Xu Jiang ultimately decided to redeem Xu Wu's sentence. According to the chief clerk's advice, it was best to keep the person in her own hands. If he were redeemed by someone with ulterior motives, there might be more trouble.
However, this matter was not publicized. The county magistrate planned to use a trick to lure the snake out of its hole, and wait for Xu Si to go to the government office to appeal for justice, and then arrest him in one fell swoop.
At that time, the crime he committed, in addition to the attempted blackmail of Xu Jiang, was also the crime of slandering the government. He would be punished for both crimes and would have a hard time.
The plots were against him time and time again, and he, the county magistrate, was not someone who could be easily bullied.
After Xu Jiang completed the redemption procedures, she temporarily kept Xu Wu and Xu Twelve in the county government office as bait. When she walked out of the county government office and got on the carriage, Guards Zhu and Xue heard a loud "bang" coming from the carriage.
That was the sound of Xu Jiang hitting the car wall.
The two looked at each other and sighed.
When the carriage was halfway there, they saw Shopkeeper Wang whipping his donkey towards them. He quickly pulled the reins and asked anxiously, "What's going on?"
Guard Xue saw that he was covered in mud and had scratches on his face. "It's done. But you, how did this happen?"
Shopkeeper Wang paused, then waved his hand and said, "Let's talk about it later."
Xu Jiang heard his voice and hurriedly lifted the carriage curtain. Seeing the miserable state of Shopkeeper Wang, her heart tightened slightly. She asked, "Brother, what happened?"
Seeing her red eyes, Shopkeeper Wang knew she had been crying, and his heart ached. "It was just a car overturn, nothing serious." Then he asked, "What did the government say? Do you still need me to testify?"
"No need, it's already been taken care of." Xu Jiang shook his head, then asked with concern, "How did you flip over? Are you hurt anywhere?"
"It's nothing serious. I just scraped my face when I fell. It will be fine in a couple of days." Shopkeeper Wang looked around at the people around him and said, "This is not the place to talk. Let's go back and talk."
Xu Jiang nodded, "Alright."
In Huailiu Lane, Yinyin and Liang Mo were guarding the door. When they saw Manager Wang and Xu Jiang coming back, they hurried to greet them.
When the neighbors heard the noise, they all looked out from the cracks in their doors.
"Sister Xu, are you okay?" Yin Yin went forward to help her, but felt her hand was cold.
"I'm fine." Xu Jiang smiled at her. Seeing that she was pouting, he pinched her face and said soothingly, "I'm really fine."
Liang Mo gave Guard Xue and Guard Zhu a searching look, and they both nodded at him. He finally felt relieved, and then went to help Shopkeeper Wang.
"Brother Wang, are you okay?" I saw him driving the ox cart back in a mess before. When I asked him, I found out that the cart had overturned. When he heard that someone from the government office was looking for Xu Jiang, he didn't even change his clothes and ran away with the donkey.
Shopkeeper Wang landed, patted his chest, and said loudly, "I'm fine." Then he asked, "By the way, where's the ox cart?"
The shop assistant came forward and said, "It's been repaired and I've taken it back. I gave you an extra hundred coins as compensation for wear and tear."
"Of course I should."
Xu Jiang said to Shopkeeper Wang, "Brother, go back and change your clothes first and take care of your wound. I've made some tea and am waiting for you."
"Okay." Manager Wang handed the donkey to the clerk and walked into the yard.
Guards Xue and Zhu went to stop the carriage, and Xu Jiang, Liang Mo and Yin Yin went into the shop.
When the neighbors saw this, they closed their doors quietly.
After Xu Jiang entered the room, she saw that the fans originally placed on the table had been moved to the high shelf. She sighed at first, and then smiled.
Yin Yin said awkwardly, "They're just getting in the way on the table."
Xu Jiang patted her head and said, "Then give it to her in a few days."
"They're like that... and they still want to send it?"
"No one requires them to help. They don't owe me anything, and there's no need for them to cause trouble for someone like me who has nothing to do with them."
"But Shopkeeper Wang, Liang Mo, and I are not afraid of trouble."
"That's because relationships between people vary, and friendships can be deep or shallow. Shopkeeper Wang is my elder brother, Liang Mo is my half-disciple, and you're family, so naturally you share my anxieties and pains. But they're neighbors, and neighbors are supposed to hang out together, have fun together, and lend a hand to each other. We should reciprocate, but we shouldn't take things for granted."
Xu Jiang recalled the incident that had happened to Shopkeeper Wang today, and guessed about 70% of the answer. "They have already helped me a lot. If I really disturb their peaceful life because of me, that would be a sin."
"Oh." Yin Yin couldn't help but lower her head after hearing this.
Xu Jiang patted her hand. "I know you're worried about me. Look, I'm back safe and sound." Then she added, "Is there any water on the stove? I'm thirsty and would like to have a drink."
"Yes, I'll get it right away." When Yin Yin heard her say she was thirsty, she hurried to get some water.
Xu Jiang went to find tea sets.
Liang Mo followed her and asked, "Boss, what does the government say about this?"
"Wait a moment, I'll tell you when my brother comes over." Then he asked, "Has anyone else come to visit after I left?"
"Some people have come to buy books and paper. They are all regular customers."
"That's good. These days, you should be more careful when going to and from work. It's best to ride a donkey and don't get delayed on the road."
"I see."
The two of them placed the teacups on the table, Yinyin brought water, Xu Jiang brewed a few cups of Yulu tea, and also gave a bowl to each of the two guards outside.
Clear your mind and get rid of restlessness.
As soon as the tea was ready, Manager Wang came over, having changed his clothes and applied medicine to the scratches on his face.
He boasted, "My wife personally applied the medicine for me. She knew I fell and she was keeping an eye on me."
That one sentence dispelled Xu Jiang's worries, and she couldn't help but burst out laughing. She hurriedly said, "Hurry up and sit down. Have some tea." Then she said to Liang Mo and Yin Yin, "You sit down too."
