Chapter 31 Mission Complete. Congratulations, host! You have completed the main quest: You have obtained...
Shen Mi's consciousness was not completely cut off; she was in a very "clever" coma, even controlling the frequency of her eyelid tremors perfectly.
When she felt herself being picked up, the person deliberately avoided her injured left arm.
Kulen carried her into the innermost room of the office, and the door slammed shut behind her.
For a moment, she really wanted to open her eyes and run away, but she quickly dismissed the thought.
If you're afraid, all your previous efforts will be in vain.
She lay there quietly. Feeling his gaze linger on her, she heard him sigh softly, then his hand left her arm, making a soft rustling sound.
What is he doing?
Soon, the answer was revealed. He took off her coat, tossed the blood-stained clothes aside, and it sounded as if he was going to bandage her wound.
Ke Chenmi's stun gun was hidden in the inner lining of that jacket!
Her pupils involuntarily contracted for a moment beneath her closed eyelids, but fortunately, Cullen's attention was entirely on her hands.
Kulen pressed his fingertips against her wound, carefully cleaning away the blood. He repeatedly wiped the wound with cotton soaked in disinfectant, causing her to make a soft sound of pain. After disinfection, he wrapped the bandage around her arm and tied it securely.
After a pause, Shen Mi could feel his gaze lingering on her face, his fingertips slowly, very slowly, moving upwards...
Hold on!
Shen Mi forced herself to maintain a steady breathing rhythm, subtly leaning her cheek against the edge of the sofa to conceal the instinctive tension and wariness that welled up within her. Reason repeatedly reminded her: she couldn't open her eyes, she couldn't tremble, she couldn't reveal herself.
Kulen's movements were very gentle, but Shen Mi could clearly feel his fingertips moving upwards along the curve of her arm; every inch of movement felt more like a gentle caress than a simple touch on a wound. How disgusting.
Shen Mi's shoulders stiffened, but he quickly forced himself to relax, as too much vigilance would only give him away.
"...The wound is a bit deep, we might need to call the medical staff." He muttered to himself, as if talking to himself, or perhaps trying to observe her.
The hands finally stopped at her shoulders, gently adjusted the tightness of the bandage, and then, without warning, lifted a few strands of hair from the edge of her neck.
Shen Mi's heart leaped into her throat. The other person swept her hair back and covered her body with a blanket.
A moment later, Kulun stood up.
"Asleep? Then get some rest," he said softly, as if trying to convince himself.
Shen Mi continued to pretend to be asleep, offering no response.
Finally, the sound of his footsteps leaving echoed from the doorway. The iron gate closed softly with another soft click—he was gone.
After waiting for a full five minutes and confirming that there was no sound outside, Chen Mi slowly opened his eyes.
She didn't get up immediately, but instead turned her head and squinted as she slowly looked around.
The lighting was dim, and this "private room" inside the office was furnished like a lounge, with a thick carpet and drawn curtains, making everything as silent as a secret room.
She carefully turned her body and reached for the coat on the ground—thankfully, the stun gun was still there.
The moment she gripped the stun gun tightly, she felt that she had truly grasped a sense of security.
But before she could get up, a low, muffled sound, as if it were coming from a blocked throat, rang out from not far away:
"Waaaaah..."
Shen Mi stopped moving almost instantly, his body frozen beside the sofa.
The sound was hidden at the other end of the room.
She tiptoed closer, avoiding the creaking wooden floorboards at the edges of the carpet, and moved to the cabinet beside the partition, opening the door that almost blended into the wall—
The moment the dim light from the room shone through her body onto the man's face, Shen Mi almost held her breath.
It's Sang Li.
Her hands were tied behind her back, her mouth was covered with thick tape, and she was almost huddled in the corner of the chair. She looked like she had been struggling for a long time, her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes were filled with fear.
Shen Mi stood motionless, not saying a word for a long time.
Tears welled up in Sang Li's eyes quickly. She nodded frantically, making "woo-woo" sounds, wanting her to help her untie the knot quickly.
But Chen Mi did not move.
She slowly took a step back, her eyes becoming calm—
We can't save her now.
Once you speak up or take action, it means you'll be taking a huge risk, dragging your injured body to fight against Kulen, exposing your identity, your schemes, and even completely missing the chance to leave.
Shen Mi closed his eyes, closed the door again, quickly returned to the sofa, and put his coat back on—his movements were extremely gentle.
She gripped the stun gun tightly, pressed her ear against the back of the sofa, and silently counted the time.
Shen Mi called out to the system in his mind: "System! System! Is the ledger still on Kulun's body?"
The system responded promptly, contrary to its usual practice: "Ledger location: 15 meters... 10 meters from host..."
Good, good, so it's still on him. Chen Mi breathed a sigh of relief. It seems he didn't go out to transfer the ledgers.
She forced herself to hold her breath and pretend she was still asleep.
Silence fell back into the room.
In the silence, only the sound of her heartbeat pounded against her nerves, as if it could be heard at any moment.
She heard the footsteps outside getting closer and closer.
Kulen is back.
His heels clicked on the corridor tiles, each step a steady, rhythmic thud. The sound grew closer to the sofa until it stopped right next to her ear.
Shen Mi's every nerve was taut to the extreme, and he dared not even tremble his eyelids.
Kulen seemed to be watching her, his gaze heavy as a thousand pounds.
Shen Mi felt that gaze, like a knife, slowly slid down her cheek. She could almost hear her blood surging in her veins.
He didn't say anything, but turned and walked towards the room where Sang Li was locked up.
