Chapter 30 Encountering a Village

On the official road leading to Yongqing County, it was just daybreak and people sleeping on both sides of the road woke up one after another.

Last night, Su Yin had no dreams.

Su Baozhu glanced at the red spot on her arm and asked, "Why do you attract so many mosquitoes?"

"Maybe my blood smells better." Su Yin joked.

"Hahaha, it's really possible. I slept next to you and didn't even get a few bites." Su Baozhu showed off her white and tender hands.

"Go! Go! Go."

Su Yin smiled and pushed her away, then walked over to Su's mother, who was kneading dough and making pancakes.

There were not many pancakes left that Su Yin had prepared before, so she prepared some now in case of emergency.

"Finish your meal first. There's porridge in the pot." Su's mother said, her hands moving non-stop.

Su Baozhu walked forward and looked at the pancake without any seasoning. She couldn't help but sigh, "The scallion pancake was delicious before."

"There are no onions now. If there were onions, it would be easy." Su Yin also likes food with the flavor of scallion oil.

Mother Su looked at the two little ones and said unhappily, "It's good enough to have something to eat, but you're still picky."

Su Baozhu stuck out her tongue guiltily.

During these days of fleeing famine, the food she ate was better than what she had at home. If it weren’t for the famine, the food would have tasted better than anything she had eaten at home.

She felt more and more that it was a wise decision to follow Su Yin.

Su Baozhu filled a bowl of porridge and handed it to Su Yin, but Su Yin didn't take it. Instead, she pointed to the grove behind her, turned around and walked into the woods, deliberately taking a longer route to avoid everyone. As soon as she squatted down, she saw with her sharp eyes that there were green onions swaying gracefully in the crevice of the stone opposite, with morning dew still hanging on the branches.

Su Yin quickly took care of her physiological needs and ran to the opposite side under the rock, where there was only a small bunch of wild onions.

There are wild onions here, and there must be some around.

Sure enough, we found a few more places not far away. They were sparse and the growth was not very good. Perhaps it was related to the drought. I'm afraid that they will die of thirst in a short time.

"onion!"

Su Baozhu noticed the onion in Su Yin's hand at a glance and was inexplicably surprised.

Wash the green onions, cut them into small pieces, and give them to Su's mother to make scallion oil pancakes.

As soon as the pancake was put in the pan to be baked, the aroma of onions wafted out immediately, whetting people's appetite.

Little Yang Gui smelled the scent and came over happily.

"Auntie, what delicious food do you want to make?" the little guy asked in a baby voice.

"Scallion pancake."

Su's mother gave the first pancake to the greedy little Yang Gui.

The aunt-in-law came over and picked up her son, "You greedy boy."

She couldn't help but take a few more sips of the scent and asked curiously, "Auntie, where did you get this onion?"

"I didn't find it. You should ask Yinyin."

Su Yin pointed to the grove behind them and said, "Go forward, and you'll see a stone about 300 meters away. I saw it near there. Aunt, you can look around that area, maybe there are more. I looked for a little bit, but I thought it was enough, so I didn't look around carefully."

"Okay, I understand."

The dry biscuits with green onion flavor smell as delicious as white flour ones.

My younger aunt, my older aunt, and my second aunt were carrying the things and walking into the mountains. When the nearby families saw them, they followed them happily. Whether they could find the things depended on their own abilities.

After a while, my aunt-in-law came back happily with a bunch of green onions. Each family found some, but the people who came later who wanted to go in and look for more were not so lucky.

Yang Lizheng urged each family to pack up and set off. The few families who found green onions had no time to make scallion pancakes, so they had to wait until night when they rested.

At noon, the sun was shining brightly and everyone took a rest under the shade of the trees.

There is a village in the distant valley and people are working in the fields.

My uncle looked at the wheat ears in the field and couldn't help but sigh, "The wheat ears here are not good, they are all dry and yellow."

My second uncle squatted down and grabbed a handful of soil from the field. It was already dry and cracked, lacking moisture.

"The situation here is worse than ours."

The working farmers noticed them, and soon a group of people came towards them.

Yang Lizheng and others stood up one after another, and the men subconsciously protected the women and children behind them.

Yang Lizheng stepped forward and bowed slightly.

"I am the head of Xinghua Village. I am here to rest for the time being and will not disturb you."

The old man in the lead bowed and said, "Don't misunderstand me! I am the head of this village. I am not here to drive you away. Judging from your attire, are you from Minzhou?"

This is because they are suspected to be refugees from Minzhou.

"The head of the village has misunderstood. We are from Dongtu County."

Those who heard that they were from Dongtu County were very surprised. Although Meizhou was suffering from drought, there was still a glimmer of hope. The fact that they were fleeing famine with their families really shocked them.

The head of the village responded quickly, "Brother, can you tell me why you left Dongtu County?"

Yang Lizheng looked at them in surprise, "Don't you know that the disaster victims from Yunzhou, Minzhou, and Ganzhou have rebelled in Yuzhou and are heading towards us."

As soon as these words were spoken, the faces of those people all changed.

In the past few days, they have seen large groups of people passing by in the fields from time to time. On ordinary days, there are many carriages passing on the official road, but these days there are many more than usual, and no one cares.

Now, after hearing what Yang Lizheng said, he believed it almost completely, but he still held a glimmer of hope in his heart and was unwilling to believe it.

"How is this possible!?"

"Why didn't I hear any news?"

The village chief glanced coldly at the people who were talking, then looked at Yang Lizheng with a smile, "Are you serious?"

"If it's not true, why would we leave our homeland and endure this suffering? Old brother, I will tell you one more truth."

"When we came from Dongtu County and passed through Fushun County, Fushun County had already closed the city gates to prevent the mob from coming."

Every word Yang Lizheng said made their hearts tremble.

"Brother, you have to make plans early."

Yang Lizheng said no more. Some things should be stopped at the right time. As for what choices they make afterwards, it is their own business. You cannot dominate others.

The village chief bowed to Yang Lizheng and said, "Thank you for your reminder, brother."

They had to go back to discuss something, so they left in a hurry without staying for long.

Su Baozhu came closer to Su Yin and asked, "Do you think they will believe it?"

“I don’t know.”

Maybe you believe it, maybe you don’t, just like Xinghua Village and Lijia Village are the best examples.

If you believe, there is a glimmer of hope.

If you don't believe it, the butcher's knife will come.

After a short rest, the team set out again and arrived at the border of Yongqing County in the evening.

Yang Lizheng was looking at the boundary marker. There were many abandoned tea sheds on both sides of the official road. There was nothing in the sheds except dead leaves.

"Let's rest here tonight and try to get into the city early tomorrow morning."

As soon as they heard the call for a break, everyone pushed their cars to the side of the road.

Su Yin led her own mule cart, tied the mule under a tree, and fed and gave the mule water.

Su Baozhu went to the woods behind to look for firewood, while her mother was busy building a fire for cooking.

Yang Lizheng discussed tomorrow's matters with several people in charge.
