Chapter 16: Taking a shortcut

On the official road to the south of Dongtu County, a group of thirty families formed a mighty team that stretched for hundreds of meters. The official road that Su Yin and his group took was called an official road, but it was actually a dirt road, just much wider than an ordinary path.

After walking for about three hours, Yang Lizheng from Xinghua Village called for a stop and rest.

It was noon, the sun was high in the sky and very hot, so everyone hid under the shade of the trees on both sides of the official road.

Su Yin and his two companions walked very close to his uncle's family. They had been walking for the entire morning without stopping for a rest. Everyone was extremely tired, so they didn't care and just found a place to sit down.

We had to travel soon, so no one had started cooking yet.

In a farming family, when it is not the busy farming season, people basically eat two meals, morning meal and evening meal, which correspond to breakfast and dinner.

After walking for so long, the bowl of thick porridge I had at five in the morning had long been digested and I was starving.

Su Yin took out a package from the car, took out three bread cakes and some dried meat from it, and gave them to her mother and sister-in-law.

When Su's mother saw the dried meat and biscuits, she waved her hands and said, "Mom is not hungry, you guys eat."

It's not that I'm not hungry, it's that I can't bear to eat.

Su Yin knew it well, and did not give her the chance to refuse. She directly put it into her hand and said in a low voice, "Mom, don't worry, there is food in the car."

Su Baozhu knew the food on the bus best, so it was okay to eat one or two more meals.

"Sister-in-law, just eat with confidence." Su Baozhu winked at her.

Su's mother looked at the two of them and did not refuse.

She ate a few bites of the dry biscuits, stood up and walked to Yang Taohua and Xiao Yanggui, and gave the two pieces of dried meat to the two younger ones.

Yang Taohua looked at the dried meat in her hand, her eyes shining.

Su's mother made a hushing gesture to the two children, telling them to eat quickly.

My uncle has three children, one son and two daughters, all of whom are married. The husbands of the two daughters are from the next village, and they came here after receiving the news.

My second uncle had three sons, one was married, and the other two were of marriageable age.

The only children born to my uncle are a son and a daughter. The oldest, Yang Taohua, is just over ten years old, and the younger Yang Gui is only five years old.

The other older nephews wouldn't say anything if they saw it.

The three aunts also prepared food for their husbands. The men ate a whole cake, while the women shared a piece of cake between two people and ate it with water.

The head of the village, the butcher Yang, and many other families saw that everyone around them had eaten, so they also gave some food to their men. Pulling the cart with human power along the way was very physically demanding.

"Cousin, please keep your things safe and don't let anyone snatch them away." Little Yang Gui came closer to Su Yin and glanced diagonally across the room.

Su Yin followed his gaze and saw a boy, about five years old, staring at them.

The child was very strong and chubby. Such a strong child was extremely rare in farmers' homes. On the contrary, the girl who was busy under the shade of the tree was thin, with a pale and withered face. She was as thin as a bamboo pole and seemed like she would fall down if the wind blew.

There are six people in the family, two old people at the top and a young couple with two children at the bottom.

One son and one daughter, two children, are like two extremes.

When the boy saw them looking at him, he made a face at them, ran to the woman, and pulled her sleeve to act coquettishly.

"Mom, I want to eat jerky, too."

Da Zhuang's mother coaxed the child, "Be good, Da Zhuang! Let's eat bread. Bread is delicious too."

"No, I want to eat dried meat." Da Zhuang threw the bread to the ground.

While Da Zhuang's mother was coaxing the child, the girl next to them picked up the bread on the ground, brushed off the dust on it, but didn't dare to eat it. She swallowed her saliva and timidly walked to her mother with the bread in her hand.

"Mom, my brother doesn't want it anymore. Can I have a bite, just a small bite?" the girl asked timidly.

These words seemed to have angered the woman, so she raised her hand and slapped her in the face.

"Eat, eat, eat. All you do is eat all day. You are the reincarnation of a starving ghost. There is only so much food at home. If you don't feed your grandfather and the others, you will enjoy it. Hurry up and fan your brother."

The man and the old couple who were sitting nearby to rest seemed not to have seen this scene.

The girl had a red and swollen face, but she didn't dare to cry because she felt wronged. She picked up a palm-leaf fan and fanned her brother.

"Sister Daya, you are so pitiful." Little Yang Gui sighed in a low voice.

One look at this situation tells you that this child is having a hard time at home.

The whole family favors boys over girls, and this is very extreme. They don't treat their daughter as a human being at all.

Yang Jin, the eldest son of the village head, came over and said, "Brother Dashan, my father asked you to come over."

"What's up?"

"Let's discuss the next steps."

"good."

After Yang Jin finished speaking, he walked towards the next house.

Yang Dashan stood up, and Su Yin followed suit, "Uncle, I want to go and listen, too."

"Let's go."

When the two men walked to the headman's house, there were already many people sitting around, and each household had sent a representative.

After everyone was present, the village head asked everyone to sit in a circle.

Yang Lizheng said, "Now that everyone is here, I want to tell you something."

"Just now, Dashu told me that there is a small road ahead, which is half the distance to Fushun County than taking the official road. The small road is a bit difficult to walk on, and you have to walk a section of mountain road."

"Can the car pass?" Yang Dashan asked.

This is his biggest concern.

Yang Dashu said, "Sure, there is just enough space for a car to pass through."

"What do you think? Should we take the small road or the official road?" Yang Lizheng looked at everyone.

Da Zhuang's father said, "Take the short road. The less you walk, the easier it is. You can also save some food."

These words touched everyone's heart.

"I agree with taking the small path."

"I agree."

Su Yin suddenly spoke up, "Uncle Dashu, if we take the small road now, how long will it take to get to Fushun County?"

"It will take eight hours."

"What about taking the official road?" Su Yin asked again.

"It will take about fourteen hours."

In comparison, walking on the mountain road would take nearly twice as long. When everyone was tempted, Su Yin spoke again.

"Going up the mountain road at this hour means we have to spend the night in the mountains."

Butcher Yang said with a smile: "Su girl, don't worry! It's dangerous in the mountains, but we have many people, so we are not afraid."

"yes."

"Haha, girls are just timid." Da Zhuang's father said with a smile.

Yang Dashan glared at the other person fiercely, and Dazhuang's father suddenly didn't dare to laugh anymore and closed his mouth awkwardly.

After more than twenty people expressed their opinions, most of them were willing to take the small road.

After discussing the next journey, the village head called on everyone to set off.

In this era, not many people can leave Dongtu County. Yang Dashu is better than most people and has been to several surrounding counties.

He knew the route better than anyone else, so he led the way.
