When Madam Li saw Jian Ning carrying her medicine box, she pulled her along and walked away, saying, "I don't know what happened to Sister Yu. Less than half an hour after she went to bed, she suddenly burst into tears and couldn't be comforted. I had no choice, so the young lady sent me to ask you to go check on her. I'm so sorry for disturbing you and your family in the middle of the night!"
"Mom, please stop saying that. You and I are not strangers." Jian Ning hadn't heard her mention that Xiaoyuer was feeling unwell. She and Aunt Feng were both experienced in taking care of children, so they didn't mention that it meant the crying was unexplained. They were afraid that it was most likely a sudden emergency.
"I'll go over and take a look first." Jane Ning was so frightened by Xiao Yuer's crying that she left Mother Li and quickly went to the house where Mei Niang lived.
"Sister!" Seeing her coming, Mei Niang rushed over, holding the howling little Yu'er. "Look, what's wrong with Sister Yu? She can't pee, isn't hungry, and doesn't have a fever. I don't know why she's crying so hard. I'm so worried!"
"Don't be anxious, let me take a look." Jian Ning reached out to hug Xiao Yuer, but she cried and shook her hands, lying on her back and howling at the top of her lungs.
Jian Ning wanted to take her pulse, but her whole body was resisting and she didn't want anyone else except Mei Niang. Aunt Feng was so anxious that tears were streaming down her face, and Mei Niang was so heartbroken that tears were welling up in her eyes.
"It's okay. Children can improve their lung capacity by crying appropriately. Sisters, don't feel bad. I will force myself to take her pulse to see where she is feeling uncomfortable." Jian Ning put down the medicine box and Mei Niang held back her tears and grabbed Xiao Yuer's hand and handed it to her.
Xiao Yu'er's right wrist was held by Jian Ning, and she cried even harder, as if she had used up all her strength to cry! Mei Niang could no longer hold back, and her tears fell like beads from a broken string.
"Okay, okay, don't cry, don't cry. Auntie is so mean. Auntie shouldn't hold our little Yu'er's hand so tightly." Jian Ning patted her back and coaxed her. Then he shook his head at Mei Niang, "I'm not feeling uncomfortable at all."
"Could it be that he's been possessed by an evil spirit?" Aunt Feng asked, wiping her tears. She still held Old Qin's large underpants in her hand. "I tried holding the underpants upside down, but it didn't work. If he's been possessed by an evil spirit, is there anything else we can do?"
"Mom, how could we be possessed here in the government office?" Mei Niang was worried that Aunt Feng's words would upset Jian Ning, so she looked at her guiltily.
Jian Ning didn't mind. Xiao Yu'er didn't feel unwell anywhere, and that could be diagnosed by taking his pulse. "I can't rule out the possibility of him being possessed by evil spirits. I'll go..."
Before she could finish her words, Old Qin came over, covered in clothes. Hearing her say she was possessed by evil spirits, he hurriedly said, "I'll ask Brother Liu to come and take a look."
Jane Ning also meant this, "I'll go call."
Before she even stepped out of the house, Ding Youtian and Blind Liu had already arrived, followed by Guoguo and Baimei.
As soon as they entered the house, Guoguo hunched his back and stood up immediately, his eyes wide open, staring at Xiaoyuer in Mei Niang's arms in confusion.
At the moment when Baimei arched its back, it flapped its wings and flew onto Jian Ning's shoulder.
It landed a little too hastily and lost its balance, flapping its wings a few times before it finally found its balance.
"Uncle Liu." Jian Ning stroked his white eyebrows with his backhand, "I've checked Xiaoyu'er's pulse. He's not feeling unwell, and he's not hungry or urinating. I don't know why he just won't stop crying."
Blind Liu nodded and waved his hand to signal Jian Ning to move aside. He raised his eyes and squinted slightly at the still crying Xiao Yuer, "I'll go back and change my clothes and come back later. It's okay."
"Go look after little Jiuer, don't let her get woken up, she'll start crying soon." Old Qin asked Aunt Feng to look after little Jiuer, but Aunt Feng rolled her eyes at him, saying, "Say something nice, you old man! The wet nurse is watching her."
