A group of people arrived at the city gate and saw Ning Ze rushing down from the city building to meet them at the gate.
The entire being of Ning Ze was filled with excitement and joy, "Lady Su Qi."
Su Rong smiled at him, "I just heard the Young Master praising you. You’ve done a great job, showing significant growth. I told him that you’ve always had potential, it’s just that it was wrapped in sugar coating and not able to show before."
Ning Ze’s face suddenly reddened, he chuckled and was obviously delighted by the compliment. With his body radiating courage and loyalty, he declared, "I will work even harder from now on."
"Hmm, I believe in you," Su Rong nodded.
Ning Ze seemed to shed off all his exhaustion, not feeling restless anywhere, as if the person who was just fighting fiercely on the city wall wasn’t him. He was full of energy, "I can go and help Lord Thursday right now."
"Sure, you go ahead!" Su Rong gestured.
Ning Ze walked a few steps towards the outside of the city, and suddenly remembered something. He turned back and pointed at Su Rong, "Lady Su Qi, this is Zhang Mao. His leg was injured while saving me. It’s quite severe."
Su Rong had already seen Zhang Mao, her eyes gentle, "Lord Zhang."
"Zhang Mao is already dead." Zhang Mao pushed away the people who were supporting him and slowly knelt on the ground, "I wish to follow Lady Su Qi, please grant me a new name and accept me."
His body seemed a bit tense, his hands clenched, and his voice also slightly strained, as if he was afraid Su Rong would refuse him. If Su Rong wouldn’t accept him, he didn’t know what he would do next. Would there be a path left for him?
Su Rong saw everything clearly and stepped forward to help him up, "Lord Zhang, please rise. If you sincerely want to follow me, I won’t refuse a talented person. First, go see a doctor. We’ll discuss further matters later."
Zhang Mao immediately felt a surge of unnamed emotions flooding his heart, causing his eyes to rim with redness. He did not expect Su Rong would accept him so straightforwardly, without any hesitation. He rose with Su Rong’s help, "Yes, thank you Lady Su Qi."
He needed to see a doctor urgently. He couldn’t afford to lose this leg, otherwise he would truly become useless.
Ning Chi called two people over and instructed, "Get a stretcher and immediately take Lord Zhang back to the residence to find a doctor."
Someone complied, quickly brought a stretcher, and Zhang Mao thanked Ning Chi. He was carried on the stretcher and sent to the Marquis Nanping Residence first.
Stretchers were in high demand and in short supply. Ning Chi and Jiang Zhu could barely manage to walk back on their own.
Thus, the three of them slowly went inside.
Jiang Zhu watched the whole process of how Su Rong encouraged Ning Ze and moved Zhang Mao with just a few words. Lady Su Qi must have learned the art of managing people at a very young age, her skills were truly impeccable.
Also, the things she said to him were both comfortable and satisfying. He felt that although he hadn’t met anyone, he had chosen a very wise mistress.
They arrived at the Marquis Nanping Residence, entered the front hall. Su Rong first called for a servant to fetch a paper and pen, stood by the desk and wrote out a prescription, and handed it to Ning Chi, "This is the formula for the antidote for the Relaxing Muscle powder. Gather all the medicinal materials from all the pharmacies in the city, set up a large pot to boil the medicine. First, neutralize the poison of the 150,000 troops outside, and then detoxify the river. Be quick with the 150,000 troops, don’t wait for Zhang Yun to counterattack."
Ning Chi knew this was the most important task and immediately received it, "What Lady Su Qi said is right, I’ll order it now."
He glanced at the medicine prescription, called someone over, and gave them serious instructions.
The lead physician at Marquis Nanping’s residence finished examining Zhang Mao’s injury and came to Ning Chi with a somewhat troubled expression, "Young Lord, I am afraid the elder lord’s leg... I apologize for my inability... the injury is too severe, I am afraid we cannot save it."
Ning Chi’s brow furrowed tightly at the news, "What are your chances?"
"Three out of ten."
Upon hearing this, Ning Chi turned to Su Rong with a helpless expression, "Lady Su Qi, this is the best doctor in Nanping City."
Su Rong stood up, "I’ll go and have a look."
She walked out of the room and went to the next one. She saw Zhang Mao lying on the bed, his face pale, his expression somewhat gray and despairing. It seemed that he never thought that after Su Rong had agreed to accept him, he would face the prospect of losing a leg and becoming a useless cripple.
It seemed that God had played a joke on him, leaving him truly without a way out.
When he saw Su Rong had come in, his voice trembled, "Lady Su Qi."
Su Rong walked over to the bedside, glanced at the wound on his leg which exposed the bone and was sawed off. It was no wonder the doctor had no confidence. After a mere glance, her gaze became calm and she spoke to Zhang Mao, "Don’t worry, I’ll treat you. I can save this leg of yours."
Zhang Mao widened his eyes in surprise, "Really?"
"Really." Su Rong glanced at the medical kit set aside and spoke to the doctor who had just come in, "Could you help me?"
After saying this, she rolled up her sleeves and started to wash her hands.
The doctor was also shocked and his eyes widened, "You know medical skills?"
Su Rong acknowledged with a hum.
Ning Chi and Jiang Zhu, who had just come in, were also surprised. They never expected that Su Rong, without any hesitation and with such severe injuries, said she could save him.
Ning Chi suddenly remembered hearing a rumor from Capital City about Nanping. It said that one day, Lady Su Qi was at the Buddha temple praying. In the middle of the night, Lord Thursday of the Duke Residence fell ill with a high fever. The Imperial Doctor from the Imperial Medical Bureau and doctors from the pharmacies all over the city were summoned to the Duke Residence. They tried everything but couldn’t break Lord Thursday’s fever. In the end, it was Princess Sheng An who sent someone to the Buddha temple to invite Lady Su Qi to return to the Capital City. Although they held out a slim hope, to everyone’s surprise, after Lady Su Qi rushed back to the Capital City and saw Lord Thursday, he recovered after taking only one prescription from her.
At that time, her reputation for being medically skilled spread out of the Capital City. It was rumored that she was somewhat of a miracle doctor, some believed it, and some didn’t.
Now it seemed, she truly was very capable.
Su Rong washed her hands with clean water, then disinfected them and the various tools with alcohol. Then she set about restoring Zhang Mao’s fracture, applying medicine, suturing, and applying a splint and bandages.
Zhang Mao had already passed out from the pain, but Su Rong’s hand didn’t tremble throughout the process. However, her forehead was full of sweat and her whole body was soaked in sweat. After all, her injuries hadn’t fully healed yet. Working on this task wasn’t too physically demanding, but it did require full focus and concentration, which was very exhausting. In simpler words, her body was still too weak.
The doctor assisted Su Rong throughout the process, following her directions. At the end, he was genuinely impressed, "Young miss has such excellent medical skills at such a tender age, I feel ashamed."
Su Rong weakly waved her hand and didn’t want to say a word anymore.
Ning Chi saw her drenched in sweat and wanted to fetch a handkerchief for her, but he felt it was inappropriate. Jiang Zhu was previously warned by Zhou Gu, so he was even less likely to casually give Su Rong his handkerchief. The two men looked at each other, both somewhat helpless.
It was the more intelligent Jiang Zhu who called a maidservant over and told her, "Hurry and help my mistress wipe her sweat."
The maidservant promptly took out her unused clean handkerchief and gently wiped the sweat off Su Rong’s face.
