Chapter 39 Thirty-nine Slashes

Xu Jiang stood in front of the straw shed and trained the donkey.

"I should have sold it to you from the beginning. You're greedy, lazy, and stubborn. You can't even walk when you see food. I don't know who gave you this habit."

"You said our nest is a little small, but it can still shelter you from the wind and rain, right? I may be a little poor, but I haven't deprived you of food and drink, right?"

"Why are you so useless? Do you think you are your ancestors just because you have grass and food?"

"If you cheat like this again, I'll peel off your skin and make donkey hide gelatin, and use your flesh to make barbecue. Do you hear me?"

She talked until her mouth was dry, but the donkey didn't even look at her and was just busy digging its nest.

Xu Jiang slapped it on the butt and said, "What are you digging for? A nest of gold or silver is not as good as a nest of grass. After a few visits to the mansion, you've become spoiled."

The donkey ignored her and continued to dig with its hooves. As it dug, it dug out a yellow ball, which scared both it and Xu Jiang. The yellow ball was also rolled around and felt dizzy, staggering from side to side. Xu Jiang took a closer look and saw who else could it be but Yue Nu?

Feelings are taking a nap in the haystack.

Xu Jiang was amused, pointing at Yue Nu and saying to the stubborn donkey, "Look, you don't care, but there are people who do!"

The donkey lashed out at Huang Tuanzi, as if to bite him. It whizzed over to Xu Jiang, tearing several threads from her new dress. Grinning at the scratch, Xu Jiang grabbed the donkey by the scruff of its neck and smacked it on the butt.

"You are also a troublesome thing." After saying that, he didn't bother to care about the stupid donkey anymore and took it to the shop to make tea.

After scolding for so long, she felt thirsty.

Lin Hongchu hadn't left yet. Seeing her coming over with Yue Nu in her arms, she asked, "I've been looking for it all day. Where did it hide?"

"Donkey shed." Xu Jiang handed Yue Nu to her and then went to get the teacup: "Want some?"

Lin Hongchu shook his head, "I couldn't sleep at night after drinking it."

Xu Jiang laughed: "How come you are so sleepy at such a young age?"

"You must always get up and look after your mother."

Xu Jiang's smile faded. As the tea poured into the cup and she waited quietly, she said softly, "I want to find another doctor to see my aunt."

Lin Hongchu paused as she petted the cat and said sadly, "I'm just afraid my father won't agree."

Xu Jiang sighed secretly. This was her concern.

These days she also understood Master Lin's temper. He was a man who was too afraid of owing others, and he was also too arrogant and aloof. He would rather break than bend a bone.

But even if such a bone is not broken in the storms of the court, there is no guarantee that it will not be destroyed by the separation of life and death.

Before accepting your fate, do your best.

Why bother regretting for the rest of your life when you haven't finished your work yet?

Having made up her mind, Xu Jiang said to Lin Hongchu, "Wait at home tomorrow. I'll have Doctor Chen from Qianjin Hall go straight to the academy. Let him see my aunt first. If you can avoid him, do so. We'll discuss the follow-up after the results are in."

Lin Hongchu was silent for a moment, then nodded heavily, "Okay." Then, his eyes reddened again, and he said to Xu Jiang, "Thank you, Master."

"Silly girl."

The tea was delicious. Xu Jiang took a sip and changed the subject, asking, "How many people came to the shop today?"

"I sold a few rolls of paper and some ink, and someone came to borrow a book." After saying this, Lin Hongchu suddenly remembered something, "Oh, I almost forgot, the History Bureau sent someone to deliver the county annals. They are valuable, and I was afraid of losing them, so I left them in your room."

Xu Jiang saw that she looked better and said with a smile, "Okay."

"There's nothing else to say." Lin Hongchu finished speaking and saw Xu Jiang's beaming face. After pondering for a while, he whispered, "Are you happy about the boss going to the banquet at the Lou residence today?"

Xu Jiang smiled but said nothing.

She was anxious, and she took Xu Jiang's hand and asked, "Tell me."

"Can't you see that?" Xu Jiang knocked her on the forehead with his backhand, "Stupid girl."

Lin Hongchu covered his head, and when he saw her smiling as she drank tea, he finally understood and couldn't stop laughing, "That's good, that's good."

Xu Jiang reached out and pinched her face, saying, "Go back. The teacher and aunt are waiting for you to eat."

"Okay." Lin Hongchu packed up his things and was about to leave.

Xu Jiang warned, "Don't forget what I said."

"I remember."

Seeing her running away like a deer, Xu Jiang's smile gradually faded and he let out a faint sigh.

The next day, before opening the door, Xu Jiang went to Qianjinfang to see Doctor Chen to explain the situation. However, Doctor Chen knew Master Lin and without saying anything, he went to see the patient with his medicine box on his back.

Xu Jiang calmed down a little before going back to open the door.

It was not until noon that Lin Hongchu arrived with Doctor Chen.

Xu Jiang quickly invited Doctor Chen into the house and asked Hong Chu to add more tea and water. After everyone was seated and drank the tea, she asked about Mrs. Lin's condition.

Doctor Chen glanced at Lin Hongchu and said, "He is terminally ill and won't have much time left."

really.

Xu Jiang's heart tightened and she quickly looked at Lin Hongchu, but Lin Hongchu was calmer than she had imagined.

Doctor Chen continued, "We can only use medicine to keep her alive through this winter, so she can be born next spring. But that's all."

Xu Jiang slowly exhaled and said in a deep voice, "Bao, use whatever medicine is necessary. I'll pay for it."

Doctor Chen looked at her and said, "It's not your turn."

"You and Master Lin..."

"Have you ever heard of him?"

Xu Jiang nodded.

"He and I were in the same class of examination, and I ranked fourth on the list."

They are the candidates who were squeezed out of the top three!

"After he was dismissed, I resigned from my official position and studied medicine instead. Later, I opened a clinic in Yonghefang."

Xu Jiang thought to himself that the capital city was truly a place full of hidden dragons and crouching tigers.

"I've seen Madam Lin's illness before. She was born with a weak constitution, and then she became even weaker due to the damage she suffered during childbirth. I told her not to overwork herself and to rest more, but I guess she didn't listen."
