This method of net casting is different from casting nets at sea; it is neither trawl nor hand-thrown net. In Fujia Village, this method of net casting is called hanging net or spreading net.
The so-called "hanging net" refers to the fishermen putting a fishing net that is nearly two or three hundred meters long into the sea, fixing both ends of the net in the mud and sand with relatively thick iron nails, and then using corresponding steel wire buckles to firmly fix the net rope in the sea.
The principle behind this fishing method is to set up a barrier in the sea. When the tide rises, many migratory fish will swim ashore with the current, and the net can intercept many of these fish.
This fishing method is actually quite common, but because of the strong impact of the seawater, it can cause significant damage to the fishing nets. A net placed in the sea like this will be ruined after only two or three uses at most.
Since fishing like this relies entirely on luck, the older fishermen in the village got impatient with it and gave these teenagers a chance. They even wove their own fishing nets from discarded ones.
Every fisherman knows how to weave and catch nets. A fishing net several hundred meters long may need to be stored for several months, but for children, one successful attempt is enough to fascinate them.
The weather has been nice these past few days, and the sea breeze isn't too cold. Fu Wan had tried net fishing before, but that was a long time ago. Now, looking at those teenagers, she finds it all quite novel.
The nets were set down and the catch could not be checked until the next day. After the boys put the nets down, they didn't leave. Instead, they took shovels and tongs and started looking for seafood everywhere.
Fishermen are born with the idea of finding seafood to make money. Even a child this young thinks about getting some fish to exchange for money in Fu Sannian. This way, they can not only buy some snacks, but also supplement their family's income.
Just as they were watching the commotion, Fu Ming and his group arrived with their tools, along with Fu Liang and his wife. Jiang Chunlan and Ye Xiaocui followed behind, carrying buckets and fire tongs.
"Hey, do you have any sea snails or razor clams? I haven't had them in ages and I'm really craving them!"
Fu Ming rolled up his sleeves and sighed. Lately, all he'd seen were fish, crabs, and oysters; he'd never seen razor clams or sea snails before.
Just thinking about stir-fried razor clams with scallions and stir-fried snails makes Fu Ming's mouth water uncontrollably.
Before the group even started, a gasp of surprise came from the side.
"Mom, I found a seashell!"
Fu Wan was surprised to find that Fu Ling was the first to open a business today. She saw Fu Ling dig out a cat's eye snail from somewhere, which was as big as an egg.
Upon seeing this, Fu Ming immediately gave her a thumbs up, "No wonder she's my niece, just like me!"
He immediately rubbed his hands together, grabbed a flashlight in one hand and fire tongs in the other, and said, "Awan, we have to hurry, we can't let the children get more than us!"
If word gets out, won't he lose face?
Fu Wan responded and instructed Fu Ling and Qin Mingzhu not to chase the waves before she began searching for traces of razor clams near the children.
There were quite a few people on the beach, so Fu Wan and her friends deliberately found a quiet corner. Although Fu Ling and Qin Mingzhu were digging for seashells, they still couldn't resist the beautiful shells they encountered.
The two women squatted down in the mud and dug hard with the shovels that Boss Fu had made for them. Before long, Fu Wan also found traces of razor clams.
Actually, spring is not the season when razor clams are abundant. It's just that the temperature has been high recently, otherwise it would be difficult to find any trace of razor clams on the mudflats.
About an hour later, Fu Wan had harvested about two bowls of razor clams. Just then, Fu Ming and Fu Liang returned wading through the water, and the siblings gathered together to look at their respective catches.
"Oh, Wan, these razor clams are pretty good!"
"Brother Liang, you even caught an octopus! And these shrimp are huge too, that's amazing!"
Fu Liang was a little embarrassed by Fu Wan's praise, while Fu Ming eagerly showed off his achievements.
"Look at my crabs! I even caught a small filefish!"
Hearing the commotion, Wang Huiping also went over. Although she was also a fisherman's daughter, she rarely went out to sea with her father.
As the only child in the family, he was naturally well cared for. Even when he went beachcombing, he always went with his mother.
While Fu Wan and the others searched for seafood in the water, she searched for sea snails in the mud and sand nearby, and also helped keep an eye on the two children to prevent them from going into the water.
The three of them poured their catch together. Seeing that it was still early, Fu Ming and Fu Liang waded through the seawater to continue searching for seafood. Fu Wan glanced at them and wanted to follow them.
"Sister-in-law, I need to talk to you about something. Could you keep an eye on them and make sure they don't go into the water? When I get back, I'll give you half of the fish."
"Hey, what do you need fish for? Don't worry, I'm watching over it here!"
Children of this age are too noisy even for dogs. Although Wang Huiping has no siblings, she has quite a few cousins.
The younger ones aren't much older than Fu Ling and the others.
She didn't know how to go into the water to catch fish and crabs, so she had already taken on the responsibility of looking after the child herself. The water temperature was low this season, and if the child were swept away by the waves, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Fu Wan tied the net around her waist and walked forward to a relatively open rocky area. Besides her, Fu Ming, and Fu Liang, there were a few villagers with flashlights or kerosene lamps, but no one spoke much, and the only sound was the waves crashing against the rocks.
After taking a few steps, Fu Wan spotted several pieces of seaweed in the water that looked quite good. She simply scooped them up and put them directly into the basket on her back.
Seaweed is also good; you can take it home, dry it, and then use it in cold dishes or soups.
"Hey, there looks like a fish."
Fu Wan spotted a fish tail under the rocks where they had just harvested seaweed. She walked slowly and quietly forward, taking out a hand net she had prepared earlier from the basket on her back.
Ordinary people shouldn't even think about catching fish with their bare hands in the water. Whether it's river fish or sea fish, wild fish are always more alert. Fu Wan took the net and scooped it up by the tail, then quickly pulled it up. By the time the fish realized what was happening, it was already trapped in the net, and no matter how much it struggled, it was all in vain.
"Hey, Awan, what kind of fish is that?"
"Gentian grouper, haha, it's actually a grouper!"
Fu Wan laughed heartily. Although it wasn't as valuable as grouper or other similar fish, the giant grouper tasted pretty good too.
What's more, the giant grouper in her hand is quite large; look at its thick tail, it must weigh at least two pounds!
Time flies. By the time Boss Fu was standing under the coconut tree calling for Fu Wan and the others to go back, it was already past ten o'clock.
Although they had only been out for less than three hours, Fu Wan and her group had a considerable haul, including several fish weighing about a pound each, as well as razor clams, octopus, and shrimp.
Not only that, Wang Huiping and Fu Ling also discovered a patch of large yellow snails.
"Haha, that was so much fun! We'll come back for nighttime beach adventures in a couple of days!"
