Chapter 397 Letting Go



The Empress Dowager was the eldest prince's biggest asset in his quest for the throne. Her words successfully calmed him down, and he was no longer so uneasy.

After the eldest prince left, the Empress Dowager raised her hand to rub her temples.

The Emperor was flipping through memorials when he heard this. He paused, glanced at Eunuch Yuan, and said, "Should I bestow you upon Prince Ling?"

Eunuch Yuan knelt down and said, "Your Majesty, please don't frighten this servant. I have served you for half my life. You can take this servant's life, but you can't send this servant away."

The Emperor asked, "Why was the imperial edict sent to Prince Ling?"

Eunuch Yuan wiped the sweat from his brow and said, "This servant couldn't persuade Grand Secretary Han to accept the imperial decree. I was afraid that Prince Ling would misunderstand that Your Majesty was just being perfunctory, so I handed the decree to him. If he can't persuade Grand Secretary Han, then he can't blame Your Majesty and this servant..."

The emperor said with a forced smile, "You certainly know how to handle things thoroughly."

"No, I dare not accept the Emperor's praise..."

Eunuch Yuan's voice was so low it was almost inaudible.
