That evening, Han Chae-young sat on a chair next to the crib, gazing at her daughter's sleeping face.
The six-month-old baby has similar eyebrows and eyes to hers. With her adorable eyes wide open, she's especially cute.
"Baby, be good, baby, go to sleep."
As night deepened outside the window, the hands of the clock on the wall quietly slid past midnight.
As before, Lu Cheng still did not go home.
After graduating from university, he was assigned to work as an engineer in a machinery factory. Since Han Caiying gave birth to their daughter, he has been so engrossed in his work that he lives and eats at the factory and is unwilling to go home. Being a chauvinist, he felt that having a daughter had brought shame to the Lu family, and he wanted a son.
After putting her daughter to sleep, Han Chae-young sat on the sofa waiting for Lu Cheng.
Tomorrow is Lu Cheng's father's birthday, and she thought Lu Cheng would definitely come home early tonight, so she decided to wait. But as she waited, she fell asleep on the sofa.
At two o'clock in the morning, the sound of a key turning in the lock woke her up.
Lu Cheng stumbled into the room, and Han Caiying struggled to wake up from her light sleep, only to find herself asleep on the sofa.
"You're back?" She turned on the light.
Lu Cheng squinted and reclined on the sofa. "Mmm."
Han Chae-young stood up, her voice trembling, "Lu Cheng, I want to talk to you."
Lu Cheng, however, looked impatient. "What are we talking about? What do we have to talk about?"
Han Chae-young clenched her fists and finally spoke the words she had been holding back, "You haven't been home for six months since I gave birth to our daughter. I'm your wife, and our daughter and I need you. Aren't you being too unfair to me by not coming home?"
Lu Cheng lay reclining on the sofa, his gaze shifting from hazy to clear, then to a coldness that Han Caiying had never seen before.
"I'm sorry?" Lu Cheng suddenly raised his voice, "I don't like you at all. If you hadn't taken the initiative to sleep with me, would I have married you?"
Han Chae-young stood frozen in place, as if she had been doused with a bucket of ice water. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
Tears streamed down her face silently, but she didn't wipe them away.
She had thought that after marriage, spending every day together, he would fall in love with her, and having a child would be the fruit of their love. But... all she got in return was disdain...
"But I gave birth to your child! Lu Cheng, that's your daughter, your own flesh and blood," she finally said in a low voice.
"But what I wanted was a son. Blame it on you for not having a son."
After Lu Cheng finished speaking, he got up and went straight to the bedroom, slamming the door shut.
Han Chae-young wiped away her tears. She had imagined that she would be unhappy after marriage, but she never expected it to end like this.
Lu Cheng's father and mother were also woken up by the noise. They were quite helpless to hear their son and daughter-in-law arguing, but the elderly couple pretended not to hear it, adhering to the principle of "better to avoid trouble."
Lu Cheng hadn't been home for the past six months, and his elderly parents had noticed. They had even spoken to him about it, but Lu Cheng simply said, "I never liked her in the first place. I just wanted a son. Is that wrong?" This left the old couple speechless. After all, their Lu family had only one son per generation, and they longed for a grandson.
That night, Han Chae-young slept on the sofa but didn't sleep a wink. She began to regret her initial choice...
The next day was Lu Cheng's father's birthday.
Early in the morning, Han Caiying took her meat and egg coupons to buy vegetables. Although she harbored resentment, she couldn't lose face in this situation.
The Lu family was chatting in the living room, with Lu's mother holding her granddaughter and trying to lull her to sleep.
The doorbell rang.
Everyone looked up at the same time.
"I'll go open the door." Lu's mother, carrying her child, went to open the door. There were two police officers standing at the door.
"Excuse me, is this Han Chae-young's house?"
"Yes. What's the matter, officer?" Mrs. Lu asked, somewhat puzzled.
The young police officer opened his notebook: "Her father, Han Jun, suffered a sudden heart attack in prison and needs a direct relative to sign a surgical consent form and pay a deposit."
Lu's mother was stunned. "Officer, are you sure you're not mistaken? Han Caiying is an orphan; she has neither a father nor a mother."
"We're not mistaken, it's her."
After saying that, the police officer handed a household registration card to Lu's mother.
Lu's mother immediately took the card and looked at it.
It's Han Jun's household registration card. In the section on children's relationships, it says: Father and daughter. Han Chae-young, father and son. Han Xiao-hai. Next to the son's name, it says "congenital intellectual disability".
Seeing this, Lu's mother felt she was about to collapse and quickly called for help.
"This, how is this possible? Old Lu, son, come here quickly."
Lu's father and Lu Cheng walked over. They were both stunned when they saw the household registration certificate.
"How can there be a father and a younger brother?"
"Father is a criminal? Brother is mentally challenged? Good heavens!"
"This woman, she lied to me!"
Lu Cheng was agitated and punched the door in anger.
He never expected Han Chae-young to lie to him!
He should have thought of that sooner!
Lu's mother asked him, "Son, what do you plan to do?"
Lu Cheng declared resolutely, "I want a divorce!"
"But what about the child?" Mrs. Lu looked at her sleeping granddaughter, feeling a pang of pity.
"No, it's a girl anyway."
After Lu Cheng finished speaking, he turned around and went back into the house.
Mr. and Mrs. Lu couldn't help but sigh, "What a tragedy!"
The seemingly perfect daughter-in-law turned out to be a fraud.
...
Over there, Han Chae-young had just returned from grocery shopping when she saw the family looking very upset.
She was puzzled and asked, "Dad, Mom, Lu Cheng, what's wrong? You don't look well."
