly, and he stared calmly at her expression, as if waiting for her to tell the truth.
Shen Mi remained silent for a moment, then finally sighed: "...It's probably just my imagination."
Danheng didn't speak, but simply waited quietly for her to continue.
"You know about the rumors circulating lately, saying that Kulen is paying 'special attention' to me, which is why I've risen so quickly. Some have even suggested that I might have done something 'improper'."
“I knew about these things, and even took a chance to think that this rumor might make me safer…” At this point, Shen Mi paused for a moment, then smiled bitterly, “I didn’t expect it to be bait to lure the tiger into its den.”
He personally placed himself under his tiger's claws.
Danheng's fingers tightened almost imperceptibly.
Even if Shen Mi didn't say anything more, he could easily piece together Kulen's true intentions.
For Shen Mi, Kulen's attitude was more dangerous than the rumors. Rumors are merely shadows, unable to harm anyone, but if the person creating the shadow harbors malice, then they become a real threat.
“…6013.” Dan Heng suddenly spoke, his voice as low as frost, “Stay away from him from now on. It’s difficult to transfer you back to Zone E, but it’s not impossible…”
