Fen Ling’s eyes brightened upon hearing Su Rong’s words.
Right, his sister had encountered Zhang Yun before. If Zhang Yun did have the scent of gaharu on him, then the hawks, with their sharp noses, could certainly locate his approximate area. He could then lead a search and it would be much easier.
The range of Nanping wasn’t vast to begin with.
But as he looked at Su Rong, he said, "Sister, I promised never to leave your side from now on, to protect you well."
"I’m here," Zhou Gu took over, "Go take care of what you need."
Fen Ling looked at Zhou Gu.
Zhou Gu laughed lightly, "Rest assured, as long as she is with me, I won’t let her out of my sight."
If it were in the past, Fen Ling could hardly be at ease, but after training swords with Zhou Gu yesterday, he wasn’t worried about Zhou Gu’s ability to protect Su Rong. After all, it was Zhou Gu who had saved him.
"Just go if you’re told to go, don’t be a scaredy-cat," Su Rong shot a glance at Fen Ling. "Zhang Yun is very important now. Whether we can capture him or not is key to delaying the Jibei Army’s attack on the city."
Fen Ling nodded, "Alright."
He and the hawks had the best understanding of how to track someone, so naturally, that was his strength.
After breakfast, Fen Ling left the courtyard with his hawks and his team.
Seeing Fen Ling leaving, Ziye suddenly felt the pressure of guarding two important people, which made him focus all his energy fully.
Today was a sunny day. The sun streamed in from the outside window. Su Rong asked Zhou Gu to hold her and lay down on a couch near the window to bask in the sun.
Zhou Gu positioned her comfortably, and then sprawled casually next to her, playing with her hair. He was relaxed all over, like a big lazy cat, radiating an air of leisureliness.
Su Rong looked at him again and again.
Zhou Gu raised an eyebrow, "What are you always looking at me for?"
"Because you’re good-looking."
Zhou Gu’s lips curled up into a pleased smile, "Feel free to look more if I’m good-looking, no charge."
Su Rong laughed.
Zhou Gu had never realized before that such a leisurely half-day could bring such a deep sense of peace and joy. He had never thought that one day he would be lying under the sun with a girl, not saying a word, but feeling extremely content.
Such days were extremely rare, precious then and likely to remain so in the future. So, he treasured them greatly.
Su Rong reached out her hand and gently touched his face, "Do you know when we were in Jiangning County, the thing I thought about the most every day being with you?"
Zhou Gu thought for a while, "You wanted me to hold you?"
Su Rong shook her head, "No, not that."
Zhou Gu asked, "Then what were you thinking about? I remember one day, you wanted me to hold you, I didn’t, and you were unhappy."
Su Rong smiled, remembering how hard it was back then to get a hug, and how now after they were married, he would affectionately cuddle with her every day, she said, "I just wanted to touch you like this, anytime I want."
"Touching my face?" Zhou Gu asked.
Su Rong nodded.
Zhou Gu chuckled, put his face closer and murmured, "What a strange habit."
Su Rong’s fingertips became substantial, and she touched his solid face, "It’s the strange habit of liking your face."
Zhou Gu was satisfied, "Feel free to touch."
Ziye, squatting under the window, listened to the conversation in the room and almost had his teeth rotting from the sweetness. As a guard, why should he have to listen to their lover’s talk?
He sighed. It was all because of the two hundred thousand soldiers positioned outside Nanping City. He feared that the information about their masters’ private conversations in this residence would be leaked. Thus, he could only stay close, always paying attention to the messages from the hidden guards, dare not return to his room to rest.
Ah, his life was so tough.
At this point, he was a little envious of Fen Ling who got to leave for his mission.
As Zhou Gu predicted, Zhang Yun was hiding in a place - a teeming temple.
That day, after Nangong Yu had swarmed Su Rong, Zhang Yun left on horseback heading to Nanping City. When he arrived, he couldn’t get in touch with Zhang Mao and his men, so he guessed that something must have happened to Zhang Mao.
He tutted to himself, thinking about his ambitious elder brother, it was a humbling defeat indeed.
He didn’t dare sneak into Nanping City. After all, the city was strictly guarded, so he decided to avoid public attention and directly went to a Buddhist temple not far from Nanping City.
There were his people in this Buddhist temple, and they hadn’t been discovered and eliminated by Su Rong. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
After Zhang Yun discreetly lodged in the temple, he ordered his men to closely monitor the situation in Nanping City, while also inquiring whether Su Rong had been killed by Nangong Yu.
He stayed in the temple for a day, and when the men who were sent to gather information returned, they reported, "Third Young Master, Nangong Yu has been killed."
Zhang Yun, who was fingering Buddha Beads while lying down, sat up abruptly, "What did you say?"
"Nangong Yu has been killed. Most of the secret guards he brought from the Nangong Family were wiped out. The few remaining are being hunted down."
Zhang Yun was shocked, "Nangong Yu had nearly a thousand secret guards."
The man nodded, "Still, he was killed. The news is solid."
"Who killed him? Su Rong?" Although Zhang Yun knew that Su Rong was very capable, he did not expect that she could escape Nangong Yu and even kill him.
"It should be Zhou Gu."
"Zhou Gu, huh." Upon hearing this, Zhang Yun seemed no longer surprised, "He is indeed formidable. He was supposed to be in Ten-Eight Gang, but when did he leave and kill Nangong Yu?"
He asked, "What about Su Rong? Was she killed by Nangong Yu?"
The man shook his head, "Probably not. Zhou Gu arrived in time and probably saved her. Otherwise, if she died, it wouldn’t have been so calm."
"That’s right." Zhang Yun nodded, "Su Rong’s identity is indeed extraordinary. She must be incredibly lucky. Or should I say, fortunate?"
He put down the Buddha beads and stood up, pacing in the room twice with a changing expression on his face. He asked, "Where are my uncle’s soldiers?"
"They’re almost at Nanping City."
Zhang Yun instructed, "Keep an eye on them. If anything happens in Nanping City, report to me immediately."
"Yes."
Zhang Yun then ordered, "Also, find out the whereabouts of Su Rong and Zhou Gu."
"Yes."
Zhang Yun paced the room for a while more, walked to the window, looked outside, where the tall ancient trees in the temple and the evergreen pine and cypress trees scattered with the smell of human life. He thought that people with good luck have a future. Some people are good, but without good fortune, it’s all in vain. And Su Rong, who could survive against all odds, must be really lucky.
Zhang Yun’s men were quite capable and didn’t keep him waiting for long. They reported to Zhang Yun, "Third Young Master, our army has arrived. Second Master is leading the attack on the city, but the eldest brother has been captured by Ning Chi, so the Second Master is hesitant to attack the city."
Zhang Yun frowned, "My eldest brother sure is full of surprises."
He immediately walked out of the room and ordered the men, "Prepare my horse, come with me, let’s go to the army."
