"Sister, I said Zhihua is a good kid!"
Ma Mingqiang showed off happily.
Ma Xiu Lan looked at most of the potatoes and two pieces of meat left in the basin, and scared her brother with a few nice words. Didn’t she see what he was doing?
"Of course I have no problem teaching you, but I want to know more about your family situation first. I heard that people in the countryside get married early, and many get married at 17 or 18."
Bai Zhihua was not happy to hear Ma Xiulan's question at the dinner table, as it disturbed him while he was eating meat. But he still raised his head:
“There are six children in my family, and I am the second oldest. I have an older brother, three younger sisters, and a younger brother.
My family was poor and I had no money to find a wife for myself, so I asked the village to issue me a letter of introduction and came to the city to find odd jobs. I happened to meet Uncle Ma and Xiaolian, and I was willing to marry them.
After Bai Zhihua finished speaking, he saw Ma Xiulan taking advantage of his conversation to give the two remaining pieces of meat in the bowl to Ma Mingqiang and Ma Xiaolian.
Ma Xiulan continued to ask, "Are your elder brother and younger brother married now? Is your younger sister married?"
Bai Zhihua felt that Ma Xiu Lan was just trying to divert his attention so that she could take the meat away. She was so stingy. He was a grown man and had given himself to their family. What was wrong with eating some of their meat? They owed him money.
"My eldest brother and my youngest brother are married, and my sisters are all married too."
Ma Xiulan shook her head, expressing doubt:
"That shouldn't be the case. Why are you the only one who hasn't gotten married? In the village, as long as you work hard, you can basically make a living. It's not like you have six boys in your family."
Bai Zhihua lowered his head and pretended to be pitiful: "I am the second child, and my parents don't like me. In addition, my parents are in poor health, so I have never gotten married."
Ma Mingqiang saw Bai Zhihua's pitiful look and looked at Ma Xiulan: "It's normal for parents to have preferences when they have many children."
He and Ma Xiu Lan had suffered enough from having a stepmother, so he not only believed what Bai Zhihua said, but also felt very distressed.
Ma Xiu Lan knew that her brother could not immediately change his impression of Bai Zhihua with just a few words.
So he said to Bai Zhihua, who looked honest, "Then ask your village to issue a certificate stating that you have never been married."
