The next day, Shen Wan still didn't get out of bed, and even ate breakfast in bed.
Being bedridden was so unbearable; if she couldn't concentrate on reading, she would have been driven crazy.
Just as she was reading to pass the time, a maidservant stood outside the beaded curtain and said, "Miss, the Fourth Miss has arrived."
Shen Wan put the book away, and Shen Wei walked in. She was wearing a pale yellow dress with large crabapple blossoms embroidered on the hem, and her face was covered with a light veil. She walked with light steps.
She stepped forward, and Shen Wan asked, "Is the injury on your face still not healed?"
Her breathing was somewhat weak, and Shen Wei's eyes reddened slightly as she listened, "Fourth Sister is sick herself, yet she still worries about me."
Shen Wan said, "I'm fine, I just don't have much strength."
How could a normal person be so weak and pale? They had consulted doctors and even the imperial physician, but they still couldn't find the cause of her illness. Shen Wei's worry was written all over her face, and she was anxious inside.
Shen Wan was pretending to be sick, but in order not to give herself away, she said, "Fourth Sister, why don't you go back first, so that I don't pass on my illness to you?"
Shen Wei shook her head. "I'm not afraid."
She turned around, and the maid handed her the brocade box. Shen Wei opened the box, and Shen Wan saw what was inside: a silver fox mask.
Shen Wei said apologetically, "I broke the mask that eldest sister liked the most. No matter how well it was repaired, the damage can still be seen. So Father had someone make an exact copy, which was delivered to the manor this morning. I hope eldest sister won't mind."
Shen Wan chuckled, "That mask is already worth more than its price if it can keep your appearance intact. If you hadn't told me it was new, I wouldn't have been able to tell at all."
Hearing Shen Wan say this, Shen Wei felt relieved.
Shen Wan asked, "Did Fourth Sister go to pay her respects to Grandmother?"
Shen Wei nodded, "I came from my grandmother's. Just now, my second aunt was talking to my grandmother about my eldest sister's illness, worried that she might be possessed by an evil spirit, and wanted to find a Taoist priest to come to the manor to take a look. My grandmother agreed, and I guess the Taoist priest is already on his way to the manor now."
She's really in a hurry. She hasn't been sick for very long, yet she's already rushing to bring the Taoist priest into her mansion. But it's better to get this over with sooner rather than later. If it's delayed a few more days, the Changshan Prince's Mansion might not send her an invitation to their banquet. She's planning to use the Changshan Prince's Mansion banquet to break up her cousin's marriage with Scholar Zhao.
Shen Wan said, "Since my second aunt cares about me so much, I must go and see for myself."
Shen Wan threw off the covers to get out of bed, but Shen Wei said, "Eldest sister is weak, she should stay in bed and rest, don't go."
She didn't necessarily have to go; she just didn't want to stay in bed any longer.
Shen Wan was determined to do something that Shen Wei could not stop. Yin Shuang helped her wash up, then sat down to do her makeup. She applied some rouge to her face, making her look much more refreshed.
Unable to dissuade Shen Wan, Shen Wei simply went with her, as she herself had originally intended to go and take a look as well.
Because of the time spent getting ready, and because she was "weak" and walked slowly, by the time Shen Wan and the others arrived at Qinghui Courtyard, the Taoist priest had already arrived and the table was set up.
The Taoist priest looked like a hermit, and seemed very capable.
The old lady was also in the courtyard, with the second and third wives by her side, the fourth wife also there, as well as Shen Ying and Shen Rong, not to mention the maids and servants.
With Shen Wei's help, Shen Wan walked over. Hearing familiar footsteps behind her, she turned around and saw her father and older brother walking over.
Shen Wan hadn't expected Shen Jing to come. Her father never believed in such things, but for the sake of his daughter, he was willing to believe she was pregnant. Shen Wan's nose tingled with tears.
Shen Jing was also surprised to see Shen Wan return. He asked, "Why are you here too?"
Shen Wan said, "My daughter rarely gets sick, but this time she fell ill for no reason. My second aunt and grandmother invited a Taoist priest into the mansion, and my daughter also wants to know if she is possessed by an evil spirit."
Since Shen Wanren had arrived, Shen Jing didn't let her go back, but instead looked at the Taoist priest.
The Taoist priest had already laid out everything needed for the birth chart analysis and said, "Give me the birth dates and times of the two people."
The second wife then had her maid hand over the birth dates of Shen Wan and Xie Jingyan, which she had prepared beforehand, to the Taoist priest.
The Taoist priest glanced at the birth charts and said, "Both of these two people have birth charts that are exceptionally auspicious."
One who was born a prince.
She was born into a noble family, her father was a great general, and her mother was wealthy. She was betrothed to a prince at the age of one month.
It's incredibly expensive.
The second wife said, "Although they are of noble status, it doesn't necessarily mean they are suitable. Please ask the Taoist priest to do a proper calculation."
The Taoist priest chuckled, “That’s true.”
He looked at the birth dates of the two people, calculated for a while, and then cast a divination.
Everyone watched with bated breath. After a long while, the Taoist priest finished his calculations, and the old lady couldn't wait to ask, "How was it?"
The Taoist priest said, "These two birth dates are a match made in heaven, a perfect pair destined for each other. They are sure to be a loving couple who will grow old together."
The maids and servants all looked at Shen Wan, and even though she was mentally prepared, she still couldn't help but blush.
That's a bit too much to be envied and resented. Couldn't you have been a little more tactful and restrained?
The old lady's anxious expression froze, and the second wife's brows furrowed into a knot as she looked at the head housekeeper behind her. The head housekeeper shook her head repeatedly. That wasn't how she had instructed the Taoist priest. The Taoist priest had taken the money, so why wasn't he doing as she had told him to?
The third wife glanced at the second wife before saying, "My eldest daughter has been engaged for only a few days, but she has fallen ill. The doctor can't find the cause of her illness, and we are worried that it might be due to incompatible birth charts..."
The Taoist priest smiled and said, "These two birth charts have a mutually supportive relationship and could never clash. You're overthinking it. As for your illness, judging from the divination, it seems you've ingested something unhealthy. Just be careful with your diet, and you'll be fine in a few days. But—"
