Chapter 64: One Fart, Eight Lies
Sun walked out quickly and saw a carriage parked at the gate. The coachman was looking into the yard.
She walked closer and asked, "Master, who are you looking for? Why are you yelling at my door?"
The driver looked up at Sun and said, "Sister, I'm looking for the guy who hired me for the carriage. He told me to wait for him at the village entrance. He said he would go back to town soon. I wanted to ask him if he was going to leave. If not, please give me the fare as soon as possible."
Although Sun was certain that the person in the carriage was Chen Zhancai, she still asked cautiously, "Master, our family is extremely poor and cannot afford to hire a carriage. Did you find the wrong person?"
The driver frowned. "I wouldn't be mistaken. The boy got off the car and entered the village. Someone saw him and said he was the only educated person in the village. Otherwise, I really wouldn't have been able to find your house."
Sun was so happy that she raised her voice immediately, fearing that the people in the room couldn't hear her.
"I say, you don't understand me, don't you? Go ask whoever hired your carriage for money. Don't block my door and yell. No one in my family hired your carriage."
The driver got angry when he heard this. "I thought that guy wasn't a good person. He didn't even dare to enter the village and insisted on getting off at the village entrance. I didn't expect he was really going to default on his debt. Let me tell you, if you don't give me the fare today, I will block your door and won't leave."
The coachman was also stubborn. He pulled the reins and parked the carriage across the gate.
"If you don't want to leave, just stay here. Anyway, our Chen family didn't hire your carriage."
This is exactly the effect that Sun wanted. Chen Zhancai is a bastard who dares to do things but not to take responsibility. He is such a coward. Today we have to see how he can cover up this lie.
The people in the house heard the quarrel and came out one after another.
When Old Lady Chen saw that her door was blocked by a carriage, she was furious and glared at him.
"You, the coachman, have no sense of law? We haven't offended you, so why are you blocking my gate? Get out of here, or I'll go find the headman and have him seize your carriage."
The driver crossed his arms and looked nonchalant.
"Okay, go quickly. It's best to call everyone in your village over so I can let them know how your family is refusing to pay their debts."
Old Man Chen's face was filled with anger, his hands shaking uncontrollably. "You're such a bully! When did our family owe you money? Do you think we farmers are easy to bully? You're just extorting money right here. I'm telling you, a desperate dog will jump over the wall. Be careful, my son will beat you to your knees and beg for mercy. Get out of here now!"
"I've seen a lot of people like you who refuse to pay their debts. Am I afraid of your threats? Don't you want to hit someone? Come on, hit me here." The driver stiffened his neck and pointed at his head.
Sun signaled to her husband with her eyes not to talk to him. Chen Zhanliang knew what his wife meant, and both of them had a look of gloating and watching the show.
Old man Chen pounded his head with both hands. "I'm so angry! Do you think my Chen family is a pushover that anyone can bully? I'm going to risk my life today to establish my authority in Nanshan Village. Otherwise, everyone will want to shit on me."
Old man Chen looked around for a handy tool, picked up a shovel not far away and rushed towards the driver.
Chen Zhancai was sweating profusely in the room, his heart was in a panic, and his face was filled with regret. How could he have made such a low-level mistake? He should have paid the driver first, and this annoying thing would not have happened.
That driver is so stupid. You're still afraid that he will default on his debt. Is he the kind of person who cares about trivial matters?
Just as he was pulling his hair and hitting his head, he saw Old Man Chen pick up a shovel, and he was so scared that his face turned pale.
But you can't just hide in the house and pretend to be a grandson. If you make a big deal out of it, no one will listen to you no matter where you talk.
Thinking of this, Chen Zhancai ran out like a fire burning his butt and hugged Old Man Chen, "Dad, calm down first, don't do anything!"
"Zhancai, let go. We can't let outsiders bully us!"
"Dad, calm down and let me talk to him." Chen Zhancai snatched the shovel and threw it aside.
When the driver saw Chen Zhancai, he was immediately furious. "Finally you came out, you little bastard! I thought you were going to be a coward! Hurry up and give me the money. I don't have time to argue with you. If you dare to cheat, I will sue you."
"Hey, big brother, why are you so angry? Can't you just talk nicely?" Chen Zhancai trotted over to the driver and said in a low voice, "Master, hurry up and wait for me at the village entrance."
"Don't talk nonsense, give me the money quickly." The driver stretched out his hand.
Chen Zhancai was so anxious that he rubbed his hands and said nice things repeatedly, "Master, I won't owe you any money for the ride. Please wait for me at the village entrance first, and I will give you double the fare."
Sun had sharp ears and heard everything Chen Zhancai said clearly. She tilted her mouth and showed a sarcastic smile.
"Hey, I didn't realize you're quite rich, Chen Zhancai. I'll double the fare."
Sun's gentle words were like thunder exploding in everyone's heart.
Chen Zhanliang was instantly furious. "Third brother, what on earth are you thinking? The family has become like this, and you are so generous."
Sun sneered and looked at Chen Zhancai, "Didn't you just say that you walked back from the town? Why did you lie to us?"
"It's not second sister-in-law, I, I, I..." Chen Zhancai didn't know how to explain for a moment.
Chen Zhanliang gritted his teeth and glared at Chen Zhancai, "Third brother, you've disappointed our parents so much. You're full of lies and shit, and not a single word of truth. Do you think everyone in your family is stupid? Do you find it fun to lie like this? Now I seriously doubt your actions."
"Shut up!" Chen Zhancai was exposed and felt ashamed. His eyes widened with anger. To save face, he pretended to be wronged and shouted, "I'm telling you, you can scold me and slander me, but you can't doubt my character. I, Chen Zhancai, dare to swear to heaven that if I say even one word to deceive my parents, I will never pass the imperial examination."
Upon hearing this, Old Lady Chen jumped up in panic, "Old Third, what nonsense are you talking about? I didn't say I don't believe you, so spit on you now."
Chen Zhanliang looked aggrieved. "Mother, I don't want to swear an oath either, but my second brother has said such awful things about me that I'm almost a nobody. If this gets out, it will mean my character is corrupted. How can I still have the face to call myself a scholar?"
"Good son, don't worry, I'll vent your anger for you." Old Mrs. Chen frowned and glared at Chen Zhanliang with gritted teeth, "Second son, how can you be such a brother? If you keep talking nonsense and accusing the third son, and he passes the imperial examination and brings honor to the family, I will not care about you. Just wait and see how your two sons will get married in the future."
