Su Rong received a letter from Su Xingze a month later.
As she read how their father wanted him to have his Great Wedding within half a year and how he terribly missed his mother, suggesting that she should return for his Great Wedding, she couldn’t help but laugh.
Fortuitously, the grand madame was accompanying her in the Palace, and she handed the letter to the grand madame, "Mother, it’s a letter from elder brother."
The grand madame was sewing clothes for the toddler and did not even lift her head as she responded, "Haven’t I already mentioned, what’s there to see in his letters? Don’t bother me, I just have a sleeve left to do, and I must finish it today."
Su Rong, feeling helpless, said, "Mother, please do take a look! Elder brother has something to say in the letter. He’s going to have his Great Wedding."
The grand madame paused, puzzled, "Wasn’t he not in a hurry? What’s the rush now? Did he get into trouble? Did he get some girl pregnant?"
Su Rong looked at her, speechless, "Do you think that’s possible?"
If it were another man, perhaps it could be possible, but this was Su Xingze; he would never allow himself to act so foolishly.
The grand madame turned back to her sewing, "Then there’s nothing worth looking at. So he’s having his Great Wedding, let him be."
Su Rong was at a loss for words and after a long pause said, "He is your son, and you haven’t seen him for five years. He is now going to have his Great Wedding. Don’t you want to go back and attend the ceremony?"
The grand madame decisively said, "No."
"You only have one son."
"And I only have one grandson," the grand madame replied without looking up. "Doctor Zhang has already said, this child you’re carrying is a boy."
Su Rong sighed, "Mother, aren’t you being a bit excessive? You’ve forgotten your son and husband over your grandchildren."
"Are you criticizing me?" the grand madame immediately felt displeased.
"No." Su Rong put down the letter and explained, "Once you finish your work, please take a look at it yourself! Father misses you, he’s unable to sleep alone at night, and he wants elder brother to have his Great Wedding within half a year — one reason is he wants you to return, and secondly, elder brother is indeed not young anymore. If he doesn’t marry within half a year, who knows how long it could be delayed once the war starts. Elder brother thought it made sense, so he sent this letter to you and me."
She was pregnant and could not go back to attend her brother’s Great Wedding, but her mother could actually go.
The grand madame cursed, "That old fool, why would he miss me? He’s really looking for trouble."
Su Rong turned to look at her, and saw her face turned to the side, focusing intently on sewing the clothes. Having spent five years in Nanchu, time seemed to have left no mark on her face; she looked very young and radiant, always lively and glowing every day.
She smiled and leaned closer, hugging her arm, "Mother, it’s truly wonderful to have you with me. Father and my elder brother must be very jealous of me."
Finally, the grand madame laughed, "So you should be content. Dare to criticize me and I’ll break your leg."
"I’m not criticizing you at all. If you don’t want to go back, then don’t go back," Su Rong no longer insisted.
The grand madame grunted, glanced at her son’s letter, "What’s there to go back to? If he’s supposed to have his Great Wedding, then let him. If he’s to have children, then let him. He has in-laws, the girl’s parents only have one daughter, and now that she’s married to him, isn’t it like having a son of their own? Don’t feel sorry for him; he lacks no love. As for your father, he’s just idle. You should write a letter to His Majesty asking him to assign more tasks to him."
Su Rong laughed outright, "Alright."
That evening, Zhou Gu came home and felt Su Rong’s belly, "Was he well-behaved today?"
"Very well-behaved."
Zhou Gu smiled, praising, "Good."
He sat next to Su Rong, "Did your uncle send a letter?"
"Yes." Su Rong briefly shared the contents of the letter with him and then thought it was funny, "Mother feels she has everything with me; she doesn’t even want to go back for elder brother’s Great Wedding."
She really hadn’t expected that.
Zhou Gu laughed, "Tsk, the older cousin is really pitiful."
Su Rong laughed and punched him.
Su Xu had waited two months and finally received a letter from the Mistress of the Residence. It was a thin piece of letter paper telling him not to cause any troubles. Their son’s Great Wedding would be fine with him there; she was staying to accompany their granddaughter’s birth. She told him that at his age, he shouldn’t be thinking nonsensically and embarrassing himself.
Su Xu was so angry he almost tore the letter into pieces, saying to Su Xingze, "Look at this, look at this, your mother has long forgotten about me in her eyes and heart."
Su Xingze sighed, "Father, you are everything to the Mistresses. Just live well with them! After all, it was you who brought them into our house; you have to take responsibility until the end."
Su Xu deflated, "Life has to go on. Even she won’t come back for your Great Wedding, what else can I do?"
He couldn’t exactly go to Nanchu and drag her back.
His mood was gloomy, and he said to Su Xingze, "You are so useless."
Su Xingze choked, wondering who exactly was the useless one.
Liu Yu overheard that the Mistress would not return, and she asked Su Xingze quietly, "Are you really her biological child?"
Su Xingze laughed, "What do you think?"
Liu Yu was very skeptical, "Really? A mother not returning for her own son’s Great Wedding?"
"Yes, and that’s your future mother-in-law."
Liu Yu choked.
Should she be happy to have such a mother-in-law? After all, she wouldn’t need to adhere strictly to morning and evening protocols or face someone setting rules after her Great Wedding. But... something seemed off.
Su Xingze patted her head, "In my mother’s heart, I am less important than my seventh sister, her granddaughter, and the grandson who is yet to be born. Let her be!"
Liu Yu reached out and hugged him, "I will treat you better in the future, and so will my parents."
Su Xingze chuckled, "Okay."
Actually, if it weren’t for his father missing his mother, he wouldn’t wish for her return either. Firstly, the journey was long, and secondly, his sister was having a tough pregnancy with six months of morning sickness that had made her lose a lot of weight. His mother naturally had to stay by her side. If he weren’t so busy, he would have gone to visit too.
Eager to get a daughter-in-law, the Rui An Queen, after receiving a positive response from Prince Xiaocheng’s Mansion, immediately had people match the birth charts and set a wedding date. Upon hearing that Su Xingze’s Great Wedding was set for six months later, she instantly decided that Xie Lin should also have his Great Wedding in six months.
Thus, the news of two joyous events spread throughout the capital, with the wedding dates set very close together, less than half a month apart.
Xie Lin boasted to Su Xingze with pride, "I also have a fiancée now, and I’m not that much later than you, just half a month."
Su Xingze admired, "You’re impressive."
He had never seen anyone rush to settle down so urgently; Xie Lin was second to none in that regard.
After the feast, Su Xingze packed a jug of Drunken Flower Drink and several boxes of Dim Sum. Seeing this, Xie Lin did the same and carried them to the Prince’s Palace.
Li Wan was surprised to see Xie Lin bringing things after the feast, "Little Prince, what is this...?"
Xie Lin coughed lightly, stuffing the items to her, "Whatever others have, you should have too. The Dim Sum is freshly made; take it back to your room and eat it quickly. I’m leaving now."
Li Wan holding the items asked, "Who has it that I should have it too?"
Xie Lin said, "Su Xingze’s fiancée has them, so you should have them too."
Li Wan "Oh" in response, breaking into a smile.
