Chapter 12 The Storm

As soon as the guests entered, Ye Xiaocui quickly invited them to sit down. Aunt Fu and the village chief had brought some steamed buns they had made, since there were several more mouths to feed.

Shen Lingling also obediently busied herself setting out the bowls and chopsticks. When Fu Wan brought the dishes into the living room, she saw the strange man standing to the side wearing a white shirt.

"Who are you?"

My surname is Bai.

Fu Wan suddenly realized that the person in front of her must be Dr. Bai, who had treated her brother's leg.

"Dr. Bai, thank you for treating my brother. Please sit down and eat, don't be shy."

Bai Qianzhou nodded, his eyes following Fu Wan's busy figure. So this was the patient's sister.

He also heard what Village Chief Fu said: his brother was injured and bedridden, his father had died in a shipwreck, he had divorced and returned home with his daughter, yet he still had such a fighting spirit and was optimistic and positive, which was truly rare.

Bai Qianzhou secretly made up her mind to use better medicine for her brother later, and she would deduct the cost from his salary.

Hopefully, this woman can bring back the stingray bones he wanted.

Seeing that several dishes were on the table, Fu Wan specially cooked some extra potatoes and made a few cornbread pancakes before starting to eat.

Looking at the table full of food, Village Chief Fu knew that Fu Wan's family had put a lot of thought into it. Ye Xiaocui even brought out some yellow wine that she had hidden at home, which she paired with crunchy peanuts. Fu San and Village Chief Fu also drank to their hearts' content.

After several rounds of drinks, as the dinner was drawing to a close, Fu Wan finally remembered to ask Bai Qianzhou about her brother's condition.

"The swelling should go down after applying the medicine to his leg for half a month. After the swelling goes down, take him to the county hospital for an X-ray. With some rest, he should be fine."

He picked out all the poisoned, rotten flesh today. Luckily, he always carried his scalpel and disinfectant with him. However, there was no need to tell the woman in front of him about such a bloody scene.

Fu Wan was extremely grateful and immediately assured her that she would take care of the stingray bones and go out to catch them when the weather was suitable for going out to sea.

After everyone had left, Fu Wan and Ye Xiaocui cleaned up the dishes and chopsticks. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning ripped through the night sky, followed by a deafening rumble of thunder.

Large raindrops began to pelt the yard. "Quick, bring in the laundry! A storm is coming!"

Fu Wan noticed this afternoon that although there was a slight breeze from time to time, the weather was unusually gloomy.

Sure enough, it started raining that night. I wonder if Fu San and the village chief have gotten home yet.

Ye Xiaocui rushed out to retrieve the fishing nets hanging in the yard. As for the clothes, Shen Lingling had already taken them down with a stool that evening.

"Mother, you go in first, I'll collect it!"

Fu Wan grabbed the fishing net from Ye Xiaocui's arms and urged her to go home.

The kitchen doors were locked, and the chickens were taken from their coop by Fu Wan to the pigsty to shelter from the rain.

The rain grew heavier and the thunder grew louder. Fu Wan and her daughter finished tidying up and went back to their room. Before going to bed, she went to check on Fu Ming's room again. Seeing that he was alright, she then climbed into her own bed with Chen Lingling.

"Mom, is this rain going to last a long time? I made a hopscotch date with Xiaohong next door tomorrow, can I go?"

Fu Wan touched her daughter's little face and couldn't help but pinch her cheek. "We can go tomorrow if the rain stops. If it's still windy and rainy like this, we can't go!"

"Can't we go even if it's windy but not raining?" The wind outside was getting stronger and stronger, and its howling sound was especially loud in the dark night.

Chen Lingling shrank back in fright and clung tightly to Fu Wan.

"Don't be afraid, we'll be fine as long as we don't wander around the house."

Fu Wan wondered if this storm had happened in her previous life, but she couldn't get anxious. She did see a news report in modern times about people living in high-rise buildings being blown off the building by the wind, bed and all, at night.

However, houses from the 1980s were quite sturdy, and since they weren't modern high-rises, they could withstand some wind.

...

The next morning, the wind and rain still hadn't stopped, and Fu Wan didn't go out. Ye Xiaocui asked her to boil some water, and she wiped her son down herself.

Fortunately, Fu Ming wasn't completely immobile. Lying in bed for too long could easily cause sores on his back, so Ye Xiaocui often went to his room to encourage him to turn over when he had nothing to do. Therefore, Fu Ming's condition was quite good.

The day passed quickly. By 11 or 12 o'clock after dinner, the wind had stopped and the rain had mostly stopped.

Fu Wan lay in bed, unable to fall asleep. It had just rained; there must be plenty of good stuff at the beach. She wanted to go check it out.

After tossing and turning, she finally got up, covered Chen Lingling with the blanket, and put a pillow to the side to prevent the girl from falling off the bed.

As Fu Wan put on her straw hat and was about to leave, Ye Xiaocui's door creaked open.

"Are you going to go beachcombing? I'd like to go too."

Ye Xiaocui had lived by the sea for most of her life, so she knew perfectly well that the seaside was where the most things were at this time of year.

Although I don't know if it will rain again, the wind should stop now that it's stopped. Even if the wind and rain come again, the beach is close to home, so I can run there in a few steps.

Thinking this, the two of them carried two buckets out the door. Ye Xiaocui also took a carrying pole for convenience, while Fu Wan thought for a moment and took the clean fertilizer bag from the doorway with her when she left.

Before long, the mother and daughter arrived at the beach. The usually clean beach was now somewhat messy, with several broken tree branches half buried in the sand and half exposed.

"Ah Wan, you take the flashlight, and I'll take the kerosene lamp."

There's only one flashlight at home. Young people have good eyesight, so Ah Wan might find something good with the flashlight.

Fu Wan didn't care. In fact, she only realized now that she could see clearly in the dark, just like in the daytime.

"Mom, I'll take the kerosene lamp, I can see. You take the flashlight, but be careful of the seashells on the ground so you don't cut your shoes."

Some of the shells are quite sharp; if you step on one, it can even cut a crack in the hard sole of a canvas shoe.

Fu Wan, carrying a kerosene lamp, hadn't walked far when she found two octopuses struggling to crawl. She picked them up with tongs and quickly threw them into the bucket. Sure enough, the moment she threw them in, the octopuses spurted out a bunch of ink.

Luckily, I lost it quickly!

Fu Wan chuckled at herself, and took a few more steps with the bucket, only to trip over a large rock without noticing.

"Oh my god!"

She tripped and fell to the ground. The damp sand immediately soaked her pants, but luckily she was wearing that mermaid outfit underneath—hey, it was waterproof!

Made by our ancestors, it's trustworthy!

Fu Wan then picked up the kerosene lamp and examined the large rock. She was shocked to find that it was not a large rock at all.

It's clearly a giant sea turtle that's been overturned on the beach by the waves and is struggling to turn itself over!
