Chapter 6

Wei Lan was furious as she rode the crowded and bumpy bus back to her family compound. Along the way, the bus was filled with mixed smells. She was squeezed in the crowd and became more and more angry. She was thinking about going to her sister to find out why Mu Nanhe suddenly got married.

As soon as she entered the family yard, she heard a commotion. She looked up and saw a group of people gathered together, discussing something with great interest. When she listened closer, she found that they were all praising Yang Qingyan.

Wei Lan's face darkened instantly, she was so angry that her nails dug deep into her flesh, she was furious: she could have taken their car back comfortably, without having to squeeze into this stinky bus, but Mu Nanhe had rejected her so heartlessly. Now she had just returned and heard these people praising Yang Qingyan vigorously, how could she not be furious.

She gritted her teeth, took a few steps forward, forced a disdainful smile on her face, and said loudly: "Humph, who knows if it was just a blind cat that encountered a fatal news? If she really knew medical skills, how could she be like that. Look at her, she is dressed in rags, her face is pale and her body is thin, she doesn't look like a capable doctor at all." As she spoke, she deliberately puffed out her chest, as if she was standing on the moral high ground and wanted to subvert Yang Qingyan's image with just these few words.

After hearing her words, the heated discussion suddenly stopped, and everyone looked at each other with some confusion on their faces. Someone whispered, "What this little girl said does make sense. Looking at the way Comrade Yang Qingyan was dressed, she doesn't look like someone who knows medicine." Others frowned slightly and fell into deep thought, as if they were re-examining the scene they saw yesterday.

However, there were also a few neighbors who witnessed Yang Qingyan's rescue yesterday. After hearing what Wei Lan said, they were very angry. An old lady frowned and retorted: "Don't talk nonsense, little girl. Xiaohu was almost dying yesterday. If it wasn't for Comrade Yang Qingyan's timely intervention, the child would have been in danger. I saw her needlework clearly. It was definitely not a blind cat encountering a fatal disease."

Another sister-in-law also nodded and echoed, "That's right, the situation was so critical at the time, Comrade Yang Qingyan was calm and composed, and stabilized Xiaohu's condition in a few seconds, and also prescribed treatment. This is not something that ordinary people can do."

Wei Lan's face turned pale and red when she saw someone refute her, and she was even more angry and embarrassed, but she couldn't lose her temper on the spot. She glared at those who spoke for Yang Qingyan, snorted coldly, turned around and walked quickly towards her sister's house, secretly swearing in her heart that she must find her sister to make a plan, and she couldn't let Yang Qingyan take all the limelight, she had to snatch Mu Nanhe away.

The afternoon sun gently sprinkled on the family courtyard. Yang Qingyan was busy alone beside the faucet in the yard, soaking the newly bought sheets and clothes one by one, then pouring in the detergent in an orderly manner and rubbing them with her hands skillfully. She lowered her eyes, her expression was focused, and her eyes were a little indifferent, but she was not angry, just immersed in her own thoughts.

Mu Nanhe found a hammer and nails in the house, and stood by the window, nailing them carefully, preparing to hang up the newly bought curtains. His movements were orderly, but his expression was a little serious. For him, marriage with Yang Qingyan was more of a responsibility, and it was not love.

After the curtains were hung, he turned and walked into the slightly messy kitchen, patiently putting away the pots and pans. Although his movements seemed a little unfamiliar, they revealed his seriousness.

After finishing the work at hand, Mu Nanhe looked up at the sky and realized that he still needed to buy vegetables today. After a little thought, he decided to go to the canteen to buy some food. He walked into the yard and saw Yang Qingyan washing clothes. He paused and asked softly, "Qingyan, what kind of food do you like? I'll go."

Yang Qingyan stopped what she was doing and slowly raised her head. A few strands of hair fell beside her cheeks, and the sunlight coated her with a layer of gold. Her eyes met with Mu Nanhe for a moment, then looked away. She tilted her head slightly to think for a moment, and replied quietly: "If there are vegetables, buy one vegetable and one meat dish."

Mu Nanhe nodded slightly, said "OK", then turned around and walked quickly towards the cafeteria.

Not long after, Mu Nanhe hurried back with two lunch boxes. The food in the lunch boxes was steaming hot, and the aroma filled his nose. He walked into the courtyard, with a slight smile on his face, and said to Yang Qingyan, "Qingyan, come and eat."

Yang Qingyan stood up after hearing the voice, wiped her hands with a towel, walked to Mu Nanhe's side, and took the lunch box. When she opened the lunch box lid and saw the emerald green vegetables, a hint of emotion flashed across her eyes. She whispered softly, "I haven't seen such fresh vegetables for a long time."

My thoughts drift back to the dark time of the end of the world. There, the ecology collapsed, many species and creatures were on the verge of extinction, and food resources were extremely scarce. It was simply a luxury to have green, juicy and tender vegetables like the ones in front of me. At that time, people fought to the death for a piece of food, and life was as fragile as a candle in the wind. But now, in these 70 years that seem ordinary but full of vitality, everything seems so precious and rare.

When Mu Nanhe heard her say this, he stopped dead in his tracks. His heart felt like it was hit hard by a heavy hammer and he felt uncomfortable again. He couldn't help but wonder in his heart: Can't I even eat vegetables at home? Thinking back to the past year when he was on a mission outside, he knew almost nothing about the situation at home. He thought that if he sent money back every month, his family would be able to take good care of her, but he didn't expect that she would have to live such a hard life. Seeing Yang Qingyan's emotional expression at the plate of vegetables, Mu Nanhe felt full of self-blame. He opened his mouth, wanting to say something comforting, but found that his throat seemed to be choked and he couldn't make a sound for a while.

Yang Qingyan was unaware of the turbulent emotions in Mu Nanhe's heart, and was still immersed in her own thoughts, slowly savoring the sweet taste of the vegetables. The memories of the end of the world and the current peace were intertwined, making her mood particularly complicated.

Mu Nanhe took a deep breath and tried his best to recover his inner emotions. He slowly walked to the stone table and sat down. He gently put down the lunch box in his hand and tried to make his voice sound as steady as usual: "In the future... it will get better and better." He looked at Yang Qingyan firmly, trying to convey a kind of strength, a determination to make her believe that the days to come would no longer be difficult.

Hearing this, Yang Qingyan looked up at him, nodded slightly, and replied softly, "Yeah." This simple word, for her, was not only a response to Mu Nanhe's words, but also a hope for future life. Although the road ahead may still be full of thorns, it is rare to have this hot meal and this moment of peace at this moment.

The two of them ate their meal facing each other in silence. The sun was still warm, the breeze was still gentle, but the air was filled with an indescribable solemnity and hope. In this silent communication, they each had different longings for each other, but they were also trying to get closer to each other, trying to integrate into each other's world.
