Chapter 57 Harvesting Grain

Unexpectedly, just that one sentence triggered Mao Dan's anger, and he jumped up and shouted, "Impossible! Absolutely impossible! He would never lie to me! We're good friends!"

Xie Yan quickly pulled the jumping-up Mao Dan back, soothing him, "Alright, alright, I know you two are good friends, don't be anxious. Your uncle hasn't finished speaking yet."

"I'll just ask you one question: do you think I'm the one who would lie, or... or is it Yu Dahui?"

Mao Dan thought for a moment, "That must be because you're not in the same place, that's why you see different things! Yes, let's try it!"

Xie Yan sighed. Could it be that he simply couldn't believe his friend would lie to him?

"So, do you think the capital is better, or our county town?"

Without hesitation, Mao Dan replied, "Of course, Beijing is better! It's the capital!"

"That's right! You know the capital is better, but think about it, there are many unemployed people in the capital, so how could there be no one like you in our county?"

"Yes!" Mao Dan scratched his ear. "Uncle-in-law is right! Could it be that Yu Dahui really lied to him? But why? Why would he lie to him? He trusted Dahui so much!"

Thinking of this, Mao Dan's face fell, his eyes became misty, and he looked like he was about to cry!

This startled Xie Yan. "Oh?! My goodness, please don't cry! My little darling, if your parents come back and see this, they'll think I've bullied you! I'm so innocent!"

It would have been better if he hadn't said anything, because once he did, Mao Dan couldn't hold back anymore, and tears streamed down his face like a broken string of pearls. Xie Yan quickly stepped forward and hugged him, "Oh dear, our Mao Dan is a real man, how can he cry like that?"

But Mao Dan, whose defenses had been breached by friendship, cared about nothing else but heartbreak.

Xie Yan was at a loss. Why couldn't she appease him? She should have known better than to say anything more. What a jerk she was!

There was really no other way, so Xie Yan could only watch Mao Dan cry, already thinking of countless ways to respond to his parents and family.

Finally, Mao Dan's sobs subsided, and he began to complain to Xie Yan in broken sentences, "How could he lie to me? I've been so good to him! I believed everything he said, and... he even told Gou Dan! Now all the kids in the village think the city is like he described, waaaaaah..."

At this point, Mao Dan became sad again. How could he ever face the village again? What if others knew the truth and thought he was a liar too?

It wasn't his fault at all! Waaaaaah!

After listening to his tearful account, Xie Yan was both amused and exasperated, finally understanding why he was crying so bitterly. "Oh dear! Well, there's still room for redress. Do you want to know?"

Mao Dan's nose was red from crying, and tears still clung to his face. He asked in a daze, "Really? Can it really be fixed?"

Xie Yan nodded affirmatively, "Of course! Think about it! You learned about this from Yu Dahui, right? So all you need to do is tell everyone the truth you know now!"

The truth is: "The city isn't as good as everyone says. Of course, it's definitely much better than where we are, so it's understandable to yearn for city life, but we shouldn't excessively praise the city and say the countryside is bad!"

Mao Dan nodded, and was about to say something when, just then, lightning flashed and thunder roared outside, and it started pouring down.

Xie Yan looked outside and saw that it was pouring rain. Raindrops were even jumping onto the steps under the eaves. Seeing such heavy rain, he suddenly became nervous. He wondered if the wheat harvest was finished. If it wasn't finished, it would definitely be soaked.

With such heavy rain, none of them brought umbrellas; they're definitely going to get soaked!

Speaking of drenched chicken, Xie Yan's thoughts immediately drifted away. He wanted to eat chicken, and he thought of the wild pheasants at home. Tsk tsk, wild pheasant meat seems to taste better than the chickens we raise! He was craving it!

The thunderous roar interrupted Xie Yan's thoughts, and the dazzling lightning stung his eyes. He quickly ran back into the house, where he saw Mao Dan, who was covering his ears in fright, squatting pitifully on the ground.

Xie Yan felt guilty seeing this. Sigh! How could he forget that children are afraid of thunder? This little brat is usually naughty and mischievous, but I never expected him to be so timid.

Xie Yan went over and hugged Mao Dan'er, covering his ears with his big hands, and comforted him, "It's okay, it's okay, don't be afraid. As long as we stay at home and don't go out during thunderstorms, we'll be fine."

As the two were talking, they heard voices outside. Xie Yan looked up and saw several people running back in the pouring rain. Xie Yan immediately spotted Yu Yuehui, who was soaked to the bone, with raindrops dripping from her bangs. Xie Yan quickly put down Maodan from his arms and handed her a towel. "Quickly dry yourself off. Why didn't you bring an umbrella when you went over there? Have you finished harvesting the wheat at the threshing ground?"

Yu Yue wiped the water off her face haphazardly and started drying her hair. "Luckily, we had a lot of people and we were able to collect everything in time. We were all sorted out, so we were quite fortunate! We had just put the last bag of wheat into the warehouse when it started raining heavily."

"Yes! It was collected in time." Yu Shan took off his outer clothes, took the towel Qian Hong handed him, and said while drying himself off.

He had just finished wiping his face when his son splashed water all over him. Turning around, he saw Yu Yuehua frantically shaking her head. After shaking her head, Yu Yuehua touched her face and said, "Washing like that is so much trouble! Just shaking your head is enough!"

Yu Yue rolled her eyes in exasperation, "Guess why we're not going to talk to you?"

Before Yu Yuehua could say anything, he was greeted with a loving caress from his father, followed by a loud slap!

Yu Yuehua looked at her father in surprise, not understanding why he hit her. She was such a grown-up, yet he was hitting her in front of her brother-in-law!

Seeing the captain's hand twitching with desire, he really wanted to give that silly son another slap!

Liu Lanlan was laughing beside her, and was just about to secretly tell her husband why he had been beaten, when she heard her mother-in-law shout loudly: "All of you, hurry back to your rooms and change your clothes. What are you doing standing here? Don't catch a cold and then I'll have to take care of you."

Turning to Yuehui, he said, "Yuehui, put on my clothes first. Quickly change out of your wet clothes. You're a girl, don't you know any manners?"

Qian Hong was extremely disappointed in her daughter. "You're a girl, newly married, with your husband right there, and you're standing under the eaves in those wet clothes. Don't you feel ashamed at all?"

Seeing the unfriendly look in his mother-in-law's eyes at his daughter-in-law, Xie Yan quickly took Yu Yue, who was about to say something, and went back to her room.
