Chapter 174 One Hundred and Seventy-Four

After recording the confession and coming out of the government office, Xu Jiang bowed and saluted to everyone.

"Thank you all for your help. Xu Jiang is very grateful."

After this incident, the neighbors felt relieved.

"Manager Xu, you're welcome. We all live on the same street and alley. If this fire breaks out, we'll all be affected."

"That's right. Besides, we are all neighbors, so it's only natural for us to lend a hand and help each other."

"It's not like we can just drink the tea in your bookstore for free, right?"

"And we can't just listen to Guard Xue and Guard Zhu's stories for nothing."

With just a few words from each person, the grudge was cleared.

Xu Jiang smiled and said, "When the bookshop is tidied up, I'll invite everyone to come have tea, relax, and listen to stories."

"That's great. I haven't had any entertainment these past few days, and I always feel like something is missing."

"That's right, that's right."

Shopkeeper Wang said, "I still have some buckwheat tea."

Yin Yin also smiled and thought to herself that she would take the fan down when she got home and deliver it door to door personally tomorrow.

Everyone was chatting and laughing as they headed towards Yonghefang. When they reached the Yonghefang intersection, Xu Jiang, realizing there was still some time to go, was about to change course and head to the West Market to visit Uncle Jackal, when she heard Shopkeeper Wang call out, "Liang Mo, you're back?" Then he asked, "How's Uncle Jackal?"

Xu Jiang and Yin Yin lifted the curtain to look in the direction of the sound, only to see Liang Mo driving a donkey cart coming from another street.

Looking into his cart again, there was no sign of Uncle Jackal except for a few bags of hay.

Yin Yin pouted and asked, "Where's Uncle Jackal? Is he dead?"

Seeing that she was about to cry, Liang Mo quickly said, "No, Manager Zhao took it home for treatment and said it can be cured."

"Really?" Yin Yin stopped crying and patted her chest. "That's good. I was really afraid it would die."

Liang Mo smiled.

"They said that Manager Zhao had a solution." Xu Jiang breathed a sigh of relief and asked, "Did he also send this fodder?"

Liang Mo nodded. "Yes, he heard there was a fire in the shop and the donkey shed was burned down. He was worried that the donkeys had nothing to eat, so he sent some food. He didn't want the money I offered him, but I couldn't refuse, so I had to accept it."

"That's all right. I'll thank him later."

The stubborn donkey snorted with his round belly sticking out.

Xu Jiang's eyes fell on it, and seeing that it had some white ointment applied to its body, she asked, "Is the stupid donkey also injured?"

Liang Mo touched its head and said, "It must have been burned by a falling fire point. Shopkeeper Zhao said it's not a big deal and gave me some ointment. It should be healed in a few days."

"It's my fault for being careless." Xu Jiang felt a little distressed when she saw the stubborn donkey's miserable appearance. "I hope he won't be bald in the future."

"No way." Shopkeeper Zhao didn't say anything.

The stubborn donkey scratched its hooves and snorted, seeming a little dissatisfied.

Liang Mo quickly smoothed his fur, "Even if he's bald, he's still the most majestic donkey."

Xu Jiang and Yin Yin were amused and laughed, and the dark clouds in their hearts dissipated a lot.

Shopkeeper Wang saw that the neighbors had all walked to the front and said to them, "Let's go. The shop still needs to be cleaned up. Don't delay."

Xu Jiang stared at this brother and thought of the two nominal brothers of the Xu family. He couldn't help but feel mixed emotions in his heart, aggrieved and relieved. In the end, he was left with only gratitude in his heart and eyes.

"Well, let's go."

When Xu Jiang returned to the bookstore, she saw Lou Jing and several guards standing at the door, as if waiting for her.

Xu Jiang got off the car and hurried forward to greet him, "Sir, why are you here?"

She always changes her husband when she is outside.

"This is a letter sent by Guard Xue." Seeing that the two girls, one big and one small, looked unhappy, Lou Jing couldn't help but curse the Zhou family's gang of thieves in his heart.

"Are you okay?"

Xu Jiang forced a smile and said, "Not bad." Then he added, "The bookstore is also fine. The loss is not big."

Shopkeeper Wang greeted Lou Jing and knew that they had something to say and didn't want to disturb them, so he persuaded the neighbors to disperse and went home to wash and change clothes. He was covered in dust and sweat and felt very uncomfortable.

When I got home and saw that my wife had prepared hot water and clothes, I felt so happy.

Xu Jiang invited Lou Jing to sit inside, but Lou Jing waved his hand and walked to the backyard.

The guards and Liang Mo were helping to clean up the mess, and Yin Yin also helped sweep the floor with a broom. The filth left by the burning was quickly cleaned up, leaving only black marks on the wall caused by fire and smoke.

"These evil bastards are so cruel! How dare they set fire in broad daylight! They have absolutely no respect for the law and are so bold." Even though Lou Jing was well-educated, he couldn't help but curse when he thought about the danger of this matter.

"Although I expected them to cause trouble, I never imagined they would be so audacious and reckless, regardless of the consequences." It seemed they truly hated her to the core and didn't want her bookshop to continue operating. "This time, we have to thank Yinyin and the neighbors, otherwise the consequences would be disastrous."

Lou Jing watched Yin Yin busying around and praised her, saying, "She may seem silly on a normal day, but she's actually quite reliable in a critical moment. Go back and ask her mistress to commend her." He added, "The neighbors should also each prepare a gift to thank them for their help in saving your bookshop."

Xu Jiang replied, "Of course I will prepare it tomorrow."

Lou Jing studied her face, which looked a little haggard, and soothed her, "It's good that this incident has happened. It's a cause for alarm to the authorities, and they won't dare to attack you again."

"Well, just now at the county office, the chief clerk said that this arson case will be handled together with Xu Si's case. I guess the Zhou family will have no time to bother me again." After saying this, Xu Jiang thought for a moment and then asked, "Did the county office get an order from higher authorities to investigate the Zhou family?"

Although Zhou Huai was dismissed from his post, his foundation was still there. In the past, the county government would not dare to target him so blatantly.

Lou Jing nodded. "After the case is reviewed, it will be submitted to the Dali Temple. The Zhou family has a history of two crimes, and now they have committed two crimes in a row. Even the Great Luo Immortal cannot save them."
