The bailiff nodded, then called the jailer to go out together.
Xu Wu looked at the two guards behind her and asked warily, "What do you want to do by sending them away?" Do you want to beat them up?
Xu Jiang also said to the two guards: "Wait for me at the door."
The two looked at each other and then nodded.
Guard Xue said, "Call us if you need anything."
After saying that, they retreated to the door.
After the two men had gone far away, Xu Jiang spoke to the two men in the cell, "Did Wu come to see you? Why, after hearing a few words from him, are you trying to change your confession?"
Before Xu Wu could say anything, Xu Twelve spoke first: "How did you know?"
Xu Jiang glanced at him and said, "Ask the jailer."
Xu Wu slapped Xu Twelve again and said, "You have no right to speak here. Get out of here."
Xu Wu had been upset for several days and had no place to vent his anger, so he took it out on him. Over time, he couldn't help but feel resentful.
Having let off some steam, Xu Wu felt much better and asked Xu Jiang, "What on earth did you come here for today?"
Xu Jiang's peripheral vision fell on Xu Twelve, and she said calmly, "The chief clerk asked me to mediate with you."
"Mediation?" Xu Wu was happy at first, but then he remembered what Manager Wu said. If he insisted on overturning the verdict, then Xu Si could come out to redress their grievances, as long as they dragged on the case, the longer the better.
If they won, Xu Jiang's property would be theirs. Even if they lost the case in the end, they could redeem their sentences and give them a large sum of money to send them back home.
By this calculation, apart from getting beaten, he didn't lose anything anyway.
Thinking of this, Xu Wu took two steps back, crossed his arms and said, "We won't mediate with you."
"I don't want to mediate with you. If possible, I would rather never see you again in my life and let you die."
Xu Jiang's words were filled with hidden resentment. "I agreed to talk to you, but only because I was grateful for the care the county magistrate and the chief clerk had given me, and I didn't want to cause them any trouble."
Seeing her coming to ask for peace, Xu Wu and Xu Twelve felt very happy.
Xu Twelve couldn't help but say, "If I had known this would happen, I wouldn't have done it in the first place." If she had redeemed herself in the first place, how could this have happened?
Xu Jiang's eyes were sharp, as if they wanted to see through him, "Yes, if I had known this would happen, I wouldn't have done it in the first place."
Xu Twelve looked away, not daring to meet her gaze.
Xu Wudao said coldly, "Don't bother talking to us. I won't reconcile with you no matter what."
Xu Jiang turned to him and suddenly laughed a few times.
Xu Wu frowned, "Are you crazy? What are you laughing at?"
"I'm happy. Seeing the Xu family's roots about to be wiped out in your hands, I'm relieved."
Xu Wu angrily said, "What nonsense are you talking about?"
Xu Jiang suppressed her smile and stared at him with a piercing gaze. "It's you who are unwilling to mediate. Even if the county magistrate and the chief clerk come to a fight, I can't be blamed. As for this lawsuit, you know you can't win, and you're just trying to buy time with me. Unfortunately, you've miscalculated. I, Xu Jiang, have endured these past eight years, so I don't mind another month or two."
"As long as you die, I will be completely free. I won't have to worry about this for the rest of my life, and I won't have to be entangled with the Xu family." She then said sarcastically, "Speaking of which, I have to thank the Zhou family and that headmaster Wu."
Xu Wu hesitated, "What do you mean?"
"It's a blessing that people don't know they're going to die." Xu Jiang gave him a sympathetic look, then turned and walked away. "After all, we were once of the same clan. I won't let you die in the river like Feng Miao did. Rest assured."
Seeing her walk away, Xu Wu became anxious and shouted, "Xu Jiang, come back! Tell me what you mean."
Xu Jiang paused, her voice drifting faintly through the dark corridor of the prison, "I heard that you were the ones who found Feng Miao's body. Why didn't he tell you how he died?"
Knowing she was cunning and had been fooled before, Xu Wu said cautiously, "Don't try to deceive us. Even the government hasn't found out the cause of his death, how would you know?"
"It's not that the government can't find out the cause of his death, it's that they haven't caught the murderer. You just keep crying out for justice and overturning the case. When you meet Xu Si, you will know how Feng Miao died, but... it will be too late by then." As she said this, she laughed twice more and walked away.
"People die for money, but I'm afraid you'll get money but not have the life to enjoy it."
The memory of Feng Miao's death flashed through Xu Twelve's mind, frightening him so much that he broke out in a cold sweat. He hurriedly shouted to Xu Jiang, "Miss! Miss, I won't change my statement! I'm willing to mediate with you!"
After all, he is not after money like the Fourth and Fifth Masters. He just wants to be free.
Now, as long as he obeyed Xu Jiang and did not reopen the case, Xu Wu, as a wanted criminal, would be unable to do anything to him even if he had his indenture. After figuring this out, Xu Twelve decided to go all out.
Seeing Xu Jiang had reached the end of the corridor, he eagerly slapped the wooden fence and shouted, "As long as you redeem my sentence, I will do anything you say!"
Xu Wu was so angry that his nose almost twisted. He stepped forward, pulled Xu Twelve over, and knocked him to the ground with a fierce punch. "How dare you betray your master?"
If it weren't for him, he and his fourth brother wouldn't have ended up like this.
Xu Twelve clutched his stomach and said in agony, "Fifth Master, my life is my life too. I don't want to die! Then, Feng Miao, you've seen it too. I don't want to die in obscurity, nor do I want my body to be left exposed in the wilderness."
Now that he can negotiate terms with Xu Jiang, why doesn't he find a way to survive?
Besides, he still had a trump card in his hand. As long as he went out to make an exchange with Xu Jiang, he might be able to use her to help him escape from citizenship.
"Think it over carefully." Xu Jiang came back without knowing when. "I'll only give you this one chance."
