Chapter 7 of Ming Niang Yang
A graceful figure, wearing a crimson wedding gown and a crimson veil, emerged from the white mist. In front of her, the Gao family's daughter-in-law, dressed in gray, was desperately fleeing. The mist was thick, and the dark sky was devoid of other colors.
Yan Ran and Jie Qianchou ran over, feeling their hair standing on end, and were at a loss for a moment.
Jie Qianchou took a deep breath and shouted forward, "Hey! Don't move! Just try and see if you dare!"
When Gao's wife heard the shouts, she felt like she saw a savior and rushed towards Jie Qianchou and the other man like crazy.
"Save me, please save me!"
The woman in the red wedding dress just turned her body stiffly in the direction where Gao's wife was running away, and then walked over leisurely.
Yan Ran moved behind Jie Qianchou and said, "Are you sick? Why did you provoke her? What if she comes here now?"
Jie Qianchou was also a little dumbfounded. Logically speaking, if this skeleton bride was a human in disguise, she should have run away when she saw someone coming. How did she actually come here?
"Help, there are ghosts, there are so many ghosts!"
Before Xie Qianchou could figure out what to do, Gao's wife rushed over and hugged him. Tears streamed down her face, and her saliva couldn't stop flowing. Seeing her terrified expression, Xie Qianchou couldn't tell whether he felt fear or sympathy. He put on a fierce expression, pointing at the red wedding dress and cursing.
"I'm giving you face, right? If you follow me again, I'll tear your head off!"
Jie Qianchou cursed as he stood in front of Gao's wife and Yan Ran. Gao's wife was completely frightened at this moment, and she kept muttering something and started talking nonsense.
The woman in the red wedding dress stopped walking, and a sharp laugh came from under the red veil: "Do you want my head?"
Without waiting for Jie Qianchou's reaction, Dahong Wedding Dress took half a step forward: "Then, I'll give it to you."
The night wind howled, and the red veil was lifted into the air, revealing a rotten skull. The woman in the red wedding dress took another half step forward, and the head suddenly fell from her body, but was caught steadily by her hands on her chest.
The rotten head held in a pair of white and tender hands slowly opened its mouth, its sharp white teeth opening and closing, with no trace of flesh around it.
"Here, take it."
Seeing this scene, Jie Qianchou narrowed his eyes slightly, and his clenched fists made a crisp sound. Yan Ran knew that this was a physical change caused by Jie Qianchou being too nervous, so she held his arm tightly.
The sinister head turned to Gao's wife: "As for you, you can't escape."
Gao's wife had been foaming at the mouth for some time, and suddenly her whole body convulsed violently and she fell to the ground.
Yan Ran had worked in a hospital before, and she could tell that Gao's wife was suffering from sudden death: "Call quickly, she needs emergency treatment."
The red veil had fallen onto the rotten skull again. The woman in the red wedding dress stiffly raised her hands and placed the skull back on her neck.
The Gao family's daughter-in-law fell to the ground, her life or death unknown, her hands still tightly grasping Jie Qianchou's thighs. When Jie Qianchou looked up again in a trance, the bright red wedding dress had disappeared into the mist, leaving no trace.
By this time, several brave villagers had rushed over and formed a small circle around Gao's wife. Yan Ran, who was in the circle, checked her breath and shook his head. In the end, he couldn't save her.
Police lights flashed and several police motorcycles were parked on the side of the road.
Yan Ran and the other person were the first to appear at the crime scene. Gao's wife died next to Li Qianchou's thigh, so they naturally received special attention from the police.
Bu Kui was in a bad mood. No one would feel comfortable after an hour of bumpy driving on a mountain road in the middle of the night. He tried his best to control his irritation and asked Yan Ran.
"Name, occupation."
Yan Ran looked at Bu Kui's still slightly trembling legs, and recalled the scene when he just got off the tricycle. In an instant, his empathy turned into a sense of intimacy.
"You don't recognize me. I'm Yan Ran."
The day Zhu Li was murdered was the day Bu Kui visited Yan Ran. She had a deep impression of the officer: a muscular man with a shallow scar on his neck. He looked fierce, but he was actually quite talkative. She felt he was a nice guy.
"Don't try to get close to me. Just answer whatever I ask you."
Bu Kui's cold answer halved his favorability in Yan Ran's heart.
"Yan Ran, psychological counselor, the relevant documents are here."
The last time he interrogated her, Yan Ran handed all the necessary documents to Bu Kui with ease. Bu Kui flipped through the documents and his gaze fell on Jie Qianchou.
"What do you do?"
Jie Qianchou's expression was calm, without a trace of emotion. Yan Ran, standing beside him, was sweating for him. Wouldn't this liar be taken away directly by the police?
"I am a Taoist priest."
"What?"
