Chapter 8
During the time that Chunxi was in the hospital, Rachel came over every day to play with Chunxi. The more she interacted with Chunxi, the more she wondered how there could be such a cute and well-behaved child in the world? Then I really look forward to giving birth to such a beautiful, cute and well-behaved little girl in the future.
Even Strange, this oddball, was very gentle in front of Chunxi and would play with her, which simply surprised Rachel. I've never seen Strange in such a good temper...
By the fifth day, Chunxi had completely recovered from the trauma of being hit. Apart from having to bandage her eyes for half a month, the terrible incident seemed to have no effect on her at all. Fu Chanwei and David were planning to take her to Funchal, Portugal to visit her grandmother.
Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island, Portugal, and the industrial and commercial centre of the island. Not only does this place have beautiful scenery and a mild climate, it is also the place where the local specialty, Madeira wine, is produced. In general, this place is actually quite suitable for vacation and leisure, with sunshine, beaches, waves and so on.
The plane flew to Lisbon Airport and then transferred to Madeira Island. The journey was quite long, and it was already late when we arrived in Funchal.
Although David has been resentful of Theresa for all these years, he still misses her. Now the closer he is to his mother, the more nervous he becomes, and he feels even more timid as he gets closer to home.
What David could not have imagined was that the address where his mother lived was actually a slum, with dilapidated houses, dirty and crowded roads, and a bad smell. Ragged homeless people, tattooed, smoking thugs, and naughty kids playing football can be seen everywhere on the street.
David really never thought that his mother would live in such a place. Fu Chanwei had not expected that, even if Theresa exiled herself, the DuPont family would not allow the previous mistress of the DuPont family to live in such a place...
It was not until we found the small house where Theresa lived that we were truly amazed.
It was a house similar to the collective housing in China. Theresa's family only had one room, and the corridor outside was filled with a mess of things, including pots and pans, old cabinets and rotten tables. It was so crowded that it was almost impossible to walk through.
David found Theresa's room with mixed feelings and knocked on the door, but no one answered. David was about to knock again when a thin, middle-aged woman with a mean face came out of the house next door: "Who are you looking for? Theresa?" She spoke Portuguese and asked in a very strange tone as she looked at the gift that Fu Chanwei was carrying injured.
"Yes, do you know where Theresa went?" David asked in fluent Portuguese.
Fu Chanwei is also proficient in several languages, including Portuguese. I'm afraid Chunxi was the only one present who was confused and didn't understand anything.
"Who knows? Maybe she was gossiping with Dolores again..." The woman was obviously disdainful when she mentioned Dolores. She might have been disdainful of Theresa as well, but when she saw David and his three companions were all dressed elegantly, she suppressed her disdain and didn't show it.
"Um, do you know where Dolores's house is?" David asked again. Although the woman's attitude was not good, she was still polite.
"Right over there, right next to Theresa's house is Dolores's house." The woman pointed the way while casually pouring the basin of dirty water in her hand, which had been used to wash something, onto the ground, almost splashing Fu Chanwei. David held Chunxi and pulled Fu Chanwei to avoid the sudden dirty water. He shook his head and walked towards the house the woman pointed to.
David knocked on the door, and sure enough, a plump woman came out to open the door: "You are..." Dolores was stunned when she saw David was wearing a suit and tie, which made her look high-end and classy. What was he doing here? It doesn't look like it has anything to do with their family...
"Are you Mrs. Dolores?" David asked politely in Portuguese. Teresa, who was sitting in the house knitting a blanket, was stunned when she heard the voice.
"Yes, what can I do for you?" Dolores didn't see Fu Chanwei holding Chunxi, and thought that this was a lawyer or some other public official who came to their house to inform them of some bad news.
"Oh, I'm here to see Theresa... I'm... Theresa's son David." David finally revealed his identity with difficulty, "I brought my wife and daughter to visit her." As soon as David finished speaking, Theresa in the room could no longer hold back her tears.
It has to be said that Dolores was also shocked. She knew that Theresa had a son, and she was dissatisfied with Theresa because of her cruel abandonment of him. But she really didn't expect that Theresa's son would be so... so... He looked like he was not simple.
She actually had a feeling that Theresa's family was not simple. After all, if someone came from the slums, it would be impossible for them to be as elegant as Theresa and play the piano and harp. But she thought Theresa's family had fallen into poverty.
