Chapter 75 When will Fu Yungui return?
Momo woke up early the next morning. Because she hadn't slept all night on the plane, she had slept quite soundly. After changing her clothes, she hesitated for a long time in the room before opening the door and then leaning halfway out to look to her right.
She didn't know if Fu Yungui had come back last night, or if he was still at home now.
The entire second floor was quiet, and she quietly went down the elevator next to it.
Downstairs was quiet as well. Warm sunlight streamed in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Momo noticed several empty wine bottles on the living room table and many cigarette butts in the ashtray.
Fu Yungui must have come back last night. Judging from all these cigarette butts, he probably wasn't in a good mood last night.
But right now, they're probably still sleeping.
With that thought in mind, Momo rolled up her sleeves and tidied up the things on the table, then glanced at the contents of the refrigerator.
The green curry chicken was still there; Fu Yungui must have seen it when he got the wine last night, but he didn't touch it.
She took the box out, intending to heat it up before eating it, otherwise it would be a waste.
A moment later, just as she placed the bowl on the table and sat down, her phone, which was on the sofa, rang. The sound was unusually loud in the empty living room. Startled, she jumped up, picked it up, and saw that it was a familiar number from the police station.
Her heart tightened, she glanced at the second floor, and then ran to the back garden to receive it.
"Hello Ms. Huang, why can't I get through to you on the phone?" A young man's voice came from the other end of the line.
He started calling her yesterday, but the line kept going unanswered or out of service. It wasn't until today, on a whim, that he finally got through.
Momo was taken aback by his words. She hadn't received any caller ID yesterday, which she guessed was related to something Fu Yungui had put in her phone.
"I'm sorry, I'm currently abroad and the signal is bad," she said truthfully.
Then he asked again, "What's wrong, officer? Is there any news?"
“After you came that day, we checked the surveillance footage near Linxin Road, but the footage there was intact for every period of time, except for the time period you mentioned.”
Momo remained silent, showing no surprise at what the police officer had said.
"Also, were you in a car accident a few days ago?" the young policeman asked again.
Momo responded, still speaking the truth, "Yes."
“I also checked the surveillance footage of that section of road that day, and it turned out that all the cameras on that section of road were broken. So, combined with what you said that day, I still find it very strange. It must be that someone deliberately sabotaged it.”
Momo calmed herself down, knowing that they wouldn't be able to find any evidence no matter what. "Thank you. The car accident that day was my own fault for driving carelessly and I crashed into the side. It had nothing to do with him."
The young policeman was taken aback by her words and fell silent.
But then I thought, maybe she was afraid of something, which is why she reacted that way.
“Don’t be afraid, Ms. Huang. Everything leaves behind subtle evidence. As long as it’s left, we have a chance to find it.”
Momo felt warmed by the comforting words on the other end, but she knew in her heart that the chances were too slim.
"Really, it's not necessary. I might have misunderstood. He hasn't bothered me again," she explained gently to the person opposite her.
Upon hearing this, the young policeman said nothing more.
In such cases, the authorities don't investigate unless the public files a complaint. Since the parties involved are willing to give up pursuing the matter, they can only let it end like this, especially since no one was injured or killed.
"Okay." The person on the other end of the phone sighed softly.
"No matter what, thank you all for making this trip." Momo said, her nose tingling with emotion; concern from strangers makes it easier to break down one's defenses.
"You're too kind. It's what we should do. As long as you're alright," the person on the other end replied politely.
"By the way, you can come and pick up your ring when you have time. It's quite valuable, and it's not safe for it to stay with us."
Momo paused for a moment before remembering that Fu Yungui's ring was still at the police station. "I won't be able to go back for a while, could you please send it to me?"
The person on the other end of the phone paused for a moment, then said, "Okay, send me your address and I'll send it to you in a bit."
"Okay, thank you then." Momo remained polite.
"No need." The phone was hung up as soon as the words were spoken.
Momo stared at her phone for a while before turning back into her room. After she finished eating and tidying up, it was almost ten o'clock, and there was still no sound from upstairs.
Around noon, someone brought her lunch again, but it was only for her. She asked and found out that Fu Yungui wasn't upstairs.
For almost a week, Momo stayed alone in the big house and never saw Fu Yungui come back. She didn't know where he had gone.
During the day, it was fine, nothing much except being bored, but at night, she would always go back to her room early and lock the door properly.
She was quite scared, being all alone in this empty house.
On Sunday afternoon, the ring was delivered by courier. Momo went to the door to sign for it, and after the courier left, she thought she would open the door and go for a walk before coming back.
As soon as the door opened, she hadn't taken more than a few steps when her phone rang.
"Miss Huang, please come back." The voice on the other end of the phone was devoid of any emotion; Momo recognized it as Anu's voice.
“Okay,” Momo replied, guessing that there might be surveillance cameras watching her here, so she turned around and walked back.
After she finished speaking, Anu was about to hang up when the other end spoke again before he could, in a soft, low voice, "Anu, that him... no, when are you guys coming back?"
She actually wanted to ask Fu Yungui when he came back, but she was too embarrassed to ask directly.
She wanted to wait for him to come back and discuss with him whether she could have a chance to go out, or go to find Qi Qi next door. In short, she didn't want to stay in the house all the time.
Anu paused, glancing at the man beside her. Fu Yungui was staring at the person on the screen and had heard everything she said, but he remained silent.
"What's wrong tonight?" Anu asked. They had come to Myanmar to handle some business and were preparing to return home soon.
"N-nothing...it's nothing." Momo paused. "By the way, could you have someone send me some groceries?"
"What's wrong? Didn't someone bring you food?" Anu asked, puzzled.
"Yes, but I'd like to make it myself... but if it's too much trouble, then forget it."
Anu glanced at the man beside him, and seeing that he didn't object, probably tacitly agreeing, he said, "Okay, I'll have someone contact you."
"Thank you." Momo hung up the phone.