Jie Qianchou produced two documents and handed them to Bu Kui. One was his ID card, the other his certificate of ordination. It was the first time Bu Kui had seen such a document. He flipped open the cover and saw his name, Taoist name, and sect, among other details, written on it. A large red stamp also adorned the document. Yan Ran also craned his neck to read it. Although he couldn't understand it, he was deeply impressed.
"Yunwu Mountain, Piaomiao Temple, and the Taoist Priest Qiansou."
Jie Qianchou introduced himself at the right moment. He stood straight with a calm gaze, looking quite otherworldly. Yan Ran gave him a big thumbs up in his heart. This wave really made you pretend.
Bu Kui took a few photos of the certificate and prepared to go back to the office to check it. He handed the certificate back to Jie Qianchou.
"I can't tell you're a professional... a great immortal."
Yan Ran couldn't hold back his excitement when the word "Great Immortal" came out. Jie Qianchou's mouth twitched as well.
"I'm not an immortal, I'm just a Taoist priest."
"Same thing. So tell me what happened just now."
Jie Qianchou explained everything in detail, and Yan Ran supplemented it. They then followed the police to identify the scene, corroborating their statements with other witnesses. In the blink of an eye, darkness faded and dawn arrived, and the investigation finally concluded.
Yan Ran found Bu Kui and handed him a glass of water.
"Officer, have you found the murderer?"
Bu Kui drank it all in one gulp and said thank you.
"We've checked all the nearby residents, but there are no clues. If you find anything new, please let me know."
Bu Kui left his phone number to Yan Ran, and Jie Qianchou came over.
"Officer, have you found out the cause of Zhu Li's death?"
"It appears to be sudden death at this point. The biochemical reports haven't come out yet."
"Why is Zhu Li's face so severely dehydrated?"
"Judging from the particles left on the face..."
Bu Kui said halfway and then thought something was wrong. How could you know these things?
"Hey, Master, the case hasn't been solved yet. Can I tell you these things?"
Jie Qianchou had a dark face, and Bu Kui continued to joke with him.
"Isn't the immortal able to tell fortunes? Why don't you try to calculate it?"
"Calcium oxide."
"Haha, you're quite good at making things up... huh? How did you know that?!"
Bu Kui had originally wanted to laugh at this guy, but he didn't expect that he would be right. Bu Kui immediately looked at Jie Qianchou with a scrutinizing eye. Could this guy be the murderer?
"It's calculated."
Jie Qianchou's face remained calm, and he looked as if it was a matter of course.
"You liar, you're here!"
Zhu Shun, who was only wearing a pair of shorts, rushed over cursing when he saw Jie Qianchou.
Bu Kui's eyes lit up as he looked at Zhu Shun. He had questioned every town resident that night. They all seemed to have alibis. Only Zhu Shun, who hadn't been seen all night, showed up now, which was very suspicious.
"Stop. Where were you last night?"
Yesterday, Zhu Shun was tricked by Jie Qianchou into believing he was in great financial luck, so he went to the next village to gamble. He ended up losing miserably, leaving him with nothing but a pair of underwear. He was even beaten up for owing money. As soon as Zhu Shun returned, he went all over the place looking for Jie Qianchou.
"I'm going... where I go is none of your business, eh?"
Zhu Shun almost told the police that he had gambled last night, but luckily he was smart.
"You're quite aggressive! Come with me and see if I can control you."
Bu Kui was happy, and the suspect came to him on his own initiative.
Zhu Shun had no idea that someone had died last night. He thought that Jie Qianchou had exposed his gambling scandal. Zhu Shun turned and ran, but several police officers suddenly appeared from all directions and pinned him down.
Zhu Shun felt so bitter. It was just a gamble, but why did so many police officers come to arrest him? Or had his deeds been discovered? Zhu Shun's forehead was instantly covered with cold sweat.
Yan Ran watched the burly Zhu Shun being taken away by the police and pulled at the corner of Jie Qianchou's clothes.
"No matter how you look at it, he can't be the Bone Bride."
Jie Qianchou folded his arms and shook his head.
“Sometimes the less likely something is, the more likely it is.”
"So, you really became a Taoist priest?"
"No?"
Yan Ran suddenly showed a look of envy.
"Are you still hiring at your Taoist temple? I heard that monks and Taoist priests earn very high salaries. Is that true?"
"You're overthinking it."
"Where is your Piaomiao Temple? Isn't it in Wulin City?"
"Isn't it on the mountain north of the city?"
"There's a Cloudy Mountain in the north of the city? You're not talking about the dilapidated temple on Dog Head Mountain, are you?"
The two were still chatting when a group of villagers surrounded them. The old man in the lead, Gao, had red eyes and grabbed Jie Qianchou's wrist tightly!
"You deceived me so badly!"
