Yan Zheng bit his lip and turned to the window. The wind blew his short hair and his heart into the air. This woman, Sang Tianen, was truly... unbelievable.
"Why aren't you talking again?" Sang Tianen spoke again.
Yan Zheng didn't answer her, but just looked at the scenery outside the car. The evening breeze took away the dryness of the day, and the coolness penetrated every pore. He couldn't help but close his eyes and take a deep breath.
Sang Tianen thought he didn't like talking while in the car, so he reached out and turned on the car radio. The radio station was playing a song, and a low and hoarse male voice flowed out -
I stand under the night sky,
Looking at the sky full of shining stars,
Just waiting for a star to fall from the distant sky to the earth,
I clasp my hands together and pray sincerely,
Stars, please give me the strength to move forward.
I am too tired, like a traveler dying of thirst in the desert,
…
The old tune was like the continuous rain, filling the carriage with dampness, and those chilly memories were turning over page by page in my mind.
Sang Tianen's jawline tightened in an instant, and his knuckles gripping the steering wheel turned white.
"Ruonan, just treat it as a plea from your mother, okay?" The woman knelt on the ground with tears streaming down her face. "Just get married. Xiao Chen will treat you well. Don't you like studying? Xiao Chen said that if you marry him, he will provide for you."
The girl looked at her mother in disbelief, her face turning pale. "Mom, he's already thirty."
"It's good to be old. He knows how to be caring." The woman wiped her tears and stood up. "He's a local and has many houses. As long as you are willing to marry him, our family will have no worries about life."
The girl's eyes suddenly turned red, and she said in a choked voice, "Mom, I'm only seventeen."
"Xiao Chen said we'll wait until you're an adult before getting the marriage certificate and holding the wedding banquet." The woman quickly took out her phone. "Look, this is the new phone Xiao Chen bought me. How much do you make as a tutor? Can you afford such an expensive phone for Mom?"
The girl's eyes fell on the brand new cell phone, her eyes revealed an unprecedented sadness and despair, and her hands clenched into fists.
"He said he would help Yaoguang and Xiaofeng transfer to a good school. Their current school isn't good at all," the woman said to herself, holding up three skinny fingers. "Xiao Chen also said he was willing to give our family a betrothal gift of 300,000 yuan."
When talking about the 300,000 yuan betrothal gift, the woman's face blossomed with an unprecedented glow, and her eyes were so bright that they almost illuminated the entire dark and damp basement.
"Mom," the girl swallowed and said in a hoarse voice, "I've applied to a university abroad. They're willing to give me a full scholarship. Once I get there, I can work and earn money to support you and your brothers."
"Shut up!" The woman's expression suddenly changed, her features almost squeezed together, and her slightly cloudy eyes spewed out a strong hatred. "You think I don't know what you're thinking? You want to go abroad and leave us behind to live a good life? I tell you, you're daydreaming."
As she spoke, the woman grabbed the girl's ponytail and pulled it viciously, as if she wanted to pull her scalp off.
The girl gritted her teeth, and blood began to flow out of her numb chest again.
"Xia Ruonan, you've ruined me for half my life, and now that you've grown wings, you want to run away. Are you still a human being?"
The woman started crying again as she spoke. "If it weren't for you, how could Brother Tao die, and how could I have suffered so much? It's you, a bitch, who made me become like this, and now you want to run away?"
"Squeak--" With a sudden recoil, Sang Tianen stepped on the brakes, and Yan Zheng, who was still a little drowsy, was awakened.
"What happened?" He subconsciously looked forward, thinking that something had happened, but the front was empty, there was nothing. He turned his gaze to Sang Tianen next to him.
Sang Tianen turned off the radio with a pale face. The disturbing tone finally disappeared. She put her hands on the steering wheel, lowered her head, and fell into a kind of dead silence.
Yan Zheng tugged at her sleeve suspiciously, as if afraid to disturb her, and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong with you?"
Sang Tianen took a deep breath, raised his head and gave Yan Zheng a comforting smile: "Sorry, I was a little uncomfortable just now. I hope I didn't scare you."
She was smiling, but Yan Zheng felt like she was crying. Yan Zheng frowned and asked, "How about we go to the hospital?"
"I'm really fine. I just felt a little nervous just now. I have a little hypoglycemia, which happens when I'm hungry." Sang Tianen made up an excuse, stepped on the accelerator with his right foot, and the car started slowly.
Yan Zheng still looked worried. Just now, Sang Tianen exuded an indescribable aura, like a piece of porcelain that was about to break at any time, filled with despair and fragility.
He didn't know why he suddenly became like this. Sang Tianen had always given him the impression of being cheerful and generous, always smiling, and had never shown such a gloomy side.
"How about I drive?" Yan Zheng said tentatively, trying his best to show his kindness and concern within the appropriate boundaries.
"It seems I really scared you." Sang Tianen smiled with a hint of bitterness, "Don't worry, I was in good health during my last physical examination."
"But you look very bad."
"I'm so hungry! I'm almost starving." Sang Tianen glanced at the navigation and said, "We'll be there in ten minutes. This restaurant is by the Siyue River. We can enjoy the seafood while watching the scenery."
Yan Zheng knew that she was trying to change the subject, and stopped asking about what had just happened. Moderate concern can make a woman feel good, but excessive concern will make people feel nagging.
