Chapter 5: Prelude to the Famine (2/2)

Grandma Lin looked at it with some difficulty, "If we carry all of these out and parade them around, we'll just be a walking target."

Lin Yangyang replied with a very serious "yes".

Lin Zhaozhao:...

"Grandma, I have a way." With a wave of her hand, Lin Zhaozhao reduced the grain that had taken up half the room by more than half, leaving Grandma Lin and Lin Yangyang in disbelief.

"Second sister, how come you can do magic tricks?"

“Yes, Zhao Niang…” Old Madam Lin said, but Lin Zhao Zhao took out the grain she had stored in her spatial storage and explained, “Grandma, it’s all because my husband is watching over us from heaven.”

"Before I went to war, my husband gave me a jade stone and told me not to take it off no matter what happened. Later, I had a conflict with the Li family. When I came back, I found that the jade stone was gone. Instead, there was a space for storing things, and there were many fruits that I didn't recognize." Lin Zhaozhao said half-truthfully, and then opened her clothes to show the jade stone mark under her collarbone to Old Madam Lin and Lin Yangyang.

At the same time, he took out two handfuls of cherries and stuffed them into Lin Yangyang and Old Lady Lin's hands.

Looking at the lantern-like fruit, Old Mrs. Lin hesitated for a moment, but Lin Yangyang was carefree and stuffed it directly into her mouth. The moment she tasted it, her eyes seemed to light up with green light. She ate while spitting out the pit, grinning at her. With her honest expression and the cherry juice between her lips and teeth, it was somehow a little creepy to look at.

Grandma Lin ate only one cherry before trying to give it back to Lin Zhaozhao. This cherry tasted good and looked nice; it was a rare treat, and she couldn't let it go to waste.

"Grandma, I saved some for Mom and Dad. You're eating this, it'll spoil if you leave it too long." After being threatened by Lin Zhaozhao, Grandma Lin finally behaved herself. While eating, she didn't forget to instruct, "Keep this to yourself, don't tell anyone."

"I know what I mean." The two sisters said in unison. When they looked at each other, Lin Zhaozhao noticed the eagerness in Lin Yangyang's eyes and grabbed a handful of cherries for her. Lin Yangyang smiled mischievously. This time, it wasn't like Pigsy eating ginseng fruit.

After finishing the cherries, Grandma Lin led Lin Yangyang and Lin Zhaozhao to get busy. They kept only a few pounds of coarse grains and put the rest into their storage space. Pots and pans, sauerkraut jars, water tanks, quilts, blankets, winter clothes, and so on filled one room of the wooden house.

If it weren't for the fact that she still needed to sleep in the bed, Old Mrs. Lin would have wanted Lin Zhaozhao to move the bed out as well.

After they had almost finished moving everything, Old Mrs. Lin gestured for Lin Zhaozhao to follow.

Lin Zhaozhao followed Grandma Lin into the house, where she saw the old lady bring out a large box. When she opened it, she found it full of children's clothes, hats, tiger-head shoes, and diapers, piled up to the top of the box.

"This is all money your mother and I saved for you. Keep it safe."

"Grandma, thank you." Lin Zhaozhao felt a warmth in her heart. Having lived in the apocalypse for so long and experienced so much of the coldness and warmth of human relationships, she was a little unaccustomed to this pure and unadulterated kindness, but that didn't stop her eyes from turning red.

After putting the box into her spatial storage, Lin Zhaozhao was ruthlessly sent back into the house by Old Lady Lin.

Lin Zhaozhao: My tears are still welling up in my eyes.

The old lady and Lin Yangyang went into the kitchen to make pancakes and steamed buns with coarse grains.

As soon as Lin Zhaozhao returned to the house, she entered the space, which had been completely transformed. The yard was filled with fruit trees, and vegetables, watermelons, corn, potatoes, and sweet potatoes occupied a large area of land in front of the house, adorned with dewdrops, full of vitality.

Lin Zhaozhao walked straight into the courtyard. The fruit trees inside were lush and leafy, but the fruit had all been picked, making them look rather empty. Lin Zhaozhao exhaled a deep breath and began to encourage the fruit trees to grow.
