Chapter 10: A Wasteful Thing

That day, Grandma Wu took Jane Ning away. Later, she told Jane Ning herself that the reason she adopted Jane Ning and took her as her disciple was because she saw that Jane Ning did not cry or make a fuss after being abandoned by her parents, and was extremely calm. It can be seen that her mind has been tempered to a certain extent. Such a person has a strong will and can deal with her temper.

Grandma Wu taught Jane Ning all her skills and gave her a portable herb medicine box. Because of this, Jane Ning was later recruited into the special police force and became a special police officer and military doctor.

"Mom." After coming down from the mountain, as soon as Jian Ning entered the yard, the big girl told her, "Aunt Tian asked Xiaomai and Xiaodou to bring some hay. She said there was something going on at the government office and Xiaodou's father was called away."

"Okay, Mom got it. Your dad found a dead rabbit in the mountains. We'll roast the rabbit meat tonight and give the remaining half to Aunt Tian's family. You and Dabao can go and deliver it together."

When they heard that there was rabbit meat to eat, the eldest girl immediately put her ear close to the third girl's left ear and told her the good news loudly. The four little ones were very happy.

Their grandparents’ house only had meat once a month, but they didn’t get a share. Usually they only saw meat in Ding Gui and Ding Quan’s bowls, and they could only taste the meat during the Chinese New Year.

Jian Ning was preparing the rabbit meat. Erniu and Sanniu stood around watching with their eyes wide open. Especially Erniu, she was smacking her lips and drooling at the raw rabbit meat.

Seeing his child happy, Ding Youtian worked with extra enthusiasm. By the time Jian Ning finished cleaning the rabbit meat, he had already woven two pieces of straw. Jian Ning saw that he was quite skilled and not completely useless, so he was considered to be of some use.

The special police unit that Jane Ning served in her previous life was stationed on the border. The local villagers liked to weave various handicrafts with wheat straw. Because of her personal interest, she learned from the fellow villagers, but she had never weaved straw straw before. However, she learned it after watching Ding Youtian weave for a while.

Ding Youtian wondered, "His wife used to be able to weave straw mats, so why did she need to watch him do it first?" But he was soon relieved, because Jian Ning got the hang of it, and she got faster and faster. Perhaps for those who have lost their memory, their memories before the loss are more profound.

So, his husband has become a stranger?

His eyes dimmed. His wife still loved their children as always. That was the natural bond between mother and child. What should he do as her husband?

"Mom!" Da Niu's voice was heard outside the yard. She and Da Bao had brought back rabbit meat, and Ma Xiaomai, the eldest of the Tian family, was with them.

"Brother Xiaomai is here." She told Jian Ning after entering the yard, "Aunt Tian asked him to bring a ladder and some rabbit meat. Aunt Tian refused to accept it and asked my parents to exchange it for money."

Tian thought they would need a ladder to renovate the roof, and was afraid they didn't have one, so she asked Ma Xiaomai to deliver one, and also packed a bag of seasonings such as ginger, onion, garlic, etc. for cooking.

Ma Xiaomai is the leader of the children in Dingjia Village. His father is a constable who knows some martial arts, and his uncle is a bodyguard from the Jinmen County Escort Bureau. Those sweet potatoes were brought by his uncle. Ma Xiaomai has learned some martial arts from his father and uncle since he was a child. When it comes to fighting, the children in the village are no match for him.

But Ma Xiaomai never bullies the weak and loves to stand up for the weak. He has punished Ding Gui for bullying others. Meng even came to his house for this, but was chased away by the Ma Constable who was protecting his calf.

Ma Xiaomai put down the ladder after entering the yard. She glanced at the bamboo basket of rabbit meat that Da Niu had placed at Jian Ning's feet and said in a muffled voice, "Aunt Jian, my mother thanked you and told you to take it to town to exchange for money. She said we'll have plenty of money to spend in the future."

In fact, Ding Youtian thought so at the beginning. Such a fat rabbit could be exchanged for some money to buy some food. However, before he could express his thoughts, his wife made the decision.

Now that he thinks about it, his wife doesn't seem to be able to manage the household. However, he only said this to himself in his heart and didn't have the courage to tell his wife.

Jane Ning was weaving straw mats, her hands busy. She glanced at Ma Xiaomai from the bamboo basket and said, "Take it back and tell your mother that if she wants to return it, I'll also return the sweet potatoes she gave me. I won't need your ladder anymore, and take the bag of seasoning back too."

"Okay!" Ma Xiaomai smiled and didn't even need the bamboo basket. He peeled off the leaves covering the rabbit meat, picked up half of the rabbit and ran away.

As he ran, he turned back and shouted: "I'll come back later. I can also help you build the roof."

On the way, a villager saw him happily carrying half a rabbit and asked where it came from. He loudly told them that Uncle Ding had found a dead rabbit in the mountains and gave his family half as a snack.

This news soon reached Mrs. Meng's ears. What a waste of two rabbits! She felt so heartbroken as if her own flesh and blood had been ripped out. She was so angry that she slammed the table and cursed at home: "You black-hearted rotten livers! Instead of thinking about honoring your parents and giving a small treat to your nephews at home, you use the money to honor others. God bless you with five thunders and you will die a miserable death!"

She scolded them for half an hour at home.

Liu and Gao were also very angry. They were angry that the fourth son had such good luck after being separated, and they were angry that he didn't think of sending rabbit meat to them. Even if they couldn't eat it, it would be good to just look at it. What made them even angrier was that without the fourth son as a burden, they were even more tired.

All the work that was originally supposed to be done by Jian now fell on their shoulders. When Jian was around, they could still hide away and have some free time. How could they have done the dirty work? The thought of being exhausted and not having a good meal at night, while Jian would be able to eat delicious rabbit meat tonight, made them almost angry. They went in and out without realizing it, and they were throwing things and hitting each other.

Mrs. Meng, already furious, jumped up and punched each of them, cursing, "Do you want to get out too? Go back to that shabby house and see if winter doesn't freeze you to death! If it doesn't, you'll starve to death! Do you think you can pick up rabbits every day? You short-sighted bastards, you'll feel uncomfortable if you don't get scolded every day!"

The two of them thought that this was right. When winter came, the house would leak wind on all sides. Even if the fourth brother's family could survive the winter, they had no land and would starve to death sooner or later after they had eaten all the food they were given.
