Chapter 44 Entering the City

Su Yin's family did not delay. They pulled the mule cart and lined up with their three uncles' families to go into the city.

Also entering the city with them were Yang the Butcher, Yang Dashu, Madam Xu, as well as the eldest cousin, the second cousin and ten other families.

To enter Yongqing County, everyone must pay a two-cent entrance fee. The price is the same for both adults and children.

While queuing to enter the city, my eldest cousin's mother-in-law, Old Lady Zhang, looked very unhappy and kept muttering to herself.

"Why go into the city today? It's not worth it. We have to pay to stay in an inn."

"My in-laws are really something. Why can't we live outside?"

"Say less." My eldest cousin's father-in-law, Old Man Zhang, shouted.

Old Lady Zhang was still not giving in. "I can't say a word. There are more than a dozen people in our family, big and small. We eat and drink every day, and everything costs money. We only have so little money, how can we spare the money to stay in an inn?"

My cousin Yang Shuixian looked very unhappy.

She knew in her heart that her mother-in-law said this to her parents, simply wanting them to help pay the rent for the whole family.

She was a married daughter, she couldn't open her mouth, nor did she have the face to do so. She seemed not to hear what her mother-in-law said and just pretended to be dead.

Seeing that her daughter-in-law didn't say anything, Old Lady Zhang continued to nag until her eldest cousin's husband, Zhang Liangtian, spoke up, "Mom, if you really don't want to go to the city, that's fine, we won't go to the city."

As soon as her son opened his mouth, Old Mrs. Zhang immediately shut her mouth and looked at her husband and son with hatred. She felt that both of them were heartless and only cared about their daughter-in-law and didn't care about her at all.

Yang Shuixian saw that her mother-in-law was unhappy, so she didn't try to comfort her.

Zhang Liangtian patted her hands and said, "Don't take it to heart. My mother is just like that. Tell your father-in-law and mother-in-law later, and don't let them take it to heart."

"I understand." Yang Shuixian held his hand.

If it weren't for the caring partner next to her and the occasional help from her father-in-law, she doesn't know how she would have gotten through the day.

Old Mrs. Zhang's voice was loud and Su Yin could hear it clearly.

Su's mother lowered her voice and sighed, "Your eldest cousin's mother-in-law is not easy to get along with. When you find a husband for you in the future, I will definitely find one with kind and amiable parents-in-law."

Su Yin was numb, "Mom, your thoughts are so broad."

"What? What what what what?" Su's mother looked confused and couldn't understand the words that came out of her daughter's mouth.

"I'm still young, don't think too much."

"Not anymore. If not...it's time for you to meet someone else."

Su Yin quickly pulled the shield and said, "Mom, if we talk about getting married, my aunt is ahead of me. My aunt hasn't married yet, so how can it be my turn?"

Su Baozhu, who was innocently caught in the crossfire, glared at the unkind girl.

Mother Su looked at Su Baozhu and said, "Baozhu, don't worry, sister-in-law will definitely find a good family for you in the future."

Su Baozhu: “…”

While the three of them were chatting, it was their turn.

The leading officer glanced at the three people and said, "Three people, nine cents."

Su Baozhu said directly, "Officer, you have calculated wrongly. For the three of us, it should be six cents."

The officer sneered, "I said nine cents, nine cents. Oh, no, it's fifteen cents now."

Su Baozhu was infuriated by the other party's shamelessness. She wanted to say something but was stopped by Su Yin.

She walked forward and handed the fifteen cents to the man with a smile, "Sir, you've worked hard."

When the gatekeeper saw that the number was correct, he did not make things difficult for them and let them pass.

With this group of people like them, my uncle and his friends would give the other party whatever amount the other party asked for. Basically, they would add a copper coin to the two cents per person.

As soon as they entered the city, Su Baozhu said angrily: "That man is clearly trying to extort money. How despicable."

This girl is still very inexperienced. She has never seen what it means to extort money or to embarrass others.

They are still quite honest.

"This is already very good. When you meet a real official who extorts money in the future, you will understand."

Su Baozhu's eyes widened, "Isn't this too much?"

"Well, you'll know later. But I don't really want you to see it."

If you see it, it means they are in trouble.

The county seat of Yongqing County was much larger than Dongtu County where they were located. Perhaps because it was near evening and the city gates were about to close, there were not many pedestrians on the streets and many vendors began to close their stalls one after another.

Su Yin saw a meat bun stall not far away and asked Su Baozhu to keep an eye on the luggage.

"Boss, give me ten big meat buns."

"Okay! One bun, twenty-two coins. Ten buns, a total of two coins and twenty coins." The boss seemed to be afraid that she would find it too expensive, so he deliberately said: "My meat buns have a thin skin and a lot of fillings. There is a lot of meat inside."

Twenty-two coins, this price is a few coins higher than Dongtu County. I don’t know if it is due to the recent increase in grain prices, or if Yongqing County is more expensive than Dongtu County. [Note 1]

Su Yin readily gave the boss two coins and twenty cents, picked up a meat bun and took a bite. It was just as the boss said, with a thin skin and rich fillings. The meat juice overflowed when she took a bite, and it tasted delicious.

"Boss, I want to ask you something. Which shoe store in the city is affordable? Is the boss honest?"

She ate the meat bun while trying to find out the news.

The owner of the steamed bun shop was a little surprised, as if he didn't expect a little girl to buy ten meat buns at once. He didn't ask about the inn, but asked about the foot shop instead.

Although both foot shops and inns are places for accommodation and meals, there are huge differences between them.

The foot inn is small in scale and only provides simple food and accommodation.

The inns are large in scale, have many types of rooms, good food, and some even have entertainment programs.
