Her words made Master Lin unable to hold back any longer. He handed the bowl to Lin Hongchu and said, "Give me a bowl of rice too."
Lin Hongchu went there happily. She served soup not only to Master Lin, but also to Xu Jiang and Lou Yunchun. Mrs. Lin was not supposed to overeat at night, so she would not eat after drinking the soup, so she gave up.
Xu Jiang first took a spoon and scooped a spoonful of soup onto the rice. Then she used her chopsticks to place a piece of fish, dried melon shreds, dried bamboo shoots shreds, and tofu into each bowl. She then returned the bowls and finally gave Mrs. Lin two pieces of tofu to taste.
Master Lin had always loved eating fish, especially small wild river fish, which were tender, fresh, and fragrant. He had his own rules for eating fish: he would eat them from head to tail, and when eating small fish, he would usually eat them with the bones.
He picked up the fish from the bowl and bit off the head. The head was so soft that it melted between his teeth without much chewing. If the head was so tender, let alone the body and meat, the whole fish was in his stomach in the blink of an eye.
Then he ate shredded dried melon and shredded dried bamboo shoots, both of which were soft and tasty, but his favorite was the tofu soaked in soup.
Tofu itself has no taste, but it is because of its tastelessness that it can absorb all kinds of flavors. The whole pot of freshness and fragrance are melted into this tender white tofu, which is very memorable.
Xu Jiang was also eating. She mixed the soup with rice and paired it with ginger duck. The bowl of rice was empty in a short while.
Lou Yunchun was afraid that she would choke, so he served her a bowl of soup, and she smiled back at him.
Lin Hongchu secretly poured himself a glass of wine and sighed with satisfaction after finishing it: "I wish I could make such delicious meals someday."
When everyone heard this, they all shook their heads. It was difficult.
"It's the blessing of the Buddha that you can cook a good meal." Mrs. Lin pinched her nose and took the wine glass.
Lin Hongchu turned to Xu Jiang and begged, "Sister said you would teach me."
Thinking of the pancakes from that day, Xu Jiang nodded in agreement. Since the little girl likes to cook, she should teach her. Otherwise, everyone here will suffer, especially her.
"I can teach you, but let me make it clear first. If it tastes bad, you can eat it yourself, and don't use it to harm me."
Lin Hongchu nodded. As long as Xu Jiang was willing to teach her, that was good. She also wanted to cook a table of delicious dishes for her mother to taste.
Seeing that Master Lin had almost finished eating, Xu Jiang brought up the matter of Lu Zhen becoming his apprentice.
"Pick a suitable date, and once it's set, have the child come and become your disciple."
Master Lin calculated and said, "The eighth day of next month is perfect."
Xu Jiang also calculated and said, "It's a good day. Then I will inform his family and bring him here early on the eighth day of next month."
Master Lin nodded, "Okay."
After setting the date, Xu Jiang and Master Lin also drank a few cups, finishing a jar of Dongyang wine, and it was almost time to end the banquet.
Everyone worked together, some collected the bowls, some cleared the dishes, some wiped the table and swept the floor, some boiled water to wash the dishes, and they didn't stop until the main room and kitchen were clean and tidy.
Finally, Lin Hongchu brewed another pot of tea to soothe everyone's fatigue. Xu Jiang took a sip and found it was not Gaolu but Queshe, so she took a few sips boldly.
After drinking tea, she saw that Mrs. Lin looked tired, so she stood up and said goodbye with Lou Yunchun.
Madam Lin forced herself to be strong and walked the two of them out with her husband and daughter. Before leaving, she took Xu Jiang in her arms and whispered, "Xiaolou is a reliable person. You two must be well."
Xu Jiang held her hand, her heart warmed. "Don't worry, Auntie. Neither he nor I are the kind of people who like to make trouble. It's fine to be quiet like this." Then she added, "You have to be well too, Auntie. Take good care of yourself. Spring is almost here. I heard there's a peach orchard in Long. Let's go there and enjoy the flowers together."
"Okay." Mrs. Lin agreed with a smile, but she felt disappointed in her heart. She didn't know if she could wait until the peach blossoms bloomed again.
She glanced at Lin Qinnian, and remembered that she met him in Taoyuan, and couldn't help but curl up the corners of her mouth.
All these scenes seem to have happened just yesterday.
Master Lin and Lou Yunchun remained silent, but through their interactions, they had gradually developed a liking for this young man.
However, he did not want to show his goodwill too early. He had to let her know that Xu Jiang was not helpless in the capital, so he should not bully her.
As for whether Lou Yunchun's family background was a good match for Xu Jiang, that wasn't something he was considering at the moment. Xu Jiang wasn't settled yet, and her future was uncertain, so he shouldn't tie her down with marriage so early.
Enjoy life while it lasts. Why wait? Follow your heart and live in the present moment. Xu Jiang understood and saw this truth much more clearly than the ordinary people in this world.
Since she only cares about the pleasure of this day and night and is not sure about what will happen in the future, then let's fulfill her wish and congratulate her.
It’s not too late to make the decision for her when she wants to build a nest and start a family.
Master Lin looked back at his wife. Only by truly touching the boundary between life and death could he truly understand the vastness of the universe, the insignificance of human life, and the impermanence of life and death.
There are so many separations in this world, so don’t let down the people around you.
He and his wife were like this, and so was Xu Jiang.
Xu Jiang took the reins from Lin Hongchu and led the horse and donkey cart out onto the street. She then turned around and waved to the three members of the Lin family, "It's late at night and cold. You should hurry back and don't catch a cold."
Lou Yunchun took the lantern from Mrs. Lin and bowed to her and Master Lin before saying goodbye. Finally, he said to the couple, "I'll take A Jiang back. Don't worry."
Master Lin warned, "It's dark and the roads are slippery, so be careful."
Lou Yunchun responded: "Okay."
Xu Jiang got on the donkey cart and said to Lin Hongchu, "You drank tonight, so you can come to work later tomorrow." She pinched her face, which was cold from the wind, and said, "It's very cold. Come in quickly."
"I'll go back right away." Seeing Lou Yunchun coming over, Lin Hongchu waved to them, "Sister, Brother Lou, take care."
After leaving Nanshan Academy, the two of them did not delay and rode back to the bookstore. It was just that the weather was too cold and they did not feel like enjoying the romantic life.