Dolores quickly invited everyone into the house. Her husband had gone out for a drink. Her eldest daughter Elma worked in a hotel, her eldest son Ugo (some say his name is Hugo, but I think Ugo is a better name) worked in an aluminum factory, her youngest daughter Katya went out to play with her sisters, and her youngest son Chris also went out to play football with his friends. She was supposed to go to work today, but it was her day off, so she stayed at home and knitted a blanket with Theresa and chatted with her.
Theresa was still sitting there with her back to the door, her back a little hunched. David felt a little nervous and slowly walked over to her and called out "Mum..." David still accepted Fu Chanwei's advice and did not call Theresa's name directly.
When Theresa heard the name, she trembled visibly, her back bent even more, and she was shaking slightly. Anyone could tell that she was crying.
David stood there frozen, not knowing what to do, and Fu Chanwei was fascinated. It turned out that such a domineering person could also be childish and at a loss like this. Fu Chanwei walked up and poked David with her elbow, signaling David to take the initiative to step forward and comfort Theresa.
David walked over, stretched out a hand and patted Theresa on the shoulder, without saying a word. Theresa turned around and looked at David with tears in her eyes. Her eyes revealed everything.
Dolores' attention was attracted by Xiao Chunxi, a girl who was as delicate as an angel in a white dress, but with her eyes blindfolded, which made people feel distressed.
"What's wrong with her? Why is her eyes bandaged? Can I hug her?" Dolores looked at Chunxi with a loving expression.
"Of course. She was accidentally hit by other children in kindergarten and her eyes were injured. She just had surgery a few days ago." Fu Chanwei replied.
"Yes, there are some wild children in kindergarten. Oh my little angel, so pitiful." Dolores picked up little Chunxi with a face full of indignation, as if she was also speaking up for Chunxi. Fu Chanwei finally understood why Theresa had a good relationship with Dolores, because Dolores was a warm-hearted auntie from Chaoyang District, who was very familiar and heartwarming.
After the conflict was resolved, the family was of course harmonious and happy. Theresa also liked her daughter-in-law and this lovely granddaughter very much. Dolores was very enthusiastic and planned to invite David and his family to have dinner together. Although the Aveiro family was financially tight and had nothing good to treat the guests, they still hoped to play the role of host.
At times like this, the Chinese people's ability to flatter and sociably entertain was fully demonstrated in Fu Chanwei. Dolores's family situation is not good. If they still want Dolores to entertain them at this time, it will undoubtedly bring them great difficulties. At this time, no matter how enthusiastic others are, they cannot agree and cannot cause any trouble to others.
As we were pushing and refusing, the door opened and a boy holding a football came in. He looked to be in his teens. Although his clothes were dirty, his facial features were delicate and handsome. However, he seemed a little shy when he saw so many people in the house.
"Cris, you're back. Come, meet our guests (meet guests?!)" The boy named Chris seemed a little embarrassed, especially when he saw a little girl who was dressed exquisitely and looked like an angel.
"Cris, it's your turn to take Ivory out to play from now on. You have to be a good brother." Theresa also teased, probably because she was very familiar with Cris's shy personality.
"Is her name Ivory? Sure, I'll take her out to play in the future." Cris answered seriously, thinking: Oh my god, she is so small, so cute, and so delicate...
"What's wrong with her eyes?" Cris turned to Theresa with wide eyes and asked.
"One of their kindergarten kids accidentally hurt her eye so she has to use gauze to wrap it for a while," Theresa replied with a smile.
Although Cris is a little timid and shy, he has a good temper and is very persevering. He likes playing football and will stick to his dream of playing football no matter what.
Chris nodded gently, walked to Chunxi and held out his hand: "Come, I'll take you out to play."
Chunxi didn't understand what Chris was saying, but she understood that Chris was talking to her. Fu Chanwei translated it for Chunxi, and then Chunxi happily stretched out her hand and held Chris's hand back, very accurately.
Chris stretched out his hand and then realized that his hands were dirty after playing football for the whole afternoon. Just as he was about to take it back, Chunxi held his hand. Chunxi looked in the direction of Chris and said, "Big brother, thank you for taking me out to play." She spoke in English, and this time it was Chris' turn to not understand. Theresa smiled and translated it for Chris.
Although there was a language barrier, the two children still got along well with each other.
Chris's hands were warm, just like him. Chris held Chunxi tightly, not letting go for a moment, holding Chunxi's hand as if he was holding the most important thing in his life, not letting go for a moment.
The author has something to say:
The craniotomy surgery is supposed to take a long time to recover, at least half a month, but here I shortened the time for the sake of my plot timeline setting.
