The Emperor was flipping through memorials when he heard this. He paused, glanced at Eunuch Yuan, and said, "Should I bestow you upon Prince Ling?"
Eunuch Yuan knelt down and said, "Your Majesty, please don't frighten this servant. I have served you for half my life. You can take this servant's life, but you can't send this servant away."
The Emperor asked, "Why was the imperial edict sent to Prince Ling?"
Eunuch Yuan wiped the sweat from his brow and said, "This servant couldn't persuade Grand Secretary Han to accept the imperial decree. I was afraid that Prince Ling would misunderstand that Your Majesty was just being perfunctory, so I handed the decree to him.
