Chapter 68 Sixty-Eight Slashes

There are thirteen servants in the Xu family, and the person in front of him is twelve. He originally served Master Xu Jiang, but was later taken back by the master of the house, so he rarely interacted with them.

From what he said, the Xu family is now defeated.

Xu Jiang sneered in her heart. If she lost, she lost. It had nothing to do with her anymore.

"I was sold to a caravan, and have been traveling with them everywhere. I only arrived in the capital yesterday. One of the horses was injured, so the cook asked me to sell it at a discount to buy a new one. I didn't expect to meet you here. Heaven is truly merciful." Xu Twelve chanted a few Buddhist scriptures and inquired, "How long have you been in the capital? Have you settled down here? What do you do for a living?"

Xu Jiang didn't answer, but instead asked, "When are you leaving?"

Xu Twelve was stunned. "In five days, the cavalry will set off for the Ancient Tea-Horse Road." Then he asked sadly, "Don't you want to see me?"

Xu Jiang stared at the slightly trembling tea on the table and said slowly, "I don't want to see anyone from the Xu family."

"I no longer have the surname Xu, but Ma. The cook calls me Ma Twelve."

Whether the surname is Xu or Ma, it doesn't matter to Xu Jiang. I think it doesn't matter to Xu Twelve either. He is a two-faced person without any foundation. It makes no difference to him what the surname is.

She just didn't want to see anyone related to the Xu family again.

Xu Jiang asked the stall owner to refill Ma Twelve's cup of tea, and then said, "This cup of tea is for your farewell. Just pretend you haven't seen me."

After saying that, he threw down the money for tea and went to Zhao Zhang's place.

Zhao Zhang saw her coming back and hurried over to greet her. He asked in a low voice, "Madam Xu doesn't look well. Is there something wrong?"

Hearing the concern in his tone, Xu Jiang's heart warmed up. She shook her head and said softly, "It's okay."

Seeing that she was unwilling to say more, Zhao Zhang didn't ask any more questions. He looked up and saw Ma Twelve walking towards him from the front, so he winked at Xu Jiang.

Xu Jiang glanced back and said to Zhao Zhang, "Brother Zhao, if he asks you about me, please help me cover up for him."

"That's for sure." Zhao Zhang saw Ma Twelve's unusual enthusiasm for Xu Jiang and felt that he had bad intentions. "Don't worry, Madam Xu. I won't tell him anything."

"Thank you very much." Xu Jiang didn't want to talk about this person anymore, so she asked, "How is the stubborn donkey?"

Seeing her expression change, Zhao Zhang heaved a sigh of relief and said with a smile, "It's okay. Just apply some herbal compresses and it will heal in a few days." To ease the atmosphere, he asked, "Look at the wound. Did it get into a fight with another donkey?"

He usually doesn't talk much, but today he took the initiative to start a conversation. How could Xu Jiang not know his good intentions? Thinking of the embarrassing incident when the stubborn donkey was bitten by the owner's vicious donkey, she couldn't help but curl her eyes.

"He was bitten by the donkey of the paper mill owner on the north street of this market. If he hadn't been pulled back in time, he would have been seriously injured."

"So it's from their family. They also have a stubborn temper."

The two chatted and laughed for a while, and when they saw Ma Twelve coming, Zhao Zhang immediately stopped smiling. He took Ma Twelve aside, saying that he wanted to see the horses again, and asked the horse boy to apply medicine to the stubborn donkey.

After the application, Ma Tong grabbed a few more prescriptions for Xu Jiang to take back. Xu Jiang paid the money, said goodbye to Zhao Zhang from a distance, and then left without looking back, leading the donkey.

Ma Shier was about to chase after him but was stopped by Zhao Zhang.

Zhao Zhang narrowed his eyes and said, "Brother, I misjudged your horse's value. It has a stomach ailment and a leg injury. It's not worth more than twenty-five taels."

Ma Twelve was stunned. "Why is there something wrong with my stomach again?"

Zhao Zhang frowned, "Could it be that you don't trust my horse-selection skills? Then let's go to someone else."

"No, no." He had already visited several houses, but the first time they heard his horse had a leg injury, they refused to take it. They said it would cost money to see a vet, that the horse's bones were old and wouldn't run for many years, and that it would be too much trouble to take it in and it wouldn't sell for a good price. He had finally been pointed out by someone and landed here, and the owner was willing to take it in. Why bother looking for another house?

The price is lower, so he asked, "What's your price, manager?"

A glint flashed in Zhao Zhang's eyes, "Eight taels."

"Eight taels?" The cavalry team leader looked at the silver that Ma Twelve handed over and was almost furious. His horse was worth twenty taels, if not twenty-five taels. How could this bastard sell it for such a low price?

He grabbed the purse, whipped Ma Twelve with his whip, and shouted angrily, "From now on, don't sleep in the inn. Go sleep in the stable!"