"Waaaaah... Waaaaah—!"
The extremely suppressed cry for help rang out again; clearly, she had also heard Kulen's movements.
The door opened, and he went inside.
"What's all the noise about?" Cullen said in a low voice.
Shen Mi quietly turned over, bent over and sat up, her bare feet stepping on the carpet, and silently approached the open door.
Sang Li's voice grew increasingly urgent, carrying an almost frantic plea for help.
Just as Shen Mi approached the door, Kulun suddenly spoke.
"I have said that those who betray me will pay the price."
Shen Mi gripped the stun gun tightly, tucked into her sleeve. Sweat streamed down her palms, soaking the metal casing. She knew that if this strike missed, she would die.
In the secret room, Cullen stood in front of Sangli, who was sitting on a chair, looking down at her.
Do you know what I hate most?
Sang Li shook her head desperately, tears already blurring her eyelashes. The tape over her mouth prevented her from making any meaningful sounds; she could only sob and wail.
“I hate being played. Especially by people like you who overestimate themselves. I’ve known about you and Chloe for a long time. The reason I’m keeping you and him around is because you still have some use to me…”
He pinched Sang Li's face hard, as if he was about to say something.
Just then, Sang Li suddenly widened her eyes, stared intently behind him, shook her head desperately, struggled wildly, and let out a tearing sob.
Kulen frowned and turned around as if sensing something.
—Now!
Shen Mi suddenly leaped up and rushed into the room!
The stun gun flashed blue light, its sharp electric shock shattering the silence!
"Sizzle—!!"
The metal head slammed into Cullen's neck, and a burst of blue light erupted!
In that instant, the electric current penetrated through muscles and nerves!
Kulen's body trembled violently, as if his entire nervous system had lost control, and he let out a low growl that was almost like that of a wild beast!
He tried to turn around and grab her, but his body wouldn't obey him.
His body stiffened, and he collapsed to the ground with a thud!
Shen Mi took a few steps back and watched him fall. The stun gun in her hand was still crackling, but her hand was shaking so badly that she could no longer hold it.
Her heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to explode, and her breathing became rapid, making it hard for her to stand.
The blue light from the stun gun finally went out.
Shen Mi stood frozen in place, his brain buzzing, and the high-frequency shrill sound of that electric shock still seemed to echo in his ears.
Kulen collapsed—his usually calm and icy face lay pressed against the cold floor, his brows furrowed, his eyes closed, motionless.
But Chen Mi couldn't believe that he had just fainted.
She held her breath, staring at the body, observing every few seconds for even the slightest twitch of a muscle or the slightest rise and fall of a breath.
One minute, two minutes... The air was so quiet that even her heartbeat sounded jarring.
"...Is he dead?" she murmured.
Shen Mi's knuckles slowly loosened, only to find that his hand holding the stun gun was numb, his thumb and forefinger were white, and his palm was covered in sweat.
Shen Mi didn't dare to bet; she thought of how the protagonist in a TV series would be in danger again because he didn't finish off the enemy.
We can't take that risk.
Shen Mi gritted his teeth, gripped the stun gun tightly again, and slowly stepped forward, his fingers trembling slightly as he raised it.
Her breathing was so rapid that it was almost uncontrollable, as if the air itself had become heavy and viscous.
The metal head of the stun gun trembled slightly in the air, less than an inch from Cullen's neck.
Did he really faint?
She looked down, so close she could almost see the slowly undulating veins below his carotid artery.
It still breathes.
"Sizzle—!!"
The stun gun emitted another piercing sound, and a flash of blue light appeared!
The electric current repeatedly surged through Cullen's body, causing him to shudder violently, as if his nerves were rapidly restarting and shutting down. His body was overwhelmed, and this time, he finally lost all his strength. His eyes closed completely, and he made no more sound.
She reached out and touched Cullen's neck; there was no heartbeat.
Startled, Shen Mi took two steps back and collapsed onto the edge of the sofa.
The stun gun slipped from his hand, fell to the ground, rolled once, the electric light went out, and the room fell silent again.
"Ha...ha..." She gasped for breath, feeling her internal organs trembling, her heart pounding as if it were about to explode.
Her arm wound was still bleeding, and the hot, damp feeling clung to her skin, but she didn't even have time to care.
The system notified: "Ledger location: 0.8 meters from host."
Oh, right, and the ledgers too.
Shen Mi took a deep breath, trying to pull himself out of the adrenaline rush.
Just to be on the safe side, she first contacted Danheng and told her her current location.
After finishing, Shen Mi held his breath, slowly squatted down, and subconsciously glanced at Sang Li, who was still tied up, out of the corner of his eye.
She remained seated, staring in shock at everything, as if completely bewildered. Her eyes were fixed on Chen Mi, seemingly unable to comprehend that her colleague, who had only recently arrived in District C and remained so composed, had actually... killed Kuren.
Shen Mi had no time to pay attention to her surprise.
She used her knee to push against one of Cullen's shoulders and slowly turned his body over; it was heavy, like death.
Kulen's face turned, half covered in dust, the other half still sharply defined, the muscles at the corners of his mouth twitching and not yet fully relaxed. His eyes were closed, his eyelashes long and black, like someone in a deep sleep.
Shen Mi didn't dare stare at him for too long, and her gaze quickly fell on his chest.
Ledger.
The blue ledger was still clutched tightly in his arms, pressed down by his arm, as if it were something he was unwilling to let go of until the very last moment.
Chen Mi pulled it out with force.
Then a system notification came to my ear.
