Chapter 31 Rescue
This was the first step in their plan. The commandos would launch a surprise attack to rescue the prisoners. They were solely focused on rescuing people, not engaging in a prolonged battle. Once they found someone, they would leave. The Dongyi people had no idea anyone would come to rescue their captives, as there had never been a precedent. The Han people had never attempted to rescue the civilians they had captured.
They were too confident that no one could pass through the miasma, so the commandos caught them off guard. All the captured Han people lived together, and Changjing led them to find the captured prisoners.
The effect of the medicine only lasted for four hours. Lu Chenyang and Yan Xing did not sleep either. After inspecting the troops, they waited for the commandos to return at the edge of the rainforest.
Time passed extremely slowly until a figure appeared.
The first to come out were the captured Han people, and the commandos followed behind to cover their retreat, with pursuers chasing them.
Upon seeing this, Yan Xing immediately led his men in to rush in for support. The Dongyi people didn't expect that there was support outside, so they immediately retreated.
Yan Xing did not pursue him either - the people he brought with him had not taken the antidote!
The Han people were successfully rescued. These people had been captured for many years and never expected that they would be able to return to their hometown one day. They couldn't help but feel sad and burst into tears.
The news of Lu Chenyang rescuing the captured Han people spread throughout Yanquan County in just one day.
The sensation it caused was no less than the news that a top scholar with six top marks in the imperial examination was born.
How many years has it been since the conflict between the Dongyi people and the Han people occurred? It has been hundreds of years in history, and the conflict between the two sides has existed since before the founding of the Daqian State.
No one ever thought of rescuing the Han people who were captured, and none of them ever came back.
Lu Chenyang had only been in office for less than a month, but he had already brought back the captured prisoners, which was simply history!
All the county magistrates and garrison commanders in the past should reflect on why they didn't do it. This task doesn't seem as difficult as imagined.
But everyone knew that this was not easy. This showed two things: first, Lu Chenyang's men had successfully passed through the miasma; second, his men had the ability to rescue people from the Dongyi people's territory. What kind of skill was this?
All forces in Yanquan County are keeping an eye on Lu Chenyang. After keeping a low profile for a month, this newly appointed scholar-county magistrate forcefully displayed his abilities and methods in a way that no one could ignore.
Make it impossible for anyone to look down on him anymore.
Lu Chenyang didn’t care what they thought. The person was rescued, but there were a lot of troubles afterwards.
Some of these people were captured more than ten years ago. When they were rescued, they said that their houses and land had long been divided up by their relatives. This series of troubles needed to be handled by Lu Chenyang, the county magistrate.
Lu Chenyang wiped his face and went to the fields to distribute houses and land to people. He was still making plans the day before, but today he had to argue clearly for every acre and three mu of land.
Lu Chenyang said he could!
After all, compared to Yan Xing's life-and-death battle on the front line, his job is at least safe.
After Lu Chenyang's vanguard rescued the people, the Dongyi people were furious and sent out their troops. Yan Xing was well prepared and led the garrison to resist firmly.
As expected, the Mieyi Army didn't take action, just sitting back and watching the show. But is Yan Xing so easy to deal with? Under his leadership, the garrison is now a completely different place.
The formations the garrison rehearsed were mainly defensive, with ten men forming a squad and three squads forming a team, forming a three-sided defensive formation. Not only did they defend Yanquan County impregnable, but they also suffered very few casualties.
Ten days have passed. The Dongyi people came with great force, but they did not gain any advantage. No soldiers of the garrison were killed, at most they were injured.
This greatly boosted the morale of the garrison and changed their previous image of being useless.
Lu Chenyang was handling official business here, Yan Xing was leading troops to resist the Dongyi people, and Zhao Xi took Chang Jing around the mountains to look for various medicinal herbs.
Everyone has a bright future.
On this day, the Dongyi people retreated to rest, and Lu Chenyang invited everyone to the county government office for dinner. He wanted to reward everyone.
Lu Chenyang personally cooked a meal for everyone. Chang Jing was deeply surprised. An official could actually cook? He had seen that even men, let alone scholars, had never been in the kitchen.
Chang Jing's mother was also rescued, but her family refused to acknowledge them. Lu Chenyang then divided the house and land between them, giving them at least a place to live. Chang Jing's mother was also ill, and Lu Chenyang, thinking of Chang Jing's contribution in leading the way, asked Zhao Xi to help with his mother's medical treatment.
Now his mother is recuperating at home, and she specially asked him to come and thank Lu Chenyang. But Chang Jing didn't expect that Lu Chenyang would actually cook for them.
