The five-day deadline agreed upon by Jiang Gu and Lou Yunchun has arrived. Lou Yunchun asked the cavalry of foreign envoys who came to Beijing to pay tribute to send him to Jiangling, and then took a boat down to Furong City.
Jiang Gu ultimately didn't write the list. As Xu Jiang had said, he was already a man without moral integrity and could no longer be heartless and ungrateful. Fortunately, Lou Yunchun didn't force him, which made him look at him with a new perspective, yet also felt a little guilty.
On the day of departure, apart from Xu Jiang and Lou Yunchun, only Xie Hongxing came to see him off. He escaped in disgrace without any fanfare.
Xu Jiang watched Jiang Gu and Xie Hongxing turn their heads every ten steps and cry every five steps, and she couldn't help but press her forehead. Finally, Lou Yunchun couldn't bear it anymore and dragged Jiang Gu into the cavalry and threw him a bag of money.
Jiang Gu clung to Lou Yunchun and cried, "Brother Lou, I can't bear to leave you."
He couldn't bear to leave the capital, Pingkangfang, and his female confidantes.
Lou Yunchun tore him apart, threw him to the leader of the cavalry, paid the leader some compensation, and instructed him to send him to Jiangling. Then he turned around and left without looking back.
Xie Hongxing kept wiping her tears. Xu Jiang saw that her eyes were red and swollen from crying, and thought to herself: This person is really sad.
He consoled her, "Thank you, my lady. There is always a time for separation. Just let it go. Besides, Jiang Xiaoping is not your ideal man. Don't be too sad for him."
Xie Hongxing said, "He's not a good man, but he's a good person. So many sisters in Pingkangfang admire him, not just for his talent or looks, but for his heart."
"What's his intention?" Jiang Gu's heart was as bright as a lotus pod, Xu Jiang didn't understand what his intention was.
"Xiao Ping has a conscience. He knows how to repay kindness, and he never lets anyone down. There was a courtesan whose family was being murdered by an official, and she lured the official to a brothel and assassinated him. He was so angry about the courtesan that he almost ended up in jail, all because the courtesan had taken him in when he was drunk."
The official who was scolded must be Lou Yunchun.
"There are many such cases." Xie Hongxing sighed, "In places like ours, there are few people with consciences, but many who lack them. Although Xiaoping hangs out in various entertainment venues, she always acts out of mutual consent. She pities us, sympathizes with us, and never looks down on us. Such a person is precious to us prostitutes."
Xu Jiang understood, and then she heard Xie Hongxing say, "Since he treated me with all his sincerity, I must repay him with all my sincerity. We women of the dust are not all heartless and ungrateful."
"My lady is so righteous, Xu Jiang admires her." After Jiang Gu got into trouble, thanks to Xie Hongxing's care, it would be hard to say whether he could have saved his life. It's hard not to like such a smart, affectionate and righteous woman.
The cavalry set off, and Jiang Gu was helped onto the horse. He turned around and waved to the others, muttering, "Farewell Chang'an, farewell Xingniang."
After seeing Jiang Gu off, Xie Hongxing also said goodbye to Xu and Lou and returned to Pingkangfang. She came from the world of romance and would return to it, and she could not escape it in this life.
Xu Jiang asked Lou Yunchun, "Did you agree with Jiang Gu to hand over the list of officials held hostage by Feng Miao within five days?"
"You know?"
"I just guessed it." Xie Hongxing said Jiang Gu was a man of conscience, and she thought he must have been so angry that day because of this matter. Xu Jiang was very understanding of his refusal to hand it over, but she was worried that if they were to find out about these people, they would accuse him of harboring a criminal. She was even more worried that these people would become secret agents, influence the court, and implicate innocent people. In that case, Jiang Gu would be guilty of a serious crime. "If you let him go without handing over the list, will it affect you?"
Lou Yunchun shook his head, "It's okay, I got the list."
"Ah?" Xu Jiang was puzzled.
"I've been keeping an eye on him and discovered that he hired someone to deliver letters to the officials' residences yesterday."
Xu Jiang was speechless, then realized, "Did you deliberately provoke him that day? You knew he wouldn't give anyone up, right?"
"Um."
Xu Jiang glared at Lou Yunchun, realizing he had suddenly reappeared to be the 'plague god' she'd first seen at the inn. These days, he'd been silent, attentive, and considerate in her presence, sometimes even jealous and coquettish, gradually blurring his identity and blurring the lines between them. Only then did she realize how cunning and sly he truly was.
"What's wrong?"
"Look at how many Lou Yunchuns are hidden under this handsome appearance of yours. How can I not see them all at a glance?"
Lou Yunchun only heard the word "handsome" and blushed slightly.
Xu Jiang cried out in her heart. She couldn't stand Lou Yunchun like this. But, forget it, since she liked him, she would just accept him reluctantly to avoid bringing harm to others.
She glanced at the smoke and dust that was going away, and said to Lou Yunchun, "Let's go, it's time for us to go back."
On the third day after Jiang Gu left, Feng Miao came to visit.
Lin Hongchu felt like he was facing a formidable enemy and was about to chase him away, but was stopped by Xu Jiang.
The Feng Miao in front of him had dark eyes and was calm and composed. He looked much more pleasing to the eye than the previous one who pretended to be mediocre and full of empty courtesy.
"Mr. Feng, thank you for visiting my humble home. What advice do you have for me?" Xu Jiang was cutting paper.
Feng Miao walked up to her and helped her sort out the scattered papers into a pile. Then he said with a smile, "Muzhi is of humble origin and has no talent or virtue. How dare I give you advice? I just came to visit a friend."
Xu Jiang smiled wryly, "Not everyone can afford a friend like you, young master."
"Is Madam Xu afraid?"
"What are you afraid of?"
"You're afraid that I'll poison you, or that I'll do something to you."
Xu Jiang clenched the cutting knife in his hand.
Feng Miao found a round stool and sat down, then asked, "I couldn't even ask you for a sip of tea last time. I wonder if you can have that pleasure today."
"Mr. Feng, why are you beating around the bush? Just tell me what you want to do today." Xu Jiang continued to cut paper with his head down and did not ask Lin Hongchu to pour him tea.
