Chapter 23 Twenty-three Cuts

Xu Jiang asked Hu Xu to go to the clinic, but he refused, saying that it was just a superficial wound and not a big deal. Xu Jiang had to apply medicine to him herself.

As they applied the medicine, they were very close. Hu Xu stared at her, feeling her gentle movements, his face burning, and he felt that the beating was not in vain.

"Okay, remember not to touch the water when you get back."

Xu Jiang packed up the medicine and got up to go outside to clean up the spilled charcoal. Hu Xu also came to help.

"Boss, how come you are so brave? You just rush over like that, aren't you afraid of falling?" Thinking of Xu Jiang's brave appearance riding a donkey, Hu Xu felt as if his heart had not calmed down yet and was pounding.

"I'm sitting firmly and won't fall. Besides, if that stubborn donkey dares to throw me, we can eat donkey meat hot pot."

The stubborn donkey seemed to have heard what she said, and roared at the top of his lungs in the backyard.

"My dear lady, you are the most courageous and resourceful woman I have ever met." She is brave but not reckless, and has saved him from danger and hardship several times.

Xu Jiang teased, "That's because Zhuchun hasn't seen enough women."

Hu Xu was embarrassed by what she said and whispered, "It's a blessing to have met this person."

"I wasn't born this way, but I've experienced it so many times that I know how to deal with it." Ever since her teacher passed away, she'd lost everything and had to rely on herself. Over the years, she'd traveled extensively, met all sorts of people, and encountered all sorts of situations. Honestly, the Jisheng Bookstore incident wasn't a big deal.

"Looking at my boss, I often feel inferior to him."

"If Zhuchun thinks so, then you're totally wrong." Xu Jiang felt an itch on his face and reached out to scratch it. He added, "You don't know, but I often feel like I've found a treasure when I met you."

Hu Xu looked up at her and couldn't help but chuckle.

Xu Jiang was confused. "Why? Is that funny?"

Hu Xu walked up to her and wanted to wipe it off with his hands, but found that his hands were also black, so he stretched out his fingers and pointed at her face, "Your face is covered with charcoal dust."

"Ouch." Xu Jiang cried out and quickly ran to the backyard to wipe it off.

Hu Xu laughed, then looked at his hands which were also covered with charcoal ash and sighed almost inaudibly.

After cleaning up, Xu Jiang asked Hu Xu to sit down and have tea.

Thinking of what happened today, Hu Xu worriedly said, "What if someone comes to cause trouble again in the future?"

"I don't think so. They had a commotion in front of Jisheng Bookstore and in front of mine, both of which were quite noisy. Today we made these hooligans write confessions. If they make trouble again, we will really have to go to the authorities, and both sides will be embarrassed. My bookstore is small and not well-known, so it doesn't matter if people criticize us. Jisheng is different. They are famous and claim to be the leaders. If they really make a fuss and accuse them of bullying the market, their reputation will be difficult to salvage."

"That being said, he is backed by the Ministry of Revenue. If he can't come openly, he can come secretly. I'm afraid he will trip you up."

"I follow the rules and regulations and pay taxes according to the law. I have nothing to fear if I am upright." However, it would be difficult to buy plates and print in the future, and she would be isolated by Jisheng United and other bookstores. However, she was reluctant to tell Hu Xu about these things, for fear that he would worry about them.

"Why don't we go ask Mr. Yuan, Mr. Du, and the others? Let them come up with a solution together?"

Xu Jiang smiled softly, picked up the teacup and took a sip, "No need, they will come on their own."

Drinking tea alone is not enough to fill you up. After running around all day, Xu Jiang was already hungry. Seeing that it was getting late, and remembering that she had not eaten the mutton sent by Hu Xu, she suggested making a mutton hotpot.

"You were frightened and injured today, so you need to take good care of yourself."

Hu Xu couldn't help laughing when he saw her rushing into the kitchen. "Why are you so greedy? And you're using him as an excuse?"

"By the way, Zhuchun, go call Manager Wang and tell him to treat him to mutton hotpot." Xu Jiang's voice came from the kitchen.

"knew."

Xu Jiang had bought a copper pot in the West Market earlier, thinking that he could cook something hot when the weather got cold, and now it finally came in handy.

She lit charcoal on the stove, bringing it to a blazing glow, then placed it in the copper pot, covered it with a copper lid, and added the broth. The broth was made from hammered lamb shanks and simmered with ginger juice and sour water until it was a snow-white liquid. Then she blanched the thinly sliced lamb and ate it hot with the sauce; it was delicious.

Xu Jiang not only prepared a mutton pot, but also prepared some bamboo shoots, melon slices and braised meat to be eaten together.

Several people were eating enthusiastically and sweating.

Shopkeeper Wang ate the last piece of mutton and asked, "Madam Xu, how did you make this sauce? It's so delicious."

"This is chive sauce. I didn't make it. I bought it." It's said that the East and West Markets in Beijing are full of everything. When she saw someone selling chive sauce, she was quite surprised, so she bought two cans and ate almost all of it.

Shopkeeper Wang poured another bowl of soup, blew on it and drank it, finally satisfied. He touched his round belly and said helplessly, "I can never control my mouth when I come to your place."

Hu Xu was also a little full and said with a smile, "I've gained a lot of weight after following the boss for so long."

Xu Jiang glanced at his waist and said, "Not bad." She added, "They say study hard, study hard. If you don't have a strong body, how can you endure the hard and boring years under the lamp?"

"That makes sense!" Shopkeeper Wang threw a few more slices of bacon into the pot and put them directly into Hu Xu's bowl when they were done.

Hu Xu was at a loss for words, but he still managed to eat it. After he finished eating, he looked at Xu Jiang, wanting to say something but stopping himself.

"Boss, there is something I want to discuss with you."

Shopkeeper Wang looked at him hurriedly with an expectant look.

Xu Jiang also put down her chopsticks and stared at him quietly.

"I shouldn't be talking about this now, but I want my boss to be prepared first, so we don't get caught off guard." He smiled shyly before saying, "Mr. Yuan wants to take me in as his student."