Changjing seemed to understand a little bit why Zhao Xi, that fierce girl, was so loyal to Lu Chenyang.
Lu Chenyang cooked a table full of food. He didn’t think there was anything shameful about cooking. He used to cook for himself when he was escorting goods outside.
Zhao Xi said, "I'll help you, sir!"
"No need!" Almost immediately, Lu Chenyang refused without hesitation, fearing that Zhao Xi would go into the kitchen if he was a moment late. "No need! I can do it myself." He was extremely firm.
The loyal little maid's face was full of grievance: "Sir, do you dislike me?"
Lu Chenyang touched her head and said, "My Zhaoxi is so capable, isn't it a waste of her talent to go to the kitchen? Be good and just sit and wait for the food."
The little maid was very easy to coax and immediately smiled.
Lu Chenyang breathed a sigh of relief. What Zhao Xi cooked was no different from poisoning him, and he didn't want to eat it at all.
Lu Chenyang picked up his glass and said, "I was able to open up the situation so quickly this time because of all your support. I would like to thank you all very much. I toast to you all."
Chang Jing's face flushed red, and he quickly stood up: "Sir, how can I bear this? You, you helped me rescue my mother, I should be the one thanking you."
Lu Chenyang looked at him and said, "Yes, and you too. Your mother has been rescued now. You must stop stealing and cheating. I will find you a school and you must go there."
Chang Jing was shocked: "Go to school?" Is that something he could think about?
Lu Chenyang said as a matter of course, "I am the first top scholar in the imperial examination to have achieved the sixth place. I cannot rule over all the people who are illiterate! All children of school age must go to school. Although you are a little older, you are smart and clever. I believe you will be able to learn well."
Chang Jing was stunned for a long time. Studying and going to school, things he had never dared to think about in his dreams, were said so easily from Lu Chenyang's mouth.
He looked at him. Lu Chenyang was talking to Yan Xing with a smile on his face, his eyes gentle. He suddenly felt it was real. If it was said by an adult, then it would definitely be done.
Just like when he casually said that he would definitely rescue his mother.
He also curled the corners of his lips and said he would study, take exams in the future, and become a person like adults.
Zhao Xi saw him staring at Lu Chenyang, "What are you looking at?"
Chang Jing's heart was filled with lofty ambitions: "I will study hard to repay you, sir. In the future, I will take the imperial examination and become the top scholar, and become a person like you!"
Zhao Xi leered at him. "You? Like my master? That's a bit tiring. My master has been extremely intelligent since she was young, with a photographic memory and outstanding talent. All the teachers who have taught her say that she is an absolute genius. You are far from it."
Chang Jing's expression froze, and she said in embarrassment, "Sister Zhao Xi, can't you encourage me a little?"
Zhao Xi had no concept of encouraging education at all, so he shrugged his shoulders and ignored him.
Yan Xing drank a glass of wine with Lu Chenyang: "Congratulations, you have won the first battle."
Lu Chenyang drank the glass of wine with him and said, "I also want to thank you, the prince. This time, you should take the first credit."
Yan Xing drank the glass of wine with him with a proud look on his face, and he felt that he deserved it.
Yan Xing said, "Don't be happy too soon. There is not much food left in the army." What they are eating now is what the army has saved by being frugal.
The food supply alone is enough to give Lu Chenyang a headache.
Lu Chenyang sighed and said quietly, "Yes, it's another troublesome matter. But why should I, a mere county magistrate, worry about the garrison's food supply?"
Yan Xing couldn't help but curl his lips and said, "The more capable, the more work. Why don't you talk to Dewey and let him worry about it?"
Lu Chenyang raised his head and said, "Isn't it just food? Who can't get it? I can do it!"
Yan Xing raised his glass: "Lord Lu is very ambitious!" He paused, unable to bear to stand by and watch. "I still have a jade pendant that Zhao Qingwan gave me. Otherwise, you could sell it too."
Lu Chenyang winked nervously: "This is not good, it's a gift from a girl."
Yan Xing had no expression on his face: "Do you want it?"
Lu Chenyang smiled and said, "It hasn't come to that yet. Miss Zhao's jade pendant will remain with you for now." After a pause, he attentively poured a glass of wine for Yan Xing and said, "But there is one thing I need your help with, my Lord."
Yan Xing looked at his meaningful smile and inexplicably had a feeling that someone was about to get into trouble. But it shouldn't be him, right?
The next day, Yan Xing led two squads of garrison troops into a grain store owned by the Shen family.
