The two of them reconciled, and naturally, Zhou Gu followed Su Rong back into a room and laid back down on a bed.
Su Rong smiled at him, "Where did you sleep last night?"
Zhou Gu pointed next door.
Su Rong raised her eyebrows, "Why don’t you go there today?"
Zhou Gu grumbled, "Xingzhi and Yanjin were both squeezed with me last night, three people on a big bed, do you think it was possible to sleep?"
Su Rong replied: "It’s still possible since you three are thin."
Zhou Gu closed his eyes, "I’d rather stay with you, I’m not leaving."
"Didn’t you forget that Uncle Xie forbade it?" Seeing him goof around, Su Rong reminded him.
Zhou Gu hadn’t forgotten, "The day before when you were hurt, I was there with you. When Uncle Xie came and found out, he didn’t say anything, and nobody forced me to leave."
He stretched out his hand to hold Su Rong’s fingers, "Maybe Uncle Xie also feels that we are pitiful. We had just confessed our feelings for each other when the war broke out. Yesterday we were almost killed by Dawei. So, Uncle Xie has sympathy for us and feels we should have more chances to stay together. Formalities and decorum are not worth mentioning in the face of life and death."
Su Rong chuckled and closed her eyes as she tightly held his hand, "Alright, sleep!"
As long as he wasn’t angry, everything would be fine. She managed to calm him down quickly after yesterday’s temper, did he cool down before she woke up? It was not the case. He simply didn’t want to add more burden upon her by fighting with her under the circumstances where both had suffered injury, and with Dawei laying in wait outside.
Zhou Gu spoke softly, "Su Rong, you promised me. No matter what happens in the future, don’t send me away. I don’t want to save my life nor live just to avenge you. Rather than living hopelessly, I’d rather live and die with you." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"Okay, I got it." Su Rong replied him softly, "Don’t worry, it won’t happen again. I will keep my word this time."
The two had just fallen asleep when the shouts from the city gate gradually ceased.
With his eyes closed, Zhou Gu whispered, "It seems that Dawei has withdrawn its troops. I didn’t expect such a decisive move. It’s worthy of Yuan Zhao."
Su Rong responded groggily, "Without the siege cannon, there aren’t enough masters, there’s no choice but to find another way. It seems we can sleep peacefully tonight."
Zhou Gu felt the same, he stopped talking and comfortably drifted off to sleep.
Once they went to sleep, they slept for an entire day.
When Zhou Gu woke up, it was just turning dark. He turned around to look at Su Rong who was still sleeping next to him. He didn’t disturb her but carefully got out of the bed and slowly moved outside the room.
Upon noticing his emergence, Lan Zhi asked in a whisper, "Young Master, you’re awake? Is our lady awake? Are you hungry?"
Zhou Gu shook his head, "She is still asleep."
Just as he was about to ask "What’s the status of the city gate? After Dawei withdrew the troops, was there any further incident?", he noticed someone standing not far away. With a start, he exclaimed, "Zhi Bai? How did you get here?"
Zhi Bai was the personal guard of the old Duke.
Zhi Bai stepped forward, saluted, "Young Master, I am here under the orders of the old Duke, bringing guards from the Duke Residence to assist you."
Zhou Gu asked: "Did my grandfather find out about my situation in Nanchu?"
Zhi Bai nodded and then shook his head, "When I left with others, the old Duke did not yet know about your situation in Nanchu. However, halfway on our journey, we received a courier from the old Duke informing about your perilous situation in Nanchu."
Zhi Bai expressed his shame, "I should have been at Heiya Pass two days earlier, but upon entering Nanchu, we found people from the Nangong Family causing chaos and I had to deal with them, which caused the delay."
Zhou Gu nodded, "How many people did you bring with you?"
"I initially brought five hundred men, later the old Duke dispatched another five hundred to follow us. He said these one thousand men are all for you, Young Master. From today onwards, I will follow you around just like Ziye," Zhi Bai said.
Zhou Gu gasped, "In this way, my Grandfather has dispatched almost half of the Duke Residence’s manpower to me."
Zhi Bai nodded, "The old Duke said, you are currently much in need of help. Accept it without worry, not only he as a grandfather is concerned about you, the Crown Prince and the other two princes are also concerned and won’t object. As the grand princess mentioned earlier, since you are not inheriting the business, what is the issue with having more people? It will ease your burden."
Zhou Gu sighed, "I’m grateful to my grandfather."
The character of the old Duke, he knew it the best. The rules had been set decades ago and had not changed. Now, for his sake, these rules have been changed.
Zhi Bai continued, "In addition to me, the second and third princes each sent a hundred guards for you. I met them halfway and we joined forces."
"Second Brother and Third Brother? What’s happening?" Zhou Gu was puzzled.
Zhi Bai replied: "According to them, they saw people from Qinghe Cui family entering Nanchu from the border, they speculated your situation must be dire. Otherwise Mister Cui of the Qinghe Cui family wouldn’t send a large group of people into Nanchu, it must be to assist you. They moved in order to gather information and to provide you with more manpower."
Zhou Gu nodded and felt warmth in his heart, "I’m grateful to Second Brother and Third Brother."
It has to be said, these people, arrived at the perfect time. Most of his men were dead, and those remaining were badly injured. Barely anyone was left to even support him, and he had to ask his younger cousin for help.
He asked Zhi Bai, "How long have you been here? Have you been waiting for me to wake up?"
"I haven’t been here for long, just for about an hour. Lan Zhi said you and the princess had been sleeping for a day due to injuries and you should be waking up soon. So, I waited outside the door," Zhi Bai said.
Zhou Gu nodded, "Come, let’s go to the adjacent hall. Tell me everything about the situation at home, is everything okay?"
Zhi Bai nodded, seeing Zhou Gu’s slow movement, he promptly stepped forward to support him, and they went to the adjacent hall to talk.
Zhi Bai told Zhou Gu that the Duke Residence had been waiting for news from him. Unfortunately, after waiting for two months, there was no news from him, not even a word had been sent back to Daliang. The Grand Princess was restless and although the old Duke was calm at the beginning, he began to feel uneasy. One day, the Duchess received a letter that shocked her, but she did not alarm anyone in the Duke Residence. She hurriedly sent someone to Qinghe Cui family. The old Duke observed this and secretly guessed it might be because of the fourth prince. He chose not to break the silence of the Duchess and immediately sent Zhi Bai and others to Nanchu. If it were not for the delay due to encountering the trouble caused by people from the Nangong family after entering Nanchu, he should have arrived before the people from Qinghe Cui family.
When he learned about the dangerous situation from yesterday, where the princess was almost killed, he regretted deeply. His delay had almost resulted in a great disaster, he was full of remorse.
Zhou Gu asked Zhi Bai, "How many people from the Nangong Family caused the ruckus? They didn’t withdraw from Nanchu together with Nangong Zheng?"
"There were several hundreds of them." Zhi Bai replied, "I was afraid this force might grow, so I led my men to suppress them. That’s why it took me some time."
