Chapter 256

"It's really refreshing."

Lou Yunchun asked, "Why did you call me here?"

"I have just written an article and would like to ask for your advice." Zhao Xiu took out a piece of paper from a pile of miscellaneous papers and threw it to Lou Yunchun.

Lou Yunchun raised his hand to take it, then frowned and said, "Since it's a waste manuscript, why let me read it?"

Zhao Xiu said, "The writing at the end was even worse, so I wanted to show you where the problem lies."

Lou Yunchun walked in holding a ball of paper and then stared at him.

"What's wrong?"

"Give up your seat."

The only mat in the cell was under Zhao Xiu's butt.

"You're so picky." Zhao Xiu moved aside, pulled out another pile of his own writings to use as a cushion, and then said to the jailer, "Excuse me, bring your master a clean bowl. I'll treat him to a drink."

Lou Yunchun asked, "Where do you get the money to buy wine?" Zhao Xiu gave most of his money to Mu Cong for travel expenses, and there was very little left after buying paper, ink and books.

Zhao Xiu pointed to the article under his butt and said, "I sold it for a change."

Yun Chun suddenly didn't want to drink anymore in the restaurant.

The jailer brought a bowl and Zhao Xiu poured some for Lou Yunchun. The two of them drank and talked. As they drank more, their thoughts became clearer.

"So that's how it is. You're really an experienced person." Zhao Xiu took the wrinkled paper, scooped up the unfinished wine from Lou Yunchun to make ink, and then began to write furiously.

Seeing this, Lou Yunchun stopped disturbing him and got up to leave.

The jailer noticed that he was feeling a little dizzy and asked, "Are you drunk, sir?"

"No." He didn't drink much of Zhao Xiu's wine. He just had a smell of alcohol in his head. He would be fine after some fresh air.

When he walked out of the cell, Zhao Xiu said from behind, "Brother Lou, congratulations, lovers finally get married."

Lou Yunchun paused, "Thank you very much."

"When you get married, don't forget to give me a sip of wedding wine."

"Yours is indispensable."

After Lou Yunchun left, Zhao Xiu stroked his chin and thought, that pair of shoes is quite good. When he is released from prison, he will get a pair for him to wear.

It was almost dusk when Lou Yunchun came out of the Dali Temple. When the horse attendant brought his horse and he was about to leave, he saw a patrol guard leading a man towards him. The man had his head down and his back was hunched, and his face could not be seen clearly.

The patrol officer stepped forward and asked, "Sir, are you off duty?"

"Hmm." Lou Yunchun asked the person behind him, "Who is this? What did they do wrong?"

"Sir, don't you recognize me? This is Xu Dang. He hasn't committed any crime. I was just taken to the county government office to give a confession." The patrolman complained, "This confession has delayed me for a whole day. Old Duan and his disloyal gang just abandoned me after escorting him."

"What confession?"

"A murder case," the patrolman said, "his brother killed someone and is currently being held at the county government office. The county government knew he was there, so they sent us over to identify him."

"His brother? Xu Hao?" Lou Yunchun frowned. "Who did he harm?"

"He murdered his master, a man named Xu Zhong. It's said he broke his hands and feet, tied him up in a rented room, and it's unclear whether he starved to death or died from his wounds. He rotted and stank, and the neighbors discovered him and reported him to the authorities." The patrolman had seen the corpse today, and now he felt nauseous just thinking about it. It took him a long while to suppress the foul breath in his chest. "He was also good at hiding. The county officials spent over half a month searching for him before they caught him in a gambling den outside the city."

Lou Yunchun asked, "Besides him, did the county government find someone else to take the confession?"

The patrolman shook his head. "No, his confession is enough. The evidence is irrefutable, and there's no room for quibbling. Plus, the criminal confessed readily, so there's no need to look for anyone else."

Xu Dang's mind was a mess due to Xu Hao's insults and Xu Twelve's death. When he heard someone asking about it, he came back to his senses from his fear and confusion. He looked up and saw that the man looked familiar. After a closer look, he recognized that this was the Shaoqing, Xu Jiang's lover.

"Sir." Xu Dang hurriedly stepped forward and knelt before Lou Yunchun, "Please help save my fourth brother."

Seeing Xu Dang like this, the patrolman finally came to his senses and cursed himself for being so stupid. He shouldn't have told the master about this, at least not now. He pulled Xu Dang up and scolded him, "Even if you're asking for help, you better have eyes. Let's go back to the stable. You haven't finished your work for the day yet!"

He doesn't want to go back to the stable! Xu Dang dug himself into the ground, letting the patrolman pull him but refusing to get up. "With just one word from you, sir, I can spare his life. I hope you will show me mercy."

"He has broken the law and should be convicted and punished by the government." Lou Yunchun lowered his eyes and said, "If you really want to save him, you can take the blame for him."

"This..." Xu Dang was speechless.

Lou Yunchun said to the patrol guard, "Take him back and keep a close eye on him."

"Yes." The patrolman pulled the man up and dragged Xu Dang inside.

"I know!" Xu Dang roared, "I know Xu Jiang..."

Lou Yunchun turned around, and his cold gaze pierced into his throat, cutting off his words.

"Don't let me hear her name from your mouth again, unless you never want to speak again in your life."

Xu Dang shrank his shoulders and dared not say anything.

Lou Yunchun instructed the patrol guards, "Keep a close eye on him. Don't let him run around before his prison term is up."

The patrolman realized that he had done something stupid, so after agreeing, he quickly grabbed the man and ran away.

Lou Yunchun stood there for a while, then walked towards Yonghefang.

If what the patrol officer said is true, Xu Hao's file will be sent to the Dali Temple soon, and it won't be too late to deal with it then. Today is his and A Jiang's wedding day, and he doesn't want her to ruin her mood or bring bad luck.

When they reached Yonghefang, it was still light outside and many people were returning home. The matchmaker's proposal today must have made quite a fuss, so Lou Yunchun didn't want to go there at this time, so he went to Baishi Station in Daixianfang.
