Not long after Mao Dan left, he sent all his group of children home, then turned a corner and sneaked back. As soon as he entered the house, he saw everyone busy with their own things, and no one was paying attention to him. He toddled off to the kitchen with his short legs.
When Yu Yue saw Mao Dan, she quickly wiped the water off her hands, took a steamed bun from her pocket, broke it open, put some cold dishes inside, and handed it to Mao Dan, saying, "Mao Dan, come here and sit down to eat." Seeing that he had returned alone, she smiled and asked, "Where are your friends?"
Mao Dan looked at the steamed bun handed to him, his eyes narrowing into slits as he smiled, revealing a set of big white teeth. He said, "They've all gone home!" With that, he happily took the bun, took a big bite, and exclaimed in his heart: Delicious! It's so delicious! But instantly, he felt sorry for all the steamed buns his friends had eaten. So many plump, white buns, just eaten like that! They were big, white steamed buns!
It wasn't a mixed flour steamed bun; it was truly heartbreaking. He secretly resolved never to bring them to his aunt's house again.
Seeing that Mao Dan was eating too quickly, Yu Yue was afraid that he would choke, so she quickly poured a glass of water, placed it in front of him, and said, "Mao Dan, the water is here for you, remember to drink it!" Mao Dan shook his head without looking up, thinking to himself: I'm not thirsty, why should I drink water?
Why would he go drink water when there are such delicious steamed buns to eat? No way, he's not stupid.
Liu Lanlan caught a glimpse of Yu Yuehui serving her son some cold dishes out of the corner of her eye, and she was slightly satisfied. She secretly pursed her lips, thinking: Yu Yuehui does have some conscience, she knows to make some cold dishes for Maodan, humph! Maodan's repeated calls of "little aunt" were not in vain.
She glanced at the man still washing dishes outside, frowned in anger, and couldn't help but snort, muttering to herself: "That stubborn man, all he knows is to work, work, work!"
What's wrong with washing the dishes after eating the steamed buns? She's so clueless, she doesn't even know to come to the kitchen and lend a hand. Couldn't she just hand me the steamed buns then?
This month too, that's her own brother, and he didn't even give her a couple of steamed buns. He treats Gu Bin, an outsider, better than her own brother! Such an ungrateful sister, and Yuehua, who isn't very bright, always sides with her.
She had always thought of them, father and son, but she hadn't received a single good thing in return! The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, and Liu Lanlan unconsciously increased the force with which she chopped the vegetables.
This startled Qian Hong, who was quietly boiling water nearby. Qian Hong turned around and yelled, "Are you trying to kill me! If you don't want to chop vegetables, put it down, I'll do it! What's the point of the chopping board? If you break it, can you get a new one?"
Upon hearing this, Liu Lanlan immediately lowered her head and looked at Qian Hong with a wronged expression. "Mom, I just accidentally used too much force. It's not as exaggerated as you're making it out to be!"
Seeing this, Yu Yuehui, who was cutting meat nearby, sighed helplessly and quickly said with a smile before her mother could speak, "It's good that you're alright, sister-in-law. Be careful, I just sharpened this knife this morning, it's especially sharp!" She wasn't exaggerating at all; she had indeed sharpened it that morning specifically for cutting vegetables today, and the knife was so sharp that it could cut a hair with a breath.
Liu Lanlan was startled by these words. She knew that Yu Yuehui's knife sharpening technique was exceptionally fast; how could she have missed it?
Could it be that Yu Yuehui was lying to her? Looking at Yu Yuehui's smiling face, Liu Lanlan became even more convinced that Yu Yuehui was lying to her.
With a skeptical attitude, Liu Lanlan cautiously moved the dish aside a little, intending to check it out and embarrass Yu Yuehui and her mother-in-law. What she saw startled her: a deep knife mark on the cutting board.
Liu Lanlan panicked and quickly moved the dishes forward to cover the knife marks. She glanced at Yu Yuehui and Qian Hong, and only breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that the two of them had not noticed her actions.
Turning to Yu Yuehui, he said somewhat perfunctorily, "I know, I know! I'll be careful, after all, everyone knows you sharpen your kitchen knife too much."
Yu Yue glanced back at her but said nothing. She had seen everything Liu Lanlan had done. Today was her special day, and she didn't want to get angry over such a small matter, so she ignored her.
Qian Hong was quite surprised to see this. She glanced at Yu Yuehui and thought her daughter had become quite capable, even scaring people. She never considered that Yu Yuehui was telling the truth. After all, Yu Yuehui's expression didn't seem like she was telling the truth at all.
Yu Yue glanced outside; the plate of steamed buns she had taken out that morning had been completely eaten. She then looked at her two older brothers, who were almost finished washing the dishes, and went out to bring the empty plates back inside. She placed another plate of steamed buns on the table and said, "Big brother, second brother, have some steamed buns to tide you over after you finish washing. Breakfast will probably be a little late today."
In winter, everyone has more free time, and people in Xiliu Village usually eat breakfast early, around 10 a.m. But today, breakfast definitely won't be ready by 10 a.m.
Yu Yuehe was about to say no, since none of them had eaten anything that morning!
But when he looked up, a sea of white came into view. There, round, plump white steamed buns were steaming hot, seemingly radiating a deadly temptation. His gaze was instantly captivated; his eyes widened, his throat bobbed involuntarily as he swallowed, and he couldn't tear his eyes away from the buns.
Compared to Yu Yuehe, Yu Yuehua was much more reserved. Even though she was also incredibly craving it, she maintained a calm expression, befitting her status as the eldest brother.
Yu Yuehui also noticed her second brother's greedy look and said with a smile, "Second brother, don't just look, hurry up and wash it, then you can eat it."
A simple, honest smile appeared on Yu Yuehe's face. He nodded emphatically, and his hands moved faster instantly. This speeding up caused immediate trouble; the water splashed up while washing the dishes landed directly on Yu Yuehua's pants.
Yu Yuehua glanced at the water on her pants, then looked at Yu Yuehe, who was still oblivious to her stupid expression. She was furious and smacked Yu Yuehe on the head.
Under Yu Yuehe's resentful gaze, Yu Yuehua pointed to her pants and said, "Look at yourself! Are you tired of living?! This is my only pair of cotton pants. What am I supposed to wear if you get them wet? Why are you going to lick them dry?"
Yu Yuehe looked down and saw that a large patch of his pants was wet. He quickly covered his head with his arm and whispered, "I'm so sorry, brother. How about I wash these dishes? You can go over there and eat some steamed buns and warm yourself by the fire. Don't even mention licking them dry. If I could lick them dry, that would be amazing!"