Guoguo tugged at the hem of Ding Youtian's robe, and the moment he lowered his eyes, she jumped into his arms, staring at Xiaoyuer intently.
Baimei was the same, his little eyes didn't even blink.
When Blind Liu came back, he had changed into the clothes he used to wear when reading people's bones and fortunes, and he also brought Pingjinfan. He asked Mei Niang to hold Xiao Yuer and sit on the chair, and waved his hand for everyone else to step back. Then he waved Pingjinfan, his lips moving rapidly, and he couldn't tell what he was muttering to himself.
Miraculously, after he waved the Pingjin sail, Xiaoyuer's crying gradually weakened, and finally stopped. He snuggled in Mei Niang's arms and fell asleep, with a teardrop as big as a bucket hanging on his right eyelash.
"Brother..." Old Qin grabbed Blind Liu's arm with both hands and patted it vigorously, saying, "You are truly an amazing person! Thank you, thank you very much!"
"Uncle Liu." Mei Niang stood up, holding Xiaoyu'er in her arms, and bowed to him. "What happened to Sister Yu? She's never cried for no reason like this since she was born. How could she have attracted such an evil spirit?"
Blind Liu stroked his beard and smiled, "Relax, there will be no evil spirits where the old blind man is. The old blind man also said long ago that your two children are both auspicious for their parents. Good fortunes are yet to come for your family."
"Then why are you crying so much?" asked Aunt Feng.
Blind Liu chuckled. "Crying for no reason is probably just reminiscing about your past life. It's nothing to worry about. Your past life is over. Don't worry."
Guoguo jumped out of Ding Youtian's arms with a "whoosh", and Baimei immediately flew onto its back. It walked away proudly with Baimei on its back at a steady pace.
"Master." Coming out of the guest room and turning through a corridor, Ding Youtian chased after Blind Liu and asked, "You can't see the souls of reincarnated people in their previous lives, right? Was Xiaoyu'er Lu Huaian's wife in her previous life?"
Blind Liu stopped, slamming the Pingjin sail in his hand to the ground. He squinted at him and said, "Do you think an old blind man like you has such extraordinary abilities? I just made up a few random words and chanted a few clearing mantras to lull her to sleep."
"So, bone-touching and fortune-telling are all just lies and nonsense?"
"Hmph!" Blind Liu raised Pingjinfan and slammed it against his feet. Fortunately, he dodged quickly. "If you have the ability, why don't you just lie and see if anyone will believe you?"
With a flick of his long sleeves, he pulled up the Pingjin sail and strode away.
"Serves you right! You're not allowed to talk too much." Jian Ning hung the medicine box on his shoulder, put his hands behind his back, and strode forward.
Jian Ning turned around and saw that the lights in Duan Xinyan, Erniu, and Sanniu's rooms were all on. She heard the noises of her and Chun'er getting up. She knocked on the window and said softly, "It's okay, go to sleep."
"Master, are you okay?" Qiao Feng asked, pushing the window open.
"Be careful not to catch a cold. It's okay now, go to sleep." Jian Ning went back to her room to wash her hands. Ding Youtian pushed the door open and came in, followed by Guoguo and Baimei.
They entered the house and went straight to the brazier, each finding a place to lie down.
"Go to bed early and don't stay up too late." Jian Ning said, glancing at the book on the table and casually picking it up to flip through it. "Hey, haven't you read this military book before? Why are you reading it again?"
"I'm happy to do that. You go to sleep. I'll be asleep soon."
"Diligence can make up for lack of talent. Work hard." Jian Ning threw the book into his arms and patted him on the shoulder.
"The saying 'diligence can make up for lack of talent' is even more applicable to my wife, but as your husband, I wish to encourage you as well."
Jian Ning snorted lightly, walked into the inner room and went to sleep.
After she fell asleep, she heard a "ding" sound in a daze. She opened her eyes and saw that the light in the outer room was still on. She yawned and looked at the electronic screen.
When she saw it, she called out "husband" and turned over and sat up.
