Over the years, he'd earned a reputation as a scoundrel in the capital, causing many, including the couple, to overlook the fact that he was a real person. Seeing the coffins today, and seeing Lou Yunchun's exhausted and haggard appearance, Lou Jing experienced for the first time the worry and fear a typical father feels for his son.
He realized so clearly that his son was just a human being, a human being who could get hurt and die.
Mrs. Lou sensed her husband's fear and hugged him tightly, patting his back to comfort him. "He's back safely."
"Well, luckily he came back safely." Lou Jing breathed a sigh of relief, and everything was about to end.
Mrs. Lou patted his shoulder and comforted him, "Good fortune will come to those who are lucky."
Lou Jing let her go and said, "Thanks to Madam's daily incense burning and sincere worship of the Three Pure Ones, the Three Pure Ones have blessed our son's safe return."
Seeing that he had regained his spirits, Madam Lou smiled slightly, and then said, "Let's go to the temple to serve incense on the 15th."
"Okay." Mid-Autumn Festival was a holiday, so I had some free time. "Let's go fulfill our vow."
"We went to pray for the salvation of the three children who died in the war."
Lou Jing paused, put away his smile, and nodded solemnly, "It's my duty."
It was not until the hour of Hai that Lou Yunchun came out of the imperial city. Shangguan saw that he was tired and knew that he was injured, so he did not let him ride a horse. Instead, he forced him to sit in his own carriage and personally sent him back to Zhaoxingfang.
When he arrived at the door of Lou's house, he saw Lou Jing and several servants waiting at the door.
Lou Jing stepped forward and thanked the Dali Temple official, saying, "Thank you for bringing my son back. We've prepared a feast. Why don't you stay for a couple of drinks?"
The Dali Temple Minister waved his hand and said, "I won't disturb your family reunion." Then he smiled and said, "Besides, there are people waiting for you at home. If you go back any later, I'm afraid they will be waiting anxiously."
Lou Jing smiled and said, "Then I won't stay any longer."
Lou Yunchun bowed and said, "Thank you for seeing me off, sir."
The Dali Temple official said, "Rest at home tomorrow. I'm here at the yamen, so don't worry."
Lou Yunchun replied: "Yes."
"Let's go, you guys should go too." The Dali Temple Minister glanced at the brightly lit courtyard and said, "It's a good family to have some fun together."
"Take care, sir."
After sending the people away, the father and son walked in together. Lou Jing took the willow branches and pomelo leaves from the servant's hand, dipped them in water and sprinkled Lou Yunchun all over his body before leading him into the garden.
The two of them went straight to the back house. The servants and maids greeted them along the way, and many of them wiped their tears. Lou Yunchun's personal servant followed them silently, wiping his face with his sleeves from time to time.
When he arrived at the backyard, Madam Lou and Yin Yin were standing at the entrance of the corridor waiting. When she saw him coming, Yin Yin burst into tears, "Master, you are finally back!"
Her crying made everyone laugh.
Lou Yunchun also raised his lips and replied, "Yes, I'm back." Then he stepped forward and knelt before Madam Lou, "Mother."
Mrs. Lou quickly helped him up and looked at him carefully with tears in her eyes. She found that he was just as Lou Jing had said, thinner and darker.
She touched his face and said, "It's good that you're back, it's good that you're back."
"Let's not stand here anymore, let's go inside and talk." Lou Jing supported the two of them, then said to Lou Yunchun, "There's hot water in your room. Go take a shower and change your clothes first. Your mother and I will be waiting for you inside."
Lou Yunchun didn't move. He looked around, and the smile in his eyes was extinguished by the bright lights.
"Father, Mother, where is Ajahn?"
