"You, think clearly, I am not your wife."
"I know." He pinched her chin, "Jian Ning, I know you are not Xiu Gu. I know very well that I don't treat you as Xiu Gu."
He rubbed his thumb gently along her chin.
"Then, you, do you still miss her?" Jane Ning heard her own dry voice ringing in her ears.
"Yes. Xiu Gu will always live in my heart. I promise you that in this life, there will only be you and Xiu Gu in my heart. Apart from you, there will never be room for any other woman in the world."
"You, do you believe me?"
"I, I don't know."
Jane Ning really didn't know. She wasn't sure whether he was truly in love with her or just doing it out of physical needs.
Likewise, she wasn't sure of her own feelings.
She thought they both needed time to sort this out. In her previous life, she had lived a life of gunfire and killing, and in this life, she just wanted to live a stable life. If the two of them were together just because of need, it was inevitable that they would separate in the future.

After thinking for a moment, she looked at him and said, "Marriage is a lifelong commitment. We are monogamous, so I cannot accept you taking a concubine. Also, I am not sure about my feelings for you, and perhaps you are not clear either. I think we both need time to figure out our feelings for each other."
His body stiffened and his fingers froze.
After a while, he said in a hoarse voice: "I know what I mean, but I am willing to give you time. How long do you need to think this through?"
Jian Ning lowered her eyes and pondered for a moment, then suddenly looked up at him and smiled, "In my previous life, I once heard a line from a costume drama that said, for men in ancient times, the greatest joy in life was to pass the imperial examination and have a wedding night."
"Okay, you promise me a place on the imperial examination and a wedding night. I promise you that I will be alone with you for half my life."
Jane Ning extended her pinky finger: "Pink."
He smiled and hooked his fingers around hers, whispering in her ear, "There's still a next life."
