Chapter 277 Fish in the Trench

"Ah Wan, how's the harvest on your side?"

Fu Ming and Fu Liang finished picking all the abalone over there and ran over to check on Fu Wan's harvest.

He originally wanted to show off his large bucket of abalone, but he was unexpectedly heartbroken by the crabs in Fu Wan and the other person's bucket.

"Did you catch all these crabs?"

Fu Ming was somewhat incredulous; he had thought Fu Wan was taking Qin Anning to collect seashells!

"Of course, if we didn't catch it, would it have run into the bucket by itself?"

"Ah Wan, there are even red-armored crabs here?"

Fu Liang immediately spotted several different crabs. Fu Wan nodded, and he perked up again.

“These crabs are quite big, Amin, let’s look for them too!”

"Great, maybe we can find an even bigger crab!"

The two brothers, carrying buckets and tools, began searching among the reefs, while Fu Wan led Qin Anning towards the nearby trench.

"Ah Wan, are we not going to catch crabs anymore?"

Qin Anning was a little puzzled. Catching crabs seemed like a lot of fun, and the crabs that Ye Xiaocui and the others made at noon were also very delicious.

"Let's stop catching crabs and see if there are any fish in the trench."

"What? There are fish in the trench?"

Qin Anning felt as if a new world had been opened to her. Fu Wan put down the shovel and pliers in her hands, and then took out a small net bag from the snakeskin bag next to her.

She only just realized that they had forgotten to bring their netting with them today!

Fortunately, I brought a net bag, so I could at least make a handheld net!

Fu Wan was amused by the image of a hand-held net in her mind, so she took the net and waded along the trench.

Although Qin Anning couldn't understand Fu Wan's actions, she patiently waited without making a sound, afraid that her voice would disturb Fu Wan's operation.

However, her silence did not last long. Just as the net in Fu Wan's hand was halfway through the water, a wave suddenly splashed up in the seawater behind the net, indicating that some fish had already been trapped in the net.

"My God, there really are fish!"

Qin Mingzhu gasped inwardly. Fu Wan was quick, and the trench she was working on wasn't very big. In just a few minutes, her thorough search was over.

Fu Wan picked up the net in her hand and then washed the mud and sand off the bottom of the net in the trench.

When she picked it up again, she could see the fish inside very clearly.

It's a golden drum fish the size of an adult's palm!

Oh, and there's a pufferfish that's already fuming!

"Huh, is that a pufferfish?"

Qin Anning didn't recognize other fish, but she did recognize pufferfish.

"Ah Wan, this fish is poisonous, you can't eat it!"

Fu Wan nodded, "I know!"

She took the pufferfish out of the net bag. Because she was wearing gloves, the unfamiliar touch of the gloves made the pufferfish, which was about to deflate, puff up into a ball again.

"This pufferfish is actually edible; the only poisonous parts are its liver, blood, and roe."

"However, because they are troublesome to process, we usually release such small pufferfish as soon as we catch them."

After saying that, she held the pufferfish up to Qin Anning, gesturing for her to take a look.

"Would you like to try it? It actually feels really good."

When threatened, pufferfish will swallow water or air, inflating themselves into a ball. This causes their spines to bulge, making them harder for predators to bite. (Pufferfish image from the internet; yes, these are all pufferfish, but for humans, they do feel quite nice to touch.)

Qin Anning has always been very bold, and since she was wearing gloves, she took the pufferfish from Fu Wan's hand without any hesitation.

"This guy has quite a temper."

It took a while for the pufferfish's belly to deflate before Qin Anning could get a good look at the fish.

Whether I say it or not, it's still cute when it's puffed up.

When it's not swollen into a round ball, she can clearly see the combination of brown on the fish's back and white on its belly. Although it looks ordinary, it has a pair of blue-green eyes.

Even more amazingly, its eyes change color depending on the light.

After admiring it for a while, Qin Anning thought about asking Fu Wan how to prepare the pufferfish. As a result, she saw Fu Wan tying a knot in the net in her hand, trapping the sea fish inside.

"Ah Wan, why did you add a knot to the net?"

"Oh, we don't have any empty buckets to put the fish in. I'll just put it in a net bag and then put the net bag in the trench to keep it alive. I'll bring it back with me when I get back."

"What should we do with this pufferfish?"

Fu Wan glanced at the little caramel in her hand; you couldn't even see the fish unless you looked closely.

"I'll send it back to the sea!"

She then took the baby pufferfish from Qin Anning's hand and threw it forcefully into the waves. The baby pufferfish took off and, together with the waves, returned to the sea.

"Ah Wan, this fish doesn't look very big. What kind of fish is it?"

Qin Anning looked at the fish in Fu Wan's net with some curiosity.

"Oh, it's a golden drum fish!"

Seeing her interest, Fu Wan simply handed her the net, then, with a glint in her eye, jokingly tried to scare her:

"This golden drum fish is one of the common sea fish in our area. Don't be fooled by its appearance, which looks like a plate. The spines on its back and sides are poisonous."

These words startled Qin Anning, who was examining the fish.

"Don't worry, you'll be fine as long as you don't get a fish bone stuck in your skin. If a fish bone does get stuck in your skin, it might be numb for two or three days, but it will return to normal in a few days."

Qin Anning gained a new understanding of sea fish: "Is this fish edible?"

She laughed after asking the question, realizing she was just rambling.

If it weren't edible, Awan probably would have sent the fish back into the sea with the pufferfish.

Fu Wan nodded, "It's edible. This fish is delicious whether steamed or braised."

Since there was nothing else to do, Fu Wan decided to introduce the golden drum fish to her.

The golden drum fish, also known as the money fish, is one of the most popular fish in the area. Because of its spots, which resemble those of a leopard, many business people like to buy it as a symbol of good fortune.

The golden drum fish isn't brightly colored; its back is iron gray, its belly is grayish-white, and its back has a touch of orange-yellow.

Because of its small head and large body, it swims in an endearing, clumsy way, so it can be used not only in cooking but also as an ornamental fish. (Image of a golden drum fish net, please delete if infringing copyright) After hearing Fu Wan's brief introduction, Qin Anning didn't find the golden drum fish in the net so scary anymore.

It even looks kind of cute.

Although it's poisonous, it's simple-minded. So what if it's poisonous? The toxicity isn't strong!

While the two were chatting and laughing, Fu Wan tied the net containing the fish to the rocks by the trench. Fortunately, the rope on the net was long enough that there was no problem putting the entire net into the seawater of the trench.

Just as Fu Wan was preparing to explore the next trench, Fu Liang's excited voice rang out again:

"Awan, there's a grouper here!"

"It's a giant grouper!"
