Chapter 96 Ninety-six Cuts

After she finished the painting, Xu Jiang helped her to revise it, and soon a spring outing painting was completed.

Lin Hongchu put down his pen, touched the paper carefully, and smiled, "It looks really good."

Xu Jiang blew out the lanterns, leaving only one to illuminate the way, and then said to her, "Put it away, let's go back to the house."

The two of them then took the painting to the backyard. As soon as they entered the backyard, they heard a low conversation coming from Mrs. Lin's room.

Lin Hongchu was delighted and hurried to Mrs. Lin's room, and Xu Jiang followed quickly.

As they entered the room, they saw Mrs. Lin had woken up and was sitting and talking with Master Lin. Seeing the two of them come in, Mrs. Lin looked up and smiled at them.

Xu Jiang's heart skipped a beat when he saw that smile.

Lin Hongchu rushed to the bed and called out, "Mother, are you awake?"

Mrs. Lin patted her head, her voice so soft that it seemed to fade away at any moment, "Why aren't you sleeping yet?"

Lin Hongchu wiped away her tears and said, "I couldn't sleep, so I drew a picture with my sister for mother."

"Oh? Let me see it quickly." Then Mrs. Lin raised her hand to Xu Jiang again. Xu Jiang hurried forward to hold it, and sat down on the edge of the bed.

Master Lin also moved to the center, and the three of them just surrounded Madam Lin. Lin Hongchu slowly opened the scroll, and a picture of a spring outing appeared before Madam Lin.

Xu Jiang held up the lamp to illuminate the room, and Mrs. Lin carefully examined the painting inch by inch, and finally fixed her gaze on the person in the painting.

"That's great." She carefully caressed every person in the painting, "They're all here."

Xu Jiang wavered the hand holding the lamp, and Madam Lin looked at the painting again and again, as if trying to memorize every stroke. Then she turned to Master Lin and smiled, "I still remember the engagement letter you gave me back then. It was about Peach Blossom Night. It's fitting to mention it on this painting now."

Hearing the meaning of her words, Xu Jiang hurriedly got up and went to Bajizhai to get paper and pen, which happened to be available.

Soon, she got it back. Lin Hongchu brought a low table and placed it on the bed, allowing Mrs. Lin to watch Master Lin write.

The peach tree is young and thriving, and its flowers are bright and beautiful.

The son of Zhi is married, and he is suitable for his family.

The peach tree is young and tender, and its fruits are abundant.

The son of Zhi is married and is suitable for his family.

The peach tree is young and lush, with leaves that are dense.

When a son marries, he should be a good wife to his family.

After Master Lin finished writing the poem, he put the pen into Mrs. Lin's hand, held her hand, and they both signed their names together.

Like a mountain, there are peach trees.

After finishing writing, Mrs. Lin and Master Lin looked at each other and smiled.

Putting down the brush, Mrs. Lin looked at the painting twice before asking Lin Hongchu to put it away. Then she asked Master Lin to take out the shoes on the bedside table and hand them to Xu Jiang.

"I didn't let you try it, so I don't know if it will fit."

Xu Jiang pinched the size with her hand and said with a tearful smile, "It fits."

"It's fine as long as it fits." Madam Lin suddenly frowned, then took a deep breath and slowly said to Xu Jiang and Lin Hongchu, "It's getting late, go and rest."

Lin Hongchu was reluctant to leave, so Madam Lin patted her hands and coaxed her like she had when she was a child, "Be good, Hongchu, go to sleep."

"Go ahead. I'll talk to your mother for a while." Master Lin glanced at Xu Jiang.

Xu Jiang understood and pulled Lin Hongchu out.

Lin Hongchu walked to the door, stopped, turned back, and whispered to Madam Lin, "Mother, go to sleep peacefully. I'll wake you up at dawn."

Mrs. Lin smiled at her gently and replied, "Okay."

Both of them returned to Lin Hong's hoeing room in a daze.

After standing there for a while, Xu Jiang came back to her senses. She put down her shoes, pulled Lin Hongchu to sit on the bed, took off her shoes for her, helped her lie on the bed, and finally lay down on the bed herself.

She held Lin Hongchu in her arms and whispered, "Go to sleep."

Lin Hongchu leaned in her arms, crying silently. Xu Jiang patted her thin back, as if she was patting her helpless self back then.

As the clapping continued, the room fell silent.

Half asleep and half awake, Xu Jiang heard the sound of knocking on the cloud board outside.

Four tones.
