Inside the basket was a puppy, probably just a month old, all black, with its wet eyes wide open.
When it saw Fu Wan peeking out to look at it, it barked fiercely twice.
"This dog is so energetic!"
Ye Xiaocui also looked at the puppy. Ye Lin put down the basket and picked up the puppy directly.
“This dog is the offspring of our neighbor’s big black dog and a wild wolf from the mountain. My dad and I were thinking that your family just happened to need a guard dog, and this dog is perfect!”
Ye Xiaocui nodded with delight. She had long been thinking about having a guard at home. Once everyone went out to sea, she would see if those blind fools would still dare to mess with her family!
"Brother, let's not talk about anything else, please come in and have a seat!"
Ye Xiaocui quickly invited Ye Jianguo and Ye Lin into the house, as the two families were having dinner together that evening. Fu Ming and Fu Liang were busy in the kitchen chopping ribs and cleaning fish.
"Ah Liang, tell your mother to come over soon. Ah Ming, go and call your father back right away!"
While pouring water for Ye Jianguo and Ye Lin, Ye Xiaocui gave instructions to Fu Ming and Fu Liang.
Just then, Fu Ling ran home covered in sweat. "Mom, I heard a puppy barking! Where is the puppy?"
She and Fu Hong were playing with seashells under a nearby tree when they heard a dog barking at home, so they rushed back.
Fu Wan pulled the child away to wash his face. His hands and body were covered in sand and dirt, a far cry from how clean he was when he went out early in the morning.
"Look at all that mud on you. Next time you're this dirty, you'll have to wash your own clothes."
Fu Ling stuck out her tongue and suddenly noticed a small black dog sniffing around not far from the well.
"A puppy! There really is a puppy!"
Before Fu Wan could dry her hands, the little girl struggled and ran toward the dog.
"Be careful not to get scratched by the puppy."
At that time, the clinic did not have rabies vaccines readily available, so if you were scratched, you would have to go to the town hospital.
Ye Lin saw Fu Ling inside the house and called out, "Lingling!"
Fu Ling then noticed that there were guests at home, namely her beloved maternal great-uncle and cousin.
"Grandpa, Uncle, what brings you here?"
"Can you still catch loaches and shrimp at your house?"
Fu Ling still remembered the time she went to Qingshan Village to catch crayfish and loach a while ago.
No wonder, the rabbits we caught last time have already given birth to many baby rabbits.
Ye Lin came out and squatted down in front of Fu Ling. "The crayfish are all gone, but your uncle can take you to catch turtles and eels!"
Fu Ling didn't know what turtles and eels were, but that didn't stop her from showing her support.
"Really? That's amazing!"
However, she is more interested in the puppy right now.
"Mom, does this puppy have a name?"
Fu Wan didn't know either, and looked at Ye Lin.
Ye Lin shook his head. "No, in the village they just call them Little Black and Big Black. Why do dogs need names?"
Fu Ling perked up even more, "Then I'll give it a name, let's call it... Sun Wukong!"
Fu Wan sighed, realizing that she had been telling Fu Ling stories from "Journey to the West" to lull her to sleep lately, and the child was now completely obsessed with Sun Wukong.
They call the ones they like Sun Wukong, those they don't like Zhu Bajie, and those they particularly dislike directly call monsters.
"Sun Wukong?"
Ye Jianguo was a little confused; this person even had a name. Seeing his bewildered look, Fu Ling pulled him aside and told him the story of Journey to the West.
Just then, the courtyard gate was pushed open from the outside, and Boss Fu and Fu Ming returned.
"Brother, you must be tired from the journey! I specially went to buy some good wine, let's have a couple more drinks tonight."
Ye Jianguo still had that same honest and simple look. "I finished the farm work at home, and there wasn't much to do on the dam, so I thought I'd come and take a look."
There was no work to do on the dam, and the wild animals on the mountain were limited. Although the crayfish in the fields had made a lot of money, Ye Jianguo couldn't stay idle, so he simply brought his eldest son to visit Ye Xiaocui's house.
Boss Fu clapped his hands and said, "We're short-handed for our sea voyage, so stay here for a couple more days. We'll go out to sea for some fun tomorrow."
Aside from the first time she entered the cave on the side of the island, Fu Wan hadn't been to any other part of that isolated island.
Ye Jianguo is an experienced hunter, and an excellent worker.
"Don't worry, I'll pay you your due wages. I absolutely won't cheat my own people."
Ye Jianguo quickly refused, saying, "Don't talk about wages. We're all family. Helping each other out is the right thing to do."
That's what they said, but Ye Lin was incredibly excited. "Uncle, I'm going out to sea tomorrow too! I want to go crabbing with A-Wan and the others!"
"Go, all of you!"
The house was bustling with activity when someone knocked on the door.
Fu Wan was wondering who it was, so she called out.
"They just pushed the door open; it wasn't locked!"
Everyone was wondering who the visitor was when the courtyard gate was pushed open from the outside, revealing Bai Qianzhou pushing a brand-new bicycle.
"Uncle Xiaobai!"
Fu Ling was the first to react, and immediately ran over and hugged Bai Qianzhou's leg.
Bai Qianzhou stuffed the malted milk powder and candy from the bicycle basket into her hands.
"I bought this for you."
Fu Ming and Ye Lin also went over and patted him on the shoulder.
"You've gotten quite robust!"
Bai Qianzhou smiled gently and handed the remaining cloth bag from the bicycle basket to Fu Wan, who was watching the commotion from the side.
"I just bought it randomly on the street, please don't mind it."
Fu Wan opened the bag with a puzzled look and saw several large, round red apples lying inside.
These aren't apples you can just buy on the street; even the supply and marketing cooperative probably doesn't have apples of this quality.
Ye Xiaocui quickly invited Bai Qianzhou into the house, "You've come at the right time, let's have dinner at home tonight."
Bai Qianzhou and Fu Mingye were old acquaintances and had a very good relationship.
Even though they were a little reserved when they first came in, they became familiar with each other after chatting for a bit.
Knowing that Bai Qianzhou was now a military doctor, the two young men were even more curious.
Every man has an innate yearning for and admiration for soldiers, and they are no exception.
Although some confidential matters could not be discussed, Bai Qianzhou patiently explained to them things that did not violate his principles.
Seeing that Bai Qianzhou had become noticeably stronger, Fu Ming and Ye Lin realized that military doctors also had to participate in training.
Now he not only admired Bai Qianzhou greatly, but was also proud to have such a good brother.
The dinner was very lavish. Fu Ming, Fu Liang, and others came to help, and Jiang Chunlan and Lin Qiuju also arrived early. With the families working together, the meal was quickly prepared.
There were too many people and not enough seats at the table, so Boss Fu went to the village chief's house to borrow a large round table so that everyone could barely sit down.
The meal was a great success, and Bai Qianzhou was filled with envy upon learning that everyone would be going out to sea the next day.
"I have to rush back tonight; there are rules in the team."
Fu Ming, Fu Liang, and Ye Lin both expressed their regret, noting that during the meal, all the men except Bai Qianzhou drank quite a bit.
Ye Lin, in particular, without his wife and mother to keep him in check, completely let himself go.
"Ah Ming, drink up! Tomorrow you have to take me digging for oysters and catching yellow croaker!"
