Xu Jiang said, "Congratulations, Madam, on your better health."
"Of course, of course." Wan Qingmiao pointed to the maid who had just delivered the message and instructed, "Go to the kitchen and tell them to prepare a few tables for the feast. Let's have fun together as a family."
"Yes." The maid also went happily.
Xu Jiang said to Wan Qingmiao, "Madam is awake, let's go check on her."
"Really?" Wan Qingmiao hurriedly stepped into the yard and strode into the room.
Shan Bo couldn't enter the courtyard, so he just asked Xu Jiang to tell Madam Wan that he was fine, and then he went to the outer courtyard to look for the four children he had brought out. After all, they were in someone else's home, so he had to keep a close eye on them, making sure they didn't break the rules, make a fool of themselves, and bring shame to the Lou family.
Xu Jiang entered the house carrying a pomegranate and saw the mother and son talking, so she stood at the door for a while.
Liu Mei also stayed beside her and did not urge her. She waited until the two people in the room had almost finished talking before she coughed lightly to attract their attention.
Xizhi stood up and Wan Qingmiao immediately supported her. She took two steps towards Xu Jiang, but suddenly stopped, seeming a little at a loss.
She had been in a daze these days. Although she could feel Xu Jiang standing by her side, she could not speak to him. She wanted to wake up but couldn't.
She heard Xu Jiang chattering a lot in her ear.
She talked about the fourteen years she spent with Xu Yuan, her travels around, her opening of a bookstore in the capital... and so on.
Xu Jiang was like a spring, tirelessly soaking the joyful past into her heart bit by bit, smoothing out the cracked scars and allowing them to heal bit by bit.
Xizhi had one good dream after another, which was rare.
But now that I have woken up and am facing her in person, I want to get closer to her, but I feel timid.
Isn’t Xu Jiang the same?
Liu Mei gently pushed Xu Jiang, and Wan Qingmiao also helped her mother forward. Xu Jiang came back to her senses, then walked into the house with a smile and said to Madam Wan, "Madam, you're awake. Are you feeling better?"
Mrs. Wan stared at her blankly without saying anything.
Xu Jiang placed the pomegranates on a flower table nearby, picked out the reddest and largest one, and held it before Madam Wan, asking, "Would you like some? I'll peel it for you."
Madam Wan looked down at Shi Liu again, her eyes also flushed with the bright red color, and nodded, "Okay."
Wan Qingmiao said sourly, "I just talked to my mother for so long, but she ignored me. As soon as my sister came, she agreed. It's like she threw her son over the wall when she had a daughter."
He kept calling her "sister" on the left and "daughter" on the right, leaving both of them stunned.
Madam Wan stared at Xu Jiang, a hint of anticipation in her eyes.
Xu Jiang freed one hand to hold her, led her to the table, and said, "Mother, please sit down first. I will peel the pomegranate."
Liu Mei smiled and said quickly, "I'll go get the bowl."
Wan Qingmiao was also very satisfied. He then snatched the pomegranate from Xu Jiang's hand, winked at her, and said, "I'm the best at peeling pomegranates. I'll do it. Sister, just stay with mother."
Xu Jiang understood what he meant, so she pulled over a stool and sat next to Madam Wan, watching him peel the pomegranate.
Madam Wan held her hand, stared at her intently, stroked her over and over again, looked at her inch by inch, as if she could never touch enough and could never look at enough.
Xu Jiang noticed Madam Wan's uneasiness and fear, so she held her hand and gently patted the back of her hand to comfort her.
Wan Qingmiao was indeed an expert at peeling pomegranates. He made a few cuts along the skin, then gently cracked it open, revealing the rosy, glistening seeds. Liu Mei came over with a white porcelain plum blossom bowl, and he placed the seeds into the bowl. The red and white complemented each other beautifully.
Xu Jiang reached out and took a few and fed them to Madam Wan's mouth, and asked, "Mother, try it."
Madam Wan tasted a few from her hand and immediately squinted her eyes because of the sourness. Seeing this, Xu Jiang also tasted a few and her eyes immediately narrowed into two crescents. The expressions of the mother and daughter were exactly the same.
Liu Mei gritted her teeth at the sight, then swallowed hard and asked, "Is it really that sour? It looks quite red."
Wan Qingmiao smiled and said, "It's not red yet. It needs to be redder to be sweet. If you eat it now, you can just look at the color and taste the freshness."
She looked at the half-bowl of crystal clear pomegranate seeds and felt worried. She couldn't stand sour food either. "Wouldn't it be a waste if I couldn't finish it?"
Xu Jiang's mouth recovered from the taste and she hurriedly stood up to pour a glass of warm water for Madam Wan to clean her mouth. She then said to Liu Mei, "Sister Mei, I remember there's half a can of sugarcane juice on the low table. Pickle it and then eat it. It will taste better."
"That's a good idea." Liu Mei stroked her hand and went to find the half can of sugarcane juice. She also took out two porcelain spoons for mixing and eating.
"Let me do it." Fearing that she would lose control, Xu Jiang took the sugarcane juice and planned to do it herself. Seeing that her mother was still holding her hand and refused to let go, she took out a spoon and handed it to her. "Mother, I will pour the sugarcane juice and you can mix it."
Mrs. Wan was stunned for a moment holding the spoon, then nodded.
So, with Wan Qingmiao peeling the seeds, Xu Jiang pouring the sugarcane juice, and Madam Wan mixing it, the three of them worked together and made a bowl of red and sweet candied pomegranates.
Xu Jiang smiled and said, "Isn't it okay to eat now?"
Madam Wan glanced at her, then carefully scooped a spoonful and held it to her mouth, "A Jiang...try it."
Everyone was stunned and stared at Madam Wan.
Xu Jiang quickly came back to her senses, then took it in her mouth with a smile, and nodded, saying, "It's sweet."
Mrs. Wan smiled knowingly.
Wan Qingmiao was delighted to see this, but pretended to be unhappy and said, "Why doesn't mother feed me?"
Mrs. Wan then changed the spoon, scooped a spoonful and put it to his mouth, "A Miao, try it too."
Wan Qingmiao took it with satisfaction and said, "It's really sweet."
